CHKD's cardiac surgery program is part of a regional collaborative between CHKD and the University of Virginia (UVA), referred to as the Virginia Congenital Cardiac Collaborative. The CHKD program is supported by surgeons with over 50 years of experience, in Dr Umar Boston (Chief of Cardiac Surgery, CHKD) and Dr Phillip Smith (Surgical Director of the Fetal Care Center). Currently, 100 index cardiac surgery cases are performed each year. The planned growth with the new CICU service line is to achieve approximately 200 cases per year. CHKD has committed to establishing a dedicated CICU service line. This commitment also includes building of a new CICU in the 1 st quarter of 2026. The successful candidate will join an established group of surgeons, cardiologists, intensivists, physician extenders, nurses, pharmacists, nutritionists and other health care providers to provide comprehensive care with the shared goal of creating a center of excellence.
