Opus Genetics is committed to building an innovative, efficient and sustainable science based and commercial ophthalmic biopharmaceutical company leading the development of transformative gene therapies for the treatment of inherited retinal diseases (IRDs) and therapies to treat patients with other retinal and refractive disorders.


Job Summary: 

The Director of Process Development and Manufacturing will be the technical lead for development and manufacturing of assigned assets within the Opus gene therapy programs focusing on technical transfer and process development and execution supporting product development and manufacturing to achieve company goals and strategies. This includes working collaboratively with external partners (i.e. CDMOs, contract labs, suppliers) to develop technical studies, analyze complex data, make data driven decisions, and author, review, and approve technical and regulatory documents. The ideal candidate will have a deep technical understanding of AAV gene therapy upstream and downstream development and process optimization.  This role will directly interact with the CDMO/contract partners and be responsible for building and maintaining excellent working relationships. Knowledge of manufacturing platforms, consistent with AAV technology, at scales ranging from process development through GMP and PPQ activities. The candidate will be hands-on and expected to provide content to all these areas. 

Duties/Responsibilities: 

·      Work with Opus CDMO/contract manufacturing and laboratory partners to develop a phase appropriate robust manufacturing program to support the process development and engineering of pre commercial and commercial cGMP material to support pre-clinical studies, clinical trials, and commercial supply. 

·      Support, author, and review/approve manufacturing plans and documentation including technical transfer, batch records and documentation, product specifications, stability programs, bridging and comparability studies, and other reports utilizing phase appropriate QbD best practices.

·      Support, author, and review/approve manufacturing documentation including testing records, certificates of testing/analysis, campaign summary reports, investigations, etc. 

·      Support, author, and review/approve regulatory documentation including pINDs, INDs, agency responses, CMC meeting requests and briefing packages, and BLAs.   

·      Ensure proper reference standard material is in place, tested, and released for each product. Lead technology transfer between sites. 

·      Ensure regulatory requirements are in place to support manufacturing campaigns with respect to Master Cell Banks, Plasmids, Drug Substances, Drug Products, and Diluents, to prevent developmental delays and or interruptions to clinical programs or regulatory filings.

·      Perform the role of person in plant as needed at the Opus CDMO/contract manufacturing partner’s sites. Act as the CMC expert during audits and interactions with regulatory agencies. 

·      Manage work to project plans for multiple gene therapy programs in the preclinical, pre-IND, IND/clinical, and commercial stages. 

·      Identify and lead the resolution of operational and functional level challenges, work with program and/or function managers to escalate issues to senior management.

·       Hands on resolution to issues/content generation. Design effective and high-quality presentations and progress reports, as requested.

Education and Experience: 

·      Master’s degree (minimum) from an accredited institution in a science or health-related field with minimum of 7-10 years of experience in the pharmaceutical or biotechnology industry. Ophthalmology experience is preferred.

·      Additionally, a minimum of 5 years of direct manufacturing experience for biopharmaceuticals. Preference will be given for direct AAV gene therapy experience. Previous CDMO/contract lab experience also preferred.

·      Experience designing and executing technical transfer and scale up campaigns and associated documentation.

·      Experience in writing and reviewing regulatory submissions including pINDs, INDs, Meeting Requests/Briefing Packages, Annual Report/DSUR’s, and BLAs. 

·      Experience with FDA and/or other regulatory agency requirements and interactions.

·      Strong skill set in interacting with multidisciplinary teams for preclinical and clinical development. Clear understanding of the drug development process with experience in multiple phases.

·      Experience with Orphan/Rare Disease programs, and/or Fast Track/Breakthrough Therapy is a plus.

·      Demonstrated leadership skills and ability to influence across all levels of a cross-functional team without direct managerial authority. Experience in risk assessment, negotiation, and problem solving/mitigation.

·      Outstanding interpersonal skills, ability to communicate effectively in both oral and written form, with effective time management skills needed to manage multiple ongoing projects simultaneously.

