Job Description:

The Anthropology Program in the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences at Iowa State University in Ames, Iowa, in the Department of World Languages and Cultures invites applications for an Assistant Teaching Professor of Anthropology. The area of specialization is North American archaeology, with preference given to candidates with experience teaching courses in quantitative and spatial analyses, archaeological field and laboratory methods, and managing cultural resources such as archaeological sites and historic structures.

Iowa State's Anthropology Program supports vibrant Bachelor of Arts/Bachelor of Science and Master of Arts programs. The successful candidate will be expected to contribute to these programs through teaching undergraduate and graduate classes, mentoring students, and contributing to departmental and institutional service. This position involves the standard course load of six courses per year, which translates to 75% FTE for teaching faculty. The successful candidate will be expected to teach three courses in the fall and three courses in the spring.

Initial appointment length is three years starting August 16, 2026. Renewal is possible and renewal parameters are determined by performance and department need.

Candidates must be legally authorized to work in the U.S. on an ongoing basis without sponsorship. Immigration sponsorship is not available for this position.

Required Minimum Qualifications:
PhD in Anthropology or related field conferred by time of appointment
Teaching experience at the university level

Preferred Qualifications:
Experience with managing cultural resources
Multiple seasons of field work experience
Demonstrated ability to develop new courses relevant to North American archaeology such as resource management, geospatial statistics, statistics, or lithic analysis
Demonstrated ability to teach a wide range of courses in the Anthropology curriculum including Archaeology courses
Demonstrated ability to develop collaborative relationships off campus (State Archaeologist's Office, etc.) and/or on campus with faculty in other departments such as Earth, Atmosphere, and Climate, Natural Resources Ecology and Management, and Evolutionary Ecology and Organismal Biology

The Department of World Languages and Cultures is the central resource at Iowa State University for the teaching, research, and study of languages and cultures from a global perspective. The department offers coursework in ten languages with majors in French, German, and Spanish and minors in those languages plus Russian and Chinese. The department is also home to a robust Anthropology program that offers a major, minor, and graduate studies (MA). Other languages taught are American Sign Language, Arabic, Italian, Latin, and Portuguese. It also houses the International Studies, Classical Studies, U.S. Latino/a/x, and Middle Eastern Studies programs. The department's award-winning term- and tenure-stream faculty engage in continuous improvement of teaching and internationally recognized research across a variety of disciplines.

Position description

The University of California, Berkeley, is seeking a Project Processing Archivist for a two-year project, with the possibility of renewal for a third year based on performance and availability of funding, to support the processing of literary collections. Among the collections to be processed are those from a Mellon Foundation-funded project to process and promote archival collections relating to women and poetry at The Bancroft Library. These include the papers of poets Mary Fabili, Aya Tarlow, and Red Jordan Arobateau as well as the records of presses and literary magazines, such as Poetry Flash and the City Lights Books records. The project archivist will also process the analog and born-digital papers of author Amy Tan. The successful candidate employs archival standards, tools, and best practices to provide access to collections containing materials in a range of formats, including audiovisual and digital. The successful candidate also applies effective project management strategies and communicates clearly with project stakeholders.

The Bancroft Library of the University of California, Berkeley, is one of the largest and most heavily used libraries of rare materials in the West. Its holdings include more than 800,000 volumes, 210 million manuscript items, 9 million photographs and other pictorial materials, 86,000 microforms, 9.4 million digital files, and 25,000 maps, as well as numerous other categories of unique material. The two largest collections are the Bancroft Collection of Western and Latin Americana and the Rare Books Collection. The archival and rare book materials of the Magnes Collection of Jewish Art and Life are also part of the Bancroft holdings. The Bancroft is home to three research groups: the Oral History Center (formerly the Regional Oral History Office), the Mark Twain Papers, and the Center for the Tebtunis Papyri. The Bancroft Library is an active center of teaching and research. Responsibilities

The Project Processing Archivist will work under the direction of the Head of Archival Processing and in consultation with other technical services staff, curators, public services staff and, potentially, donors and researchers. Duties will include processing approximately 450 linear feet of literary archival collections and related born-digital materials. The Project Processing Archivist will also participate in outreach activities relating to the project as well as regular departmental activities. Responsibilities include:




