The Boeing Missile & Weapon Systems division is seeking a Software Engineering Manager to oversee the Small Diameter Bomb (SDB) software team in St. Charles, MO (St. Louis Metro Area). Position Responsibilities:

• Manage software engineering team through the software development life cycle.

• Develops and maintains relationships and partnerships with peers, business partners, customers, and other stakeholders.

Responsibilities

As a Flight Software Manager at Reliable Robotics, you'll lead and grow the team responsible for the safety critical flight software that makes the aircraft fly. You'll own the maturation of engineering processes to balance immediate engineering execution with formal DO-178C verification, supporting rapid integration and testing of GNC algorithms while building out the software architecture for certification.

You'll provide technical and architectural guidance on flight software components, from flight controls to redundancy management. • Drive security-by-design across the delivery lifecycle including IAM, network architecture, secrets management, and compliance automation.

Leadership & Client Advisory

• Lead engineering teams ranging from small squads to 10+ person delivery teams, scaling leadership approach to the needs of each engagement.
• Mentor and develop engineers at all levels through code reviews, pairing, and design coaching.
• Operate as a trusted advisor to client technical leadership and executive stakeholders. Communicate trade-offs clearly and build confidence.
• Influence without direct authority — driving alignment across cross-functional teams through technical credibility and stakeholder management.
• Lead discovery and requirements elicitation, surfacing the underlying business need beyond the stated request.
• Produce clear written artifacts: technical proposals, architecture decision records, SOWs, and executive-level status communication.

Qualifications:

Must-Haves:

• Bachelor's or Master's degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, or a related field.
• 10+ years in software engineering with demonstrated experience in architecture and technical leadership roles.
• 3+ years hands-on with AI/ML in production. Broad fluency across generative AI (LLMs, RAG, fine-tuning, agents), MLOps (model serving, pipelines, experiment tracking), and AI-integrated product development.
• Consulting or client-facing delivery experience with a proven ability to integrate into client organizations and establish credibility with technical and executive stakeholders.
• Full-stack engineering capability across frontend, backend, infrastructure, and data layers. Proficiency in multiple modern languages (e.g., Python, TypeScript/Node.js, C#/.NET, Java, or Go) with the ability to move between them as engagements require.
• Multi-hyperscaler depth across AWS and Azure, including their respective AI/ML service ecosystems (Bedrock, SageMaker, Azure OpenAI, Azure ML). GCP experience is a plus.
• Strong fundamentals in distributed systems, event-driven architecture, API design, and DevOps/platform engineering.
• Experience leading engineering teams in agile delivery environments.
• Business acumen with the ability to connect architecture decisions to cost, timeline, and organizational impact.
• Executive presence and communication skills effective with both technical and non-technical audiences.

THE ROLE

You'll lead the entire software development team — full responsibility for daily operations, performance management, and career development. You report directly to the CTO. You'll be expected to own execution while aligning closely with engineering leadership on process and standards. This is a people-and-process leadership role, not an architecture or project management position. Those functions exist separately in the organization.

WHAT YOU'LL DO

People Management

• Directly manage all software developers - daily presence, daily accountability

• Own performance management: goal setting, reviews, coaching, PIPs when necessary

• Drive career development and individual growth plans

• Handle difficult conversations directly - this is the job, not a side effect of it

• Build a culture of ownership, craftsmanship, and professional accountability

Sprint Operations & Delivery

• Run sprint planning, standups, reviews, and retrospectives

• Enforce sprint commitments — manage scope creep and prevent mid-sprint pivots

• Assign developers to projects based on skills, capacity, and priority

• Ensure all work entering a sprint has a signed-off PRD, ready for work, and confirmed capacity

Quality & Release Management

• Enforce Definition of Done at ticket and release level

• Own code freeze discipline - hard dates

• Partner with QA leadership on release quality gates

• Maintain release cadence

• Build and maintain dashboards: velocity, rework rate, escaped defects, code freeze compliance

Cross-Functional

• Coordinate with architecture, QA, and sprint operations functions

• Provide weekly status to CTO: velocity, quality, blockers, upcoming releases

• Interface on resource allocation, hiring, and organizational strategy

WHAT WE NEED

This role requires genuine technical depth. You'll be managing experienced engineers who expect their leader to understand what they're building. We need someone who has spent years writing production code and architecting systems before moving into leadership - someone who chose management, not someone who defaulted to it.

Required:

• BS in Computer Science, Software Engineering, or equivalent technical degree (Mathematics, Engineering) — no exceptions

• 10+ years of professional software development experience including production coding and system architecture

• 3+ years managing development teams of 15+ people

• Ability to review architecture decisions, challenge bad estimates, and hold technical standards

• Proven track record in performance management and difficult conversations

• Experience with Agile/Scrum ownership (not just participation), release management, and quality gate enforcement and continuous delivery and kanban

• Multiple companies/environments - not a single-company career

• Local to the greater Philadelphia area. In-office minimum Monday, Wednesday, Friday.

• Must be authorized to work in the United States. Visa sponsorship is not available for this position.

Preferred:

• Healthcare technology, patient safety, or regulated industry experience (HIPAA, HITRUST)

• Experience managing teams with mixed skill levels - senior self-directed engineers alongside junior developers needing daily guidance

• Background scaling development processes from startup to structured operations

• Familiarity with Linear (highly preferred), Jira, or similar tools