Responsibilities*


Assisting the Department Chair

  • Draft, edit, format, and proof communications, documents, reports, presentations, and other technical writing using Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Dropbox, Outlook, Google Workspace, and website editing software. Requires understanding of the Department's strategic objectives and related data, with the ability to produce high-quality work products independently.
  • Manage complex calendar for the Department Chair.
  • Schedule meetings for Department Leadership, often coordinating with high-level University contacts in a professional and efficient manner.
  • Organize and staff departmental meetings, including faculty and committee meetings. Responsibilities include preparing agendas, distributing meeting materials, recording minutes, conducting post-meeting surveys (using Qualtrics or similar software), and tracking follow-up actions.
  • Coordinate domestic and international travel arrangements for the Chair, including airfare and transportation, hotel accommodations, detailed travel itineraries, and supporting materials.

Event Management and Visiting Speaker Coordination

  • Collaborate with Department leadership and the Communications Specialist to organize the annual seminar series and lectureships. Responsibilities include arranging speakers' travel (air and ground transportation, hotel accommodations, detailed itineraries, and necessary preparation materials) as well as processing reimbursements and honorariums.
  • Coordinate on- and off-campus departmental events in partnership with Department leadership and the Communications Specialist, ensuring event objectives are met. Duties include managing event budgets and logistics (room scheduling, equipment, vendor relations, catering, invitations, RSVPs, and communications), and tracking and documenting follow-up activities as needed. Key annual events include the Department's picnic, faculty retreat, and annual retreat.


Access and Human Resources Assistance

  • Provide limited support for student temporary appointments, including preparing job postings and offer letters, processing appointments, and assisting with onboarding and offboarding.
  • Manage Department building access, key requests, and Level 2 access, ensuring all necessary lab safety training requirements are met prior to granting access.
  • Collaborate with the Children on Campus Program and EHS to support high school appointments, including coordinating the Genetics Immersion Program and assisting with high school students working in faculty labs during the summer.


Faculty Affairs Assistance

  • Assist with the faculty recruitment process, including arranging candidate visit schedules; coordinating air and ground travel reservations, hotel accommodations, and detailed travel itineraries; and preparing necessary materials. Serve as the primary contact and escort for faculty candidates. Support the appointment process for newly selected faculty in collaboration with the Office of Faculty Affairs and Department Leadership, and help onboard new faculty members.
  • Assist with the faculty promotion process in coordination with Office of Faculty Affairs and Department Leadership.
  • Support faculty appointments in partnership with the Office of Faculty Affairs and Department Leadership, including emeritus and adjunct appointment renewals, LEO lecturer renewals, appointment changes, faculty retirements, and terminations. Assist with both onboarding of new faculty and offboarding of departing faculty.


Programmatic Support

  • Support Department-sponsored academic activities, including coordinating student and research fellow attendance at the American Society of Human Genetics (ASHG) conference and organizing the Department's alumni event at ASHG. Also assist with staff and faculty attendance for student recruitment efforts at the ABRCMS conference.
  • Provide support for the Department's two summer academic programs: the Genetics Immersion Program, which introduces high school students to genetics, and the Summer Student Program, which engages undergraduate students to learn about our master's and PhD programs in genetics.


Primary Purchasing Back-up

  • Serve as the primary purchasing back-up for the Department helping to process M-Marketsite carts when the Purchasing Clerk is out of the office.


General Front Office Support

  • Serve as a key front office contact, sharing responsibilities such as answering phones, accepting packages, greeting visitors, opening and closing the office, cleaning up after hosted events, scheduling conference rooms, and distributing mail. Submit general fund facility work orders as needed.
  • Provide administrative support to other faculty members as needed, including coordinating complex travel arrangements and scheduling large meetings.

Position description

The Plant and Microbial Biology Department at the University of California, Berkeley seeks applications for an Assistant or Associate Project Scientist in the Shih Lab, in the area of photosynthesis.



