The Principal Mechanical Design Engineer (Data Center Infrastructure) is a technical leader responsible for the architecture, integration, and validation of advanced mechanical systems supporting hyperscale data center environments. This role requires deep expertise in liquid cooling technologies (single-phase and two-phase), hydronic system design, structural integration, and manufacturable rack-level infrastructure solutions.

This role is responsible for defining system performance requirements, developing technical specifications, selection and integration of critical components, and leading mechanical design from concept through production release. Responsibilities include wetted material selection, thermal and structural analysis, fastening strategies, component layout, and design for manufacturability. Partners cross-functionally to deliver reliable, scalable, and cost-effective Data Center Infrastructure solutions while advancing innovation in liquid cooling performance.

What will you do?

- Lead the end-to-end mechanical design and engineering of hyperscale Data Center Infrastructure (DCI) systems, including liquid-cooled rack assemblies, CDUs, manifolds, enclosures, structural frames, and associated hydronic piping systems.

- Serve as the technical authority for single-phase and two-phase liquid cooling architectures, including primary and secondary loop design, in-rack distribution, and system integration within hyperscale data center environments.

- Define and validate operational performance requirements for liquid-cooled infrastructure, including pressure ratings, hydrostatic limits, temperature ranges, flow rates and uniformity, thermal expansion, durability, and serviceability.

- Design, analyze, and validate machined components, welded fabrications, manifolds, and structural systems using advanced engineering principles, including stress analysis, finite element analysis (FEA), flow modeling, and structural load calculations to ensure mechanical integrity and code compliance.

- Lead wetted material selection and compatibility analysis for liquid cooling systems, including corrosion mitigation strategies, surface treatments, cleanliness standards, and long-term durability considerations.

- Develop and review CAD models and complete technical data packages using CREO, SolidWorks, or equivalent tools; ensure design accuracy, manufacturability, and system-level integration.

- Author and approve technical specifications for piping systems, rack-level cooling infrastructure, and hydronic components, including installation guidelines, maintenance procedures, testing requirements, and compliance with applicable standards (ASME, ISO).

- Establish and oversee validation protocols including hydrostatic pressure testing, leak detection and mitigation, flow resistance analysis, and corrosion verification to ensure regulatory compliance and operational reliability.

- Evaluate customer design proposals and technical specifications to assess feasibility, manufacturability, cost, and risk; provide recommendations to optimize performance and total cost of ownership.

- Lead cross-functional design reviews with electrical, thermal, manufacturing, quality, and supply chain teams to ensure full system integration and compliance with product specifications and applicable plumbing and hydronic codes.

- Optimize rack manifold design and manufacturing processes, including machining, welding, surface finishing, connection interfaces, venting and draining strategies, and flow path optimization to enhance performance and manufacturability.

- Drive continuous improvement in manufacturing assembly methods and tooling in collaboration with production teams and equipment vendors to improve quality, scalability, and cost efficiency.

- Lead root cause investigations for complex mechanical failures identified during validation or field deployment and implement corrective design improvements.

- Provide technical leadership in vendor qualification and management for mechanical components and liquid cooling subsystems.

- Identify and mitigate technical risks impacting performance, schedule, or cost, and contribute to R&D initiatives advancing liquid cooling technologies and system innovation.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Education:โ€ฏ

- Bachelorโ€™s degree in Mechanical Engineering, Systems Engineering, or a related engineering discipline from an accredited university.

Experience:โ€ฏ

- 8 years' experience in mechanical design and integration of mission-critical systems.

- Proven track record of successful system designs and implementations in a relevant industry

- Strong understanding of mechanical systems, integration strategy, and system coordination

- Familiarity with industry standards and regulations related to Energy Storage Systems and Data Center Infrastructure is preferred.

The Mechanical Engineering group in the Shipboard Effectors Department seeking an experienced Mechanical Engineer REA (Responsible Engineering Authority) to contribute to the mechanical technical team for a common Guidance Unit (Stack). This role is primarily responsible for maintaining mechanical Technical Data Package (TDP) configuration changes, driving producibility updates, supporting failure investigations, supporting alternate component and material evaluations and testing, providing support across the full spectrum of mechanical, environmental, structural, and thermal engineering disciplines. Additionally, the mechanical engineer will be part of a small team of mechanical engineers, ensuring successful support of both production and development efforts.

This is an onsite role and located in Tucson, Az.


