Job Description

Uncommon Middle School History teachers work in grade level teams and departments to push students towards being self-guided learners. Our teachers develop subject mastery and have a keen sense of the socio-emotional changes middle school students experience. History classes aim to empower students' voices and develop them into global citizens by emphasizing textual analysis, analytical writing, and discourse. Teachers also use engaging instructional strategies to make history come alive! At the conclusion of eighth grade, students are prepared for the academic autonomy and college preparatory focus of our high schools.

Responsibilities

1.     Instruction

  • You'll facilitate student-led discourse of historical topics, where students grapple with open-ended guiding questions, engage in peer-to-peer debate, and synthesize arguments.
  • You'll guide students to understand the author's claim and the power of sourcing while developing the skills of argumentation, corroboration, inquiry, and historiography through primary and secondary source analysis.
  • You'll teach an in-house curriculum that prioritizes the diverse histories of Indigenous peoples, African Americans, women, ancient cultures, and the impact all of these groups have had on the development of the United States.

High School Teachers hold the primary responsibility for the implementation and development of Uncommon’s curriculum and the success of its students. We are seeking a high school Visual Arts Teacher to lead basic, intermediate, and advanced art courses for teenage students. This role will oversee instruction across multiple fine art disciplines, including drawing, painting, sculpture, ceramics, and mixed media, with opportunities for students to develop a cohesive portfolio of work over time. Courses will balance technical skill-building, creative expression, and critical analysis, while integrating art history, contemporary art practices, and visual literacy.

At Uncommon, our College Counselors work closely with students and parents to find the right colleges and universities to match their goals and enable them to achieve their dreams. College Counselors ensure aligned college matches for students regarding school community, size, location, student to faculty ratio, academic interests, financial aid, and extracurricular interests. The ultimate goal of the College Counselor is to ensure that each student graduates ready to thrive in college and beyond.

Responsibilities:

  • You'll teach 11th and 12th grade college seminar courses in which you will guide students through the entire college application process. This includes (but is not limited to) exploring careers, identifying most appropriate post-secondary pathways, writing personal statements, building resumes, securing letters of recommendation, and applying for financial aid and scholarships.
  • You'll build a culture of college and career readiness amongst all students by creating inspirational and instructional signage, advising students in the course selection process, and helping plan and execute events such as Career Day, SAT School Day, Senior Signing Day, College Acceptance Forums, College Visits and Alumni Day.