This project is a highly collaborative effort between the Shih lab and Niyogi lab at UC Berkeley focused on photosynthesis, carbon fixation, and cyanobacteria. This work will focus on utilizing molecular biology techniques, such as PCR, cloning, and bacterial genetics, to study the genetic basis of carbon fixation. The position will also combine physiological measurements such as chlorophyll fluorescence and gas exchange. The position will have the opportunity to help mentor both graduate and undergraduate students. Within UC Berkeley, the successful candidate will have access to interacting with other photosynthesis labs at UC Berkeley and the Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory.



The position will investigate photosynthesis and carbon fixation in Cyanobacteria using several approaches, including molecular biology, synthetic biology, and microbial genetics. They will be expected to contribute to experimental design, data interpretation, and the writing of their research for publication. They will have the opportunity to present their research in both informal settings (e.g., lab meetings) and larger forums (e.g., scientific meetings).

Job Summary

As the Trade Show Manager, you will take a leading role in planning, coordinating, and executing trade shows and events to reach our target audiences, including pro-contractors, hardware dealers/distributors, and the media. You will help communicate the Makita Advantage to these audiences by creating and executing event plans that include compelling signage and graphics, hands-on product demonstrations, dynamic display structures, efficient lighting, effective lead collection, and more.


Areas of focus will range from budget and calendar planning to asset co-design and sourcing, inventory management, and hands-on activity, including booth set-up and on-site management at select events.

Essential Job Duties

  • Work with the senior communications manager as well as product management, channel marketing, brand marketing, operations, and senior management on a full range of trade show activities. This will include live trade shows in major convention venues.
  • Build the annual Makita U.S.A. trade show calendar and budget.
  • Work with our off-site logistics partner to manage and track asset inventory and display tool inventory for use at trade shows. This includes inspection and inventory reconciliation as well as routine maintenance and repairs.
  • Collaborate with in-house marketing staff and vendors to build booth assets, including structures and signage.
  • Work with the in-house product management team (and occasionally outside vendors) to create demonstrations of key Makita products.
  • Create effective lead collection tactics at trade shows.
  • Coordinate show orders and shipping for select events.
  • Coordinate on-site details for select events, including shipping and receiving, staffing, and set-up.

Skills Required

  • Familiarity with best practices in trade show booth construction, including lighting and graphics.
  • Basic inventory management of trade show assets.

  • Strong ability to proactively coordinate numerous projects while maintaining follow-up and follow-through skills.
  • Strong attention to detail.

  • Ability to read, analyze, and interpret general business periodicals, technical procedures, or trade show regulations.
  • Ability to write reports, business correspondence, and procedure manuals (e.g., booth set-up instructions).
  • Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from groups of managers and vendors.
  • Ability to learn: Obtain knowledge and understanding of our power tools, competition, target professional users, the product applications, and the types of dealers that support the users.
  • Presentation skills: Organize information and present to both internal and external audiences.
  • The ability to work under pressure and with constantly changing priorities
  • Experience in executing a trade show booth “from the ground up”, including arranging shipping and on-site booth set-up, as well as ordering and tracking on-site show services.




Supervisory Responsibility

This position does not have supervisory responsibilities.



Work Environment

This position is based full-time in the Makita U.S.A. Home Office in La Mirada, CA.


EVENTS: This position will include indoor and outdoor events. The work environmental characteristics for these events include the following:


  • The employee may be exposed to moving mechanical parts and outside weather conditions.
  • In rare instances, activity goes into the night and proceeds until completion, rain or shine.
  • The employee is occasionally exposed to fumes or airborne particles, as well as risk of electrical shock and vibration. Personal protective equipment is provided, and professional labor is on hand to manage advanced electrical applications.
  • The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate. At select trade shows, noise levels are similar to a construction job site. Hearing protection is provided.




Education and/or Experience Desired

  • Five to ten years of related trade show and event experience in venues including convention halls.
  • Experience in executing a trade show booth “from the ground up”, including arranging shipping and on-site booth set-up, as well as ordering and tracking on-site show services.



Travel: The expected travel for this role is up to 15%.
