The Registered Respiratory Therapist (RRT) performs cardio-pulmonary evaluation, respiratory care, life support and education of the patient, family and public. The RRT works with in and out patients of all ages with deficiencies and abnormalities of the cardiopulmonary system following established protocols or the prescription of a physician. The RRT can perform respiratory care duties in all areas of the hospital.

Responsibilities
- Conducts prescribed therapeutic procedures to achieve adequate oxygenation
- Respiratory procedures include hand-held nebulizer therapy, incentive spirometry, pulmonary drainage and medical gas administration.
- Initiates, supports and monitors invasive and non-invasive ventilation devices

Education/Accredited Programs
- Graduate with certification of completion from a two year approved training program in Respiratory Care;
- an Associate's Degree is required to meet the requirements of the National Board of Respiratory Care to take the RRT exam.
- Minimum of one year of clinical experience as a Respiratory Therapist in an acute care hospital or long-term ventilator facility is preferred
Licenses/Certifications/Registrations
- Licensed Respiratory Therapist/Technician in accordance with Title VIII of N.Y. State Education Law. Required to obtain a NYS Respiratory Therapist license within 6 months of employment.
Registration:
- Registered Respiratory Therapist (RRT) by the National Board for Respiratory Care.
Certificates:
- Current BLS, ACLS, PALS, NRP certification is required with recertification every two years.

Responsibilities
- Completes the MDS, CAA’s and care plans within regulated time frames.
- Coordinates scheduling the RAI process with the interdisciplinary team
- Assesses resident through physical assessment, interview and chart review.
- Discusses resident care needs with care givers, including physician, nursing, social services, therapy, dietary, and activity staff
