Our client, a highly respected and established institution of higher learning, is looking to add an In-House Attorney to their dynamic team in Buffalo, New York. This is a hybrid role (3 days in office, 2 days remote).

The individual in this important role will provide legal advice and support to college leadership, administrators and functional managers on a broad range of legal matters, with a primary focus on higher education law and labor and employment issues. The In-House Attorney assists with contracts, policy review, compliance, risk analysis, and employment-related matters and will work under the direction of the Executive Vice President to support the college's operations and mission.

Responsibilities of the role include:

  • Provide guidance to college administrators and managers on the interpretation and application of college policies, higher education regulations, labor and employment laws and other statutory frameworks applicable to college operations.
  • Provide practical legal advice on a variety of matters affecting the college, including labor and employment issues, student matters, compliance, and higher education law, escalating complex or high-risk issues as appropriate.
  • Assist with monitoring and advising on compliance with current and proposed legislation and regulations affecting institutions of higher education.
  • Assist with the review, development, and updating of college policies and procedures in collaboration with college leadership and functional stakeholders to support compliance with applicable laws and regulations.
  • Conduct legal research and prepare written analyses, memoranda, and guidance on issues impacting the college's operations.
  • Support communication and training efforts related to key policies, compliance obligations, and legal requirements for staff, faculty, and students.
  • Draft, review, and negotiate contracts and agreements related to the college's business and operations to help protect the college's legal and business interests.
  • Support risk management and decision-making by identifying legal issues and helping stakeholders understand potential legal and operational impacts.
  • Serve on college committees and participate in institutional initiatives as requested.
  • Engage in ongoing professional development and complete all continuing legal education required to maintain an active law license in the State of New York.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.

Candidates must have the following experience/credentials:

  • 5-7 years of experience in Labor & Employment Law and/or Corporate Law
  • Higher education experience a plus
  • Juris Doctor degree from an accredited law school with strong academic credentials
  • Must be admitted to practice in New York State.
  • Ability to manage multiple matters, and deadlines in a fast-paced environment.
  • Ability to work collaboratively with other areas of the organization

The organization firm offers competitive compensation and a comprehensive benefit package. At this time, the good faith estimate of the annual salary range for this position is $160,000 to $170,000.
