The CVOR Surgical Technologist is an integral member of the surgical team, responsible for maintaining a sterile field, anticipating surgeon needs, and assisting with instruments, supplies, and equipment throughout cardiovascular procedures.
Surgical technologists collaborate closely with surgeons, nurses, and anesthesia providers to ensure safe, efficient, and high-quality patient care in the operative setting.

Our CVOR schedule is Monday through Friday, 0600–1630 , with call requirements for evenings, nights, and weekends.
Experience: Minimum 1 year as a Surgical Technologist required CVOR experience strongly preferred, including cardiac (CABG, valves, TAVR, ECMO, Impella) and vascular procedures (EVAR, TCAR) Summary: The Surgical Technologist III provides support for surgical and interventional cardiac and/or vascular cases, facilitating the safe and effective conduct of invasive surgical procedures, ensuring that the operating room environment is safe, that equipment functions properly, and that the operative procedure is conducted under conditions that maximize patient safety.
Surgical technologists possess expertise in the theory and application of sterile and aseptic technique and combine the knowledge of human anatomy, surgical procedures, and implementation tools and technologies to facilitate a physician's performance of invasive therapeutic and diagnostic procedures.
Competent to perform surgical scrub duties across multiple services.
Must function as a subject matter expert (SME), PI project, or another unit project when needed.
Call is required to ensure emergent patient needs are met.

Competency develops when candidates utilize higher level critical thinking and problem-solving skills. They should possess advanced relevant surgical skills for area of practice and apply their knowledge to emergency situations as they may arise in the operating room. Competent CST II’s use conscious, abstract reasoning and problem solving in planning collaboration with their peers to assess the needs of the patient and surgeon during the surgical procedure. Competent CST II’s practice autonomously in assisting with other duties such as assisting providers and nurses with vaginal deliveries, supply restocking, instrument flow, front desk customer service and engagement. Competent CST II’s are essential to the organization because of their efficiency, ability to set priorities and confidence in managing most situations within their clinical specialty. CST II’s may remain at a competent level indefinitely throughout their career.
Required License Certification and Registration: Incumbent must hold and maintain the Certified Surgical Technologist credential administered by the National Board of Surgical Technology and Surgical Assisting, (formerly LCC-ST). If not certified, evidence of continuous employment in the state of South Carolina as a Surgical Technologist before January 1, 2008 is required.
Basic Life Support required. Thereafter, must maintain a Current Basic Life Support (BLS), either a certification from an American Heart Association (AHA) BLS for Healthcare Providers (or AHA recognized equivalent) or an American Red Cross CPR/AED for Professional Rescuer and Healthcare Provider.

Exhibits a high-level ability to acquire additional surgical skills for progressively more difficult cases and functions as an expert technical resource. Demonstrates an efficient, organized surgical plan for assigned cases. Takes initiative to discuss surgical plan with other members of the healthcare team. Able to troubleshoot instruments and equipment. Anticipates any additional supplies or equipment required for procedures. Acts as a liaison with sterile processing department. Expert level clinical skill, knowledge, and disposition to mentor, precept or train in various modalities. Initiates performance improvement initiatives in conjunction with unit leadership. PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES 1.
Scrubs on all types of operating procedures; handles surgical instruments, sutures & sponges; anticipates the needs of the surgeon, assisting as required.
Maintains strict aseptic technique, identifying and correcting any breaks in technique.
Maintains an accurate count of sponges, sharps and instruments; assumes joint responsibility with the circulating nurse for ensuring that all are accounted for during and after the operation.
Observes patient's condition while in the OR; reports any changes to the staff nurse and/or anesthesia.

Prepares materials to be presented in dept in-service education programs as assigned.

The Surgical Technologist provides safe and efficient care to the surgical patient under the supervision of the registered nurse (RN) and in collaboration with the surgeon. Job Summary and QualificationsThe Certified Surgical Technologist delivers high quality, patient-centered care by performing various functions to support the efficient operation of the surgical suite. Ashley River Tower (ART) perioperative services is located on the fourth floor of the ART building. The ART PACU is a 12-bed unit that provides post-operative care for a diverse population of adult outpatient and inpatient surgeries through various surgical service lines. These include general, plastics, oncology, cardiac, interventional cardiology, thoracic, vascular, colorectal, bariatric, and robotics. ART PACU is open 24/7 except Sunday night, the unit is closed from 7:30pm- 7:30am, with normal Operating Room hours from 7:00am-7:30pm Monday- Friday. PACU call teams are in place Friday PM-Monday AM for add-on cases on the weekends. The clinical programs that service ART are recognized for excellence in cardiac surgery, thoracic surgery, vascular surgery, transplant surgery, as well as general and GI surgery and is nationally recognized for management of chronic pancreatitis, and bariatric surgery. ART PACU focuses care on post-operative recovery from anesthesia including ERAS, pain, respiratory status, hemodynamic stability, and prevention of post-operative complications. Essential Functions
Applies the principles of asepsis in a knowledgeable manner to maintain a sterile environment. Demonstrates competency in select technical and psychomotor skills, judgment and appropriate knowledge base. Provides age specific care to obstetrical patients in accordance with the established policies and procedures of the department.
Assists in organization and coordination of supplies and equipment to maintain an efficient and cost effective department.
Initiates appropriate intraoperative behavior unique to first assisting.
Maintains a safe environment for patients, co-workers and self. Demonstrates awareness of and adherence to safety and legal requirements established at the hospital and unit level and established policies and procedures.
Applies knowledge of normal and pathologic anatomy and physiology.
Performs scrubbing duties as needed.
Performs preceptor duties.
Charges for equipment and supplies.
Assists nurse in planning patient care.
Effectively operates autoclave sterilization units
Assists in room turnover.