What You Will Do

  • Serve as the mechanical engineer to support documentation, mechanical, environmental, structural, and thermal aspects of different stack configurations.ย 

  • Contribute to a small team of mechanical production REAs supporting mechanical production and development efforts, ensuring technical excellence and alignment with program objectives.ย 

  • Oversee and manage all mechanical, slice and stack TDP configuration changes, ensuring updates address producibility improvements, yield optimization, and design enhancements.ย 

  • Lead efforts to analyze and incorporate producibility updates into designs to improve manufacturing efficiency and reduce production defects.ย 

  • Support failure investigations, conducting root cause analyses and implementing corrective actions to resolve systemic mechanical issues.ย 

  • Provide technical guidance on mechanical design, analysis, and integration challenges, ensuring compliance with program requirements and performance specifications.ย 

  • Drive design for manufacturability (DFM) practices and lead efforts to identify and implement cost-saving opportunities in mechanical assemblies.ย

You will design, analyze, build, test, and fly a system of actuators, mechanisms, and structural modifications to enable remote piloted aircraft. Own your hardware from initial conception through flight test and certification...this is cradle-to-grave engineering with hands-on build, test, and integration. Lead cross-functional trades and drive performance and design decisions to closure. You will bring a sense of humility, and be ready to both learn and teach.

Basic Success Criteria

  • BS in mechanical or aerospace engineering, or equivalent experience

  • Perform thermal design and analysis tasks on complex mechanical hardware including precision mechanisms, electro-mechanical devices, aerospace mechanism design, complex electronics packaging, supporting space-based deployable mechanisms, avionics, innovative thermal and ground based systems
  • Create and analyze design concepts using thermal analysis software & FEA
  • Defines and establishes the technical approach to meet assigned objective
  • Directs, coordinates and provides assistance to engineering team in order to meet assigned objectives
  • Program support also includes requirements derivation and verification, system architecture development, loads derivation, trade studies, design sensitivity/optimization studies, preliminary and final design analysis, generation of analysis documentation (including presentation materials, and deliverable data packages), and leading system test activities
  • Organization of thermal design and analysis as an IPT lead; frequently interfacing directly with customer technical leads and management.
  • Prepares reports, formal documentation and presentation materials summarizing analysis results and present results to both external and internal groups, including leadership and customers
  • Participates in and present information for Preliminary Design reviews (PDR), Critical Design Reviews (CDR) and Technical Interchange Meetings (TIM)
  • Interfaces with outside suppliers/customers and other engineering disciplines to drive designs to closure (Structural, Systems Engineering, Electrical, Manufacturing, Performance, Quality, Configuration Management)
  • Presents design details at program reviews to customers and independent reviewers
  • Development of thermal test plans to manufacture and test payload sensor systems
  • Support new business opportunities
  • Mentor junior level engineers

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's Degree in Mechanical Engineering or other related engineering or science degree and minimum 9 years of prior relevant experience. Graduate Degree and a minimum of 7 years of prior related experience. In lieu of a degree, minimum of 13 years of prior related experience
  • 7+ years of professional experience using thermal analysis tools such as Thermal Desktop (preferred), Sinda, Flotherm, Icepak, etc.
  • 4+ years of providing technical leadership to a multi-disciplinary mechanical engineering team through system requirements, design, analysis, test, hardware build, delivery and launch
  • Professional experience with thermal analysis of mechanical and electronic systems, in space, air or ground environments
  • Professional experience with thermal vacuum testing
  • Ability to obtain and maintain a U.S. TS/SCI Security Clearance

Preferred Additional Skills:

  • Experience with finite element analysis software
  • Able to support design decisions with well documented engineering analyses and calculations
  • Able to analyze problems and to focus and drive down to the root cause of problems quickly
  • Experience in leading engineering teams from conceptual through detailed design phases
  • Experience as a lead engineer, project engineer, or IPT lead is a plus.
  • Experience with Microsoft office tools (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, etc.)
  • Active TS/SCI clearance

In compliance with pay transparency requirements, the salary range for this role in California, Massachusetts, New Jersey, Washington, and the Greater D.C, Denver, or NYC areas is $122,000.00 - $227,000.00. This is not a guarantee of compensation or salary, as final offer amount may vary based on factors including but not limited to experience and geographic location. Boeing Defense Space & Security (BDS) Phantom Works Division is seeking an Experienced Mechanical Systems Design & Analysis Engineer for advanced aircraft development programs located in Hazelwood, MO.

Position Responsibilities:

  • Support the development and documentation of mechanical and fluid system and thermal environment requirements to establish the system design
  • Support the development, maintenance or modification of system, component and installation designs/proposals to provide design documentation to downstream groups
  • Perform and document system performance using computational analysis tools to validate and verify systems and components meet requirements and specifications

Basic Qualifications (Required Skills/Experience):

  • Bachelor of Science degree in Engineering (with a focus on Mechanical, Civil, Aerospace Aeronautical or Material Sciences)
  • 5 or more years' related work experience or an equivalent combination of technical education and experience

Preferred Qualifications (Desired Skills/Experience):

  • Secondary Power, Aircraft-Mounted Accessory Drive (AMAD) gearbox, Auxiliary Power System (APS); Auxiliary Power Unit (APU), Air Turbine Starter (ATS), or Fire Protection development and qualification experience
  • Experience in developing mechanical system architecture
  • Ability to write component and subsystem specifications and statements of work
  • Technical interchange and oversight of suppliers developing mechanical or electro-mechanical systems hardware
  • Experience leading integration and test planning efforts of complex mechanical or electro-mechanical subsystems
