Reporting to the Clinical Manager APP Cardiac Surgery Clinical Inpatient as well as the Chief of Cardiovascular Surgery, this position is responsible for participating in all aspects of pre and postoperative care of the cardiac surgical patient. The mission is to facilitate such care in conjunction with the surgical house staff, and under the supervision of the staff surgeon. This position requires a license as a Nurse Practitioner or Physician's Assistant in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts. Scope: The primary responsibilities of the NP/PA are in relation to the care of patients in the inpatient setting. The responsibilities include
- The NP/PA works under the direction of the surgeon, and duties consist of pre and postoperative care of the surgical patient
- The NP/PA is expected to perform clinical tasks on the patient unit: Placement and removal of Central lines, chest tubes, sutures, and temporary pacing wires as directed by the surgeons, and chief resident.
- The NP/PA will discharge patients (complete discharge paperwork, discharge summary, communicate with cardiologist/PCP when appropriate).
- The NP/PA will organize patient information and participate in patient case conferences both pre and post-operatively.
Job Description:
Job Summary: Participates in all aspects of pre and postoperative care of the cardiac surgical patient. This position will interface with various medical staff attending in providing care/coverage of the patients. Essential Responsibilities:
Performs and documents preoperative evaluation (history and physical examinations). Orders and interprets diagnostic tests.
Examines and evaluates pre and postoperative patients in both inpatient and outpatient settings. Writes orders for medications and treatments. Performs invasive procedures such as: placement of arterial and central venous lines, insertion of chest tubes, intubations of patients, removal of intra-aortic balloon pump catheters.
Collaborates with staff surgeon and house staff in educating the patients and their families in medical care. Works with staff in providing patient care in the following locations: the intensive care units (CCU, CVICU, MICU), Cardiac Surgery Stepdown Units, PCU, Cardiology Units, and staff cardiac surgeon's clinical practice area.
Inserts and removes of chest tubes (thoracostomy), central line placements, arterial lines and Swan ganz floats. Troubleshoots intra-aortic balloon pump catheters. Removes intra-aortic balloon pump catheters and temporary pacing wires. Initiates blood products for hemodynamically unstable patients.
Required Qualifications:
Master's degree required.
License Nurse Practitioner License required., or Registration Physician Assistant License required., and Certificate 1 Basic Life Support required., and Certificate 2 Advanced Cardiac Life Support required.
3-5 years related work experience required.
NP/PA licensed in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts.
Three to five years experience as a NP/PA with part of that time dealing with highly acute patients on a surgical service.
American Heart Association BLS/ACLS
Basic familiarity with computers. Ability to navigate at a basic level within web-based applications.
