Department: Quality Assurance / Quality Control
Reports To: Quality Manager / Plant Manager
Location: Structural Steel Fabrication Facility
Position Summary
The AISC Certified Quality Control Expert is responsible for implementing, maintaining, and enforcing the Quality Management System (QMS) in compliance with the standards of the American Institute of Steel Construction (AISC), including the AISC Certification Program for Steel Fabricators. This role ensures all fabricated structural steel components meet contract documents, applicable codes, and industry standards before delivery.
Key Responsibilities
1. AISC Compliance & Certification
* Maintain compliance with AISC Certification requirements (e.g., Building Standard, Bridge Standard, or Advanced Certifications as applicable).
* Prepare for and support AISC audits and renewal inspections.
* Maintain documentation in accordance with AISC standards and internal QMS procedures.
* Monitor corrective and preventive action (CAPA) processes.
2. Quality Control Oversight
* Develop, implement, and monitor Inspection & Test Plans (ITPs).
* Conduct in-process and final inspections of fabricated structural steel components.
* Verify dimensional accuracy, material traceability, and surface preparation.
* Ensure adherence to contract specifications, shop drawings, and approved submittals.
3. Welding Quality Control
* Review and approve Welding Procedure Specifications (WPS), Procedure Qualification Records (PQR), and Welder Performance Qualifications (WPQ).
* Ensure compliance with applicable codes such as:
* * American Welding Society (AWS)
* American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM)
* Coordinate Non-Destructive Testing (NDT) including UT, MT, PT, and RT.
* Interface with third-party inspectors and clients for welding inspections.
4. Material Control & Traceability
* Verify incoming material certifications and mill test reports (MTRs).
* Maintain heat number traceability throughout fabrication.
* Control nonconforming materials and ensure proper documentation and disposition.
5. Documentation & Reporting
* Maintain quality records including inspection reports, NDT reports, calibration records, and audit logs.
* Prepare quality reports for management and clients.
* Track and analyze quality metrics for continuous improvement.
6. Training & Supervision
* Train shop personnel on quality standards and procedures.
* Supervise QC Inspectors and ensure consistent inspection practices.
* Promote a culture of quality and safety throughout the facility.
7. Continuous Improvement
* Conduct internal audits of QMS.
* Lead root cause analysis for quality issues.
* Implement corrective actions and process improvements.
Required Qualifications
* AWS Certified Welding Inspector (CWI)
* AISC Certified Quality Control designation (or eligibility).
* Minimum 5+ years of experience in structural steel fabrication.
* Strong knowledge of:
* * AISC Certification Program requirements
* AWS D1.1 Structural Welding Code - Steel
* ASTM material specifications
* Shop fabrication processes (cutting, fitting, welding, blasting, painting)
* Ability to read and interpret structural drawings and specifications.
* Experience with NDT coordination and reporting.
* Proficiency in Microsoft Office and quality management software.
Preferred Certifications
* NDT Level II Certification (UT/MT/PT)
* ISO 9001 Lead Auditor (preferred)
