Located at 2300 Delaware Avenue, the 18-acre Westside Research Park (WRP) comprises two primary buildings totaling 105,000 assignable square feet. This multi-disciplinary research facility houses faculty, staff, and graduate students from the Baskin Engineering Electrical & Computer Engineering Department, the Genomics Institute, the Physical & Biological Sciences Materials Sciences Program, and the Arts Center for Force Majeure.

JOB SUMMARY

The WRP Facilities Assistant is one of a three-person team dedicated to the Westside Research Park (WRP) and a member of the Baskin School of Engineering (BSOE) Facilities group reporting to the Director of Facilities. Under the general supervision of the WRP Facility Manager, the incumbent provides building operational support and is responsible for front-line support, including discovering, assessing, investigating, and resolving building plant issues.

The WRP Facilities Assistant interfaces and collaborates with facilities personnel from Physical Planning, Development, and Operations, and academic divisions with occupants in the WRP, including Physical and Biological Sciences, the Baskin School of Engineering, and the Arts Division. The incumbent also assists with special events, augments general facilities services needed, and travels to the main UCSC campus as necessary.

APPOINTMENT INFORMATION

Budgeted Salary: $36.11 - $38.33/hour. Salary commensurate with skills, qualifications and experience.

JOB DUTIES

80% - Facility Support
  • Provides first-level support to trouble tickets and initial reports of building maintenance issues, taking trouble calls, inputting work requests into the BSOE work order system (RT), providing initial investigation of the problem, solving, and forwarding to the Physical Plant work order desk with information for resolution as required.
  • Interfaces with Physical Plant technicians and contractors to provide guidance and escort if necessary.
  • Closes off areas for safety or to prevent further issues as necessary.
  • Supports minor maintenance tasks not covered by regular custodial staff.
  • Facilitates equipment deliveries and moves, including moving heavy equipment such as refrigerators, freezers, and optics tables.
  • Maintains the functionality and appearance of furniture as needed.
  • Assists with building-related issues stemming from minor laboratory modifications and renovations, raising repair requests to appropriate vendors, other campus units, or other responsible parties.
  • Monitors and reviews stock of building supplies, including paper towels, cleaning agents, secondary containers, hazwaste and medical waste bags, sharps containers, and other supplies, and advises of necessary purchases.
  • Maintains organized facilities office and facilities shop spaces.
  • Responds to normal hours lockout calls and assists with entry and access.
  • Serves as Backup Building Coordinator for emergency/disaster preparedness at assigned venues, providing backup communication liaison between service agencies and building occupants, assisting in the preparation of building response plans, and coordinating education of building occupants.
  • Provides secondary backup for the Building Access Administrator.
  • Issues physical keys and card /code access per established procedures.
  • Assists WRP Facility Manager with backup coverage for after-hours support, which may require overtime, a modified schedule, on-call status, or callback.

10% - Safety and Hazardous Materials, Hazardous Waste Monitoring and Review Documentation
  • Conducts regular and periodic inspection rounds for safety, hazmat, hazwaste, and medical/biological waste compliance.
  • Inspects areas for security, fire, and accident prevention hazards and advises appropriate campus units or occupants to take corrective action.
  • Takes immediate and appropriate action as required to ensure personnel and property safety and coordinates long-term/permanent corrective actions to be performed by appropriate campus units.
  • Monitors biological/medical waste storage area to ensure compliance with rules and regulations, including documentation of waste pickups, weekly inspections conducted, and service received by outside vendors or campus units.
  • Attends and maintains safety training.
  • Adheres to work protocols and safety requirements.
  • Ensures personal protection equipment for self and student workers is adequate, worn, and used.
  • Follows and recommends best practices for safe use of equipment and ladders.
  • Ensures protocols for entering hazardous and biosafety labs are followed by self and student staff.

10% - Event Support and Other Duties
  • Provides logistics and space preparation support for WRP special events, providing occasional weekend and evening support as necessary.

