PRECEPTOR PROGRAM OVERVIEW Structured onboarding designed specifically for new graduate RNs One-on-one mentorship with experienced nursing staff Gradual increase in patient care responsibilities as competencies develop Ongoing feedback, evaluation, and professional development support Program length and clinical rotations may vary depending on individual progress and departmental needs RESPONSIBILITIES Deliver comprehensive nursing care using the nursing process and evidence-based practices Develop and revise patient care plans based on ongoing assessment and patient/family input Perform admission assessments, skin assessments, and documentation of patient conditions Administer medications, IVs, and perform procedures such as wound care, catheterization, and post-operative support Respond appropriately to patient status changes and coordinate care with physicians and support staff Collaborate with and learn from preceptors, charge nurses, and interdisciplinary team members Progressively assume independent patient assignments as part of the preceptor program Support safety initiatives, infection control protocols, and hospital quality improvement activities KNOWLEDGE AND EXPERIENCE Graduate of an accredited nursing program Active Registered Nurse license with the State of Alaska (or ability to obtain prior to start) Current BLS certification required; ACLS preferred or obtained within a specified timeframe PALS required within 6 months (specialty certifications required for OB/ICU roles) Strong communication, documentation, and critical thinking skills Willingness to learn and adapt in a fast-paced clinical environment Ability to manage changing patient conditions with support from preceptors and team members Familiarity with electronic health records (EHR) preferred Physical Requirements: Must be able to lift up to 50 pounds and perform moderate physical activity, including walking, standing, and sitting ENVIRONMENT The South Peninsula Hospital is a combined 22-bed Acute Care Critical Access Hospital and 28-bed Long Term Care facility located at the southern end of the Kenai Peninsula in South-Central Alaska.
Nurses experience a close-knit, team-based environment with the flexibility to float between units as needed—making it an ideal setting for new graduates to gain broad clinical experience.
Due to the nature of the work, there is exposure to infectious diseases, bodily fluids, and potential for needle-stick injuries—strict adherence to safety protocols is essential.