  • Archival processing of analog, born-digital, and hybrid archival collections
  • Applying tools used in the special collections and archival communities (e.g., ArchivesSpace, OCLC, Alma, TreeSize, and ePADD)
  • Contributing to project management, which might include helping to manage project documentation, supporting meetings, and contributing to problem-solving and analysis.
  • Overseeing the work of student library employees as needed
  • Consulting and collaborating, as needed, with staff in other Bancroft and UC Berkeley Library units to ensure appropriate processing of varying formats
  • Assisting in planning a public research symposium related to the processed collections supported by the Mellon Foundation grant.
  • Preparing social media and blog posts and a research guide related to the processed collections.
  • Serving a regular weekly two-hour shift on a public services desk

Works independently to perform a variety of professional and administrative duties in support of day-to-day clinical and/or field placements for all program entities within the Hub umbrella. In this position, you will underwrite new and renewal business which includes solicitation, selection and pricing of highly complex multi-line risks (workers compensation, commercial auto, general liability). You will actively and creatively pursue new commercial insurance solutions including guaranteed cost, large deductible and retro account opportunities throughout the territory through your network of national and regional brokers and agents. Maintain and develop prospects in order to have a strong base of future opportunities to build your large account book. Contribute to the development of broker and agency management strategies and lead the development and execution of relationship management plans.



Responsibilities:





  • Analyze, select and profitably price coverage for commercial risks and determine terms and conditions of coverage on new and renewal business.

  • Apply and conform to underwriting rules and guidelines, rating manuals, insurance laws/ regulations.

  • Utilize a consultative selling approach to generate new business consistent with underwriting strategy and in coordination with service team members to include accurately assessing the needs of the broker and the client and formulating solutions that effectively address those needs.

  • Analyze underwriting & marketing activities and corresponding results; prepare reports to management.

  • Mentor and provide technical training and guidance to coworkers.

  • Determine, coordinate and direct account management activities with various departments.

  • Negotiate and deliver proposals to producers and buyers.

  • Develop and maintain client relationships and coordinate service team efforts.

  • Identify opportunities for organizational improvement and recommend solutions.

  • Demonstrate commitment to Company's Code of Business Conduct and Ethics, and apply knowledge of compliance policies and procedures, standards and laws applicable to job responsibilities in the performance of work.



Requirements:


  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent experience required.

  • 7 years of casualty underwriting with an insurance carrier required.

  • Advanced understanding and technical knowledge of underwriting mechanics and fundamentals.

  • Advanced knowledge of casualty coverage and loss sensitive deal structures (retrospective rating, large deductible, captive, and self-insurance). Additional knowledge in financial analysis, account management and collateral management is desired.

  • Advanced knowledge of local and regional market conditions as well as industry trends.

  • Prior experience in or knowledge of Midwest markets and ability to travel within these markets is strongly preferred.

  • Advanced knowledge of underwriting territory and strong relationships with the local distribution network (local and regional agents, national and regional brokers, and select consultants).

  • Demonstrated proficiency in the successful marketing and prospecting of business opportunities, as well as, relationship building and agency management skills.

  • Ability to create a presence that conveys interest, conviction, and energy in maintaining relationships with external business partners.

  • Strong ability to effectively communicate verbally and in writing to uncover business needs.

  • Ability to foster creative solutions that resonate with external business partners.

  • Ability to interact with various levels of management and support personnel.

  • Advanced skills in marketing, analysis, decision making/problem solving, planning and organizing; sales and negotiation and mathematical proficiency.

  • Strong desire to work collaboratively and foster a team oriented environment with Claims, Risk Control and other departments.

  • Willingness to travel for business purposes. Underwriters are expected to be visible with their agents and brokers in order to develop and maintain solid relationships and generate an adequate flow of qualified business.

  • Chartered Property Casualty Underwriter (CPCU); Associate in Risk Management designation or other professional designations are desired.