Position Overview: The Executive Editor, working with the Managing Editor as the newsroom leadership team, will shape the next generation of multiple news and information products offered by Lookout Santa Cruz and Lookout more widely, applying and growing the Lookout Local journalism model, making sure we meet both our mission and business performance needs.
At Lookout Local, we’ve figured out a bunch of things well – real and early-on community engagement, multi-stream revenue, local advertising and bedrock breaking news-to-accountability through the day local journalism. And we appreciate the national recognition of our work from our Pulitzer to our fast-ramp launch and model-building in Oregon. But that’s just a beginning in Santa Cruz and in Eugene-Springfield, and as we plot next communities to serve.
For this position, we’re seeking a spirited, top editor/news product innovator ready to work with great colleagues to take Lookout Santa Cruz specifically and Lookouts overall to next levels of journalism, community service and revenue generation. We understand the fast-evolving connections in that holy trinity, and believe that harnessing the latest tech/thinking (including mastering local AI application, on which we’ve laid a great foundation already) is fundamental to our future. At this point, we focus on three key types of products: site, app and newsletter, and this leader, working with both our senior team and newsroom will build on those — and what’s to come.
At our two Lookouts, now approaching 40 strong people in number, we pride ourselves on being both fiercely mission-driven and fiercely business-driven, and know that only those local news organizations (like our friends and cohorts in the Knight Growth Challenge Fund, with Texas Tribune now the eighth member after we joined as the seventh) will prosper in the now-faster changing ways all of us find and consume news. We’re ready for the task, and seek a collaborative, accomplished audience- and product-focused colleague to join us in this adventure.
Ideally, we’d like the candidate to be located and (relocatable) to the Bay Area, if not Santa Cruz itself, able to join us in person at least a couple of days a week. The ideal candidate possesses a good understanding of the differentiation of Lookout ‘s model and a passion for building atop it, with the well-demonstrated experience to be successful at a high national quality level. We’re asking a lot – both a history of newsroom leadership excellence and a proven product orientation that matches with the tech of our times.
This position encompasses four main initiatives:
1) Building on the successful, Pulitzer Prize-winning Lookout Santa Cruz start of four years. Builds on Lookout’s already impactful new product creations – including Neighborhood Newsletters, Briefs, Story Maps, Events integrations and more – proactively assesses, innovates and tests new ways of creating news and information that will serve and delight audiences. Builds upon the Lookout Playbook, applying both audience strategy and judgment that maximizes the best use of now-emerging technologies. Working with the managing editor, focuses on the next phase of our coverage plans, as we increase staffing, leading to the updating of a 2025-2026 community news and information plan. In this strategic content and product analysis, and product development, works as a member of Lookout’s overall senior leadership team as well as with its product and revenue teams as well.
2) Leading, along with colleagues, Lookout’s expansion efforts to other cities. Patterned on Lookout’s highly successful fundraising, planning, hiring and deployment for Lookout Eugene-Springfield, strategizes next markets.
3) Serving as a prominent public face, with publisher-like interaction, in the wider Santa Cruz County community and nationally. Become a familiar face in civic and business circles, a company presence that augments what our correspondents, ad salespeople and community engagement people do. Include creating useful community partnerships, talks to civic groups, moderation of events, 1:1 lunches with elected, business and non-profit leaders. Works with the managing editor and community and student engagement manager on a scheduled, steady, and strategic, stream of Lookout Listens and issue-oriented forums. Nationally, becomes another key spokesperson for Lookout’s success and expansion strategy.
4) Leads, with managing editor, next plans for development and training in the newsroom, creating a development program for journalists, individually, and collectively, setting up a steady cadence of learning/training programs. The executive editor role requires a demonstrated, collegial leader, with substantial newsroom management, well-tested digital and audience experience, and one who excels in building further on both a set of products and a culture of excellence and collaboration. Working with the managing editor, who will direct the newsroom day to day, the ideal candidate both values Lookout’s early success and offers a vision of its next steps, steps that are both mission- and business-building. Our efforts began in 1962 when a visionary group of parents and educators in Santa Barbara created the Scholarship Foundation of Santa Barbara (SFSB) to eliminate disparities between who can and cannot access postsecondary education. About Our Organization

Santa Clara Valley Healthcare (SCVH) is the second-largest County-owned health and hospital system in California and is committed to improving the health of the 1.9 million people of Santa Clara County. About the Department

The Pathology and Laboratory Department is a twelve-member group that serves four hospitals in Santa Clara County: O'Connor Hospital in San Jose, CA; Regional Medical Center, in San Jose, CA; Saint Louise Regional Hospital in Gilroy, CA; and Santa Clara Valley Medical Center in San Jose, CA.


The Laboratory within Santa Clara Valley Healthcare is a full-service Clinical and Anatomic Pathology Laboratory comprised of the sections of Chemistry, Special Chemistry, Toxicology, Hematology, Coagulation, Transfusion Service, Microbiology, Virology, Mycobacteriology, Immunology, Parasitology, Mycology, Processing and Accessioning, Histology, Cytology, Laboratory Information Services, and Support Services. The Laboratory receives, processes, and tests approximately 2500-3000 specimens per day in a highly automated facility. The high volume, multi-disciplinary workload provides rich and varied experiences in laboratory medicine.


The Laboratory serves Santa Clara Valley Healthcare, our outpatient clinics, the inmate population at the jails and correctional institutions, and provides specialized reference laboratory services to other community hospitals.


About the Position

The Chair of Pathology and Laboratory requires an active California Medical license, and the candidates must be Board Certified in both Anatomic and Clinical Pathology with a minimum of 3 years of progressive medical leadership experience. Experience at a large hospital or health system with Level I or II trauma center is highly desirable.


The Chair will oversee departmental strategic direction, clinical operations, quality improvement, faculty development, and the integration of all pathology and laboratory services within the health system. The Chair is responsible for the leadership oversight of all medical staff functions (i.e. OPPE, FPPE, peer review). The Chair will collaborate with hospital leaders and clinical department chairs across SCVH to ensure delivery of pathology and laboratory services consistently and accurately, timely results that directly impact patient safety, diagnosis care and will be responsible for developing and implementing clinical or educational programs for the department. Dedicated administrative time commensurate to the administrative workload will be provided.
