Summary

Currently, we are looking to add a Minnesota licensed Professional Engineer (PE) in a Lead Engineer role to our growing engineering team. This position reports directly to the Engineering Department Manager and is primarily in-office at our Shakopee location. We offer flexible working hours with the option to work from home for specific situations.

At our company, the focus of the Engineering and Virtual Design and Construction (VDC) teams is to produce plumbing and mechanical construction documents as well as fabrication drawings, coordinated 3D models, and sleeve layout drawings. In addition, the Engineering Department serves as subject matter experts, assisting with project scope development, equipment selection, pricing, and field/service technical support.

The candidate’s role will develop and grow over time to include more leadership opportunities as the company grows. Salary and responsibilities will vary by candidate experience.

The successful candidate will:

Possess a Professional Engineering License in Minnesota with the ability to become licensed in other states.

Be the signing engineer for all construction document deliverables for projects in their charge.

Directly supervise and mentor design staff as well as serve as the project’s primary engineering point of contact.

Collaborate with the Construction Project Manager to ensure projects are on time and budget.

Lead coordination with external clients which include: Owners, Architects, Trade Contractors (Electrical, Structural, Civil, etc.)

Collaborate and serve as a subject matter expert for our internal clients which include: project managers, field superintendents and foremen (Sheet metal, Plumbing, Piping), VDC department, estimators, purchasing managers.

Be comfortable using sound engineering judgment based on experience to make decisions quickly and in a challenging environment, often with little or conflicting information.

The Lead Engineer candidate should come to the interview prepared to discuss specific examples for the following:

Strong knowledge of:

HVAC and mechanical piping systems design including system comparative analysis and selection, packaged equipment, pumps and hydronic systems.

Codes: Minnesota Mechanical and Energy.

ASHRAE Standards (90.1, 62.1, etc.) and Fundamentals (handbooks).

HVAC loads and calculations: spreadsheet based, IES VE.

Working knowledge of:

Codes: Minnesota Fire/NFPA, Minnesota Building (mechanical related), Minnesota Plumbing, Model codes/codes for other states.

SMACNA standards.

Plumbing Systems.

VRF and other refrigeration systems.

Controls and schematics.

The Role:

This position is focused on technical delivery first, with gradual business development responsibility over time. You will lead remediation and cleanup projects while helping develop junior engineers into strong design and consulting professionals.

Your Team

MAG’s Safety Policy Program elevates safety as a core priority, ensuring it is embedded in transportation planning and implementation across the agency and throughout the region. The Safety Team strengthens regional transportation outcomes by conducting studies, identifying emerging needs, evaluating system performance, refining safety processes, and coordinating priorities both within MAG and in collaboration with partner agencies and stakeholders.


The Position

MAG is seeking a qualified transportation engineer to support the activities related to the management and implementation of the Safety Policy Program.

Duties include but are not limited to:

  • Managing scopes, schedules and budgets of transportation planning studies.
  • Assessing, analyzing and evaluating crash data, safety countermeasures, transportation infrastructure design, functionality, cost, schedule, and project risk.
  • Coordinating with key stakeholders for project design and implementation efforts.
  • Managing the procurement, execution and oversight of consultant contracts.
  • Facilitating the MAG Transportation Safety Committee and presenting at public meetings.
  • Responding to inquiries from internal and external stakeholders on safety initiatives.


The Candidate

The ideal candidate will be proficient in leading planning level analysis, coordinating with internal and external agency partners, and have experience with managing consultants or consultant teams. The candidate should have relevant experience in transportation safety planning, demonstrating a strong level of understanding and competency regarding urban traffic safety; multidisciplinary road safety initiatives; standards and best practices; and safety-related data. The candidate should also have experience presenting complex technical information to a diverse set of stakeholders, including members of the public and policy makers. Experience with human factors, safety education, and strong writing skills is a plus.

Education and Experience

  • Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university in Engineering or related field
  • A master’s degree and/or graduate work in a related field, such as urban planning, and public sector experience are preferable.
  • At least three years of related work experience in engineering, urban traffic safety, and/or planning
  • Any equivalent combination of training, education, and experience that provides the required skills, knowledge and abilities
  • Familiarity with standards, practices, and software tools related to transportation safety, such as: MUTCD, Highway Safety Manual, predictive safety methods, and spatial crash analysis using GIS.
