Job Purpose: The purpose of the Veterinary ICU Technician is to provide high quality medical support and nursing care to critical care patients. The Veterinary ICU Technicians assist our board certified critical care doctors in our state of the art ICU to provide constant care to critical care patients. All teams are under the direction of the doctor on staff. The doctor is the lead, and will be prioritizing patients, directing the team and is the ultimate decision maker for all medical treatments, while Shift Leads are the leads for managing the floor and its flow.

Duties & Responsibilities:

Technical Duties

· Identify sudden or minor changes in a patient’s medical condition

· Performs and documents ongoing assessments including observation, physical examination, laboratory/test results, and patient response to procedural intervention

· Participates in the identification and clarification of patient needs, as evidenced by participation in multidisciplinary care planning, to achieve optimal patient outcomes

· Demonstration of sound decision-making in emergency scenarios based on patient conditions such as vital signs, patient presentation, and assessments.

· Ability to think critically in order to learn and maintain a high level of patient care

· Proficient IV catheter placement; Use and maintain IV pumps

· Understands and carries out written and oral directions

· Proficient and accurate drug calculations and administration

· Quality nursing and husbandry care of patients

· Strong working knowledge of veterinary procedures and pharmacology

· Perform in‐hospital lab testing and prepare specimens for outside labs, as needed when lab tech is not available. Report diagnostic testing results to veterinarians

· Perform and/or participate in all other diagnostics such as radiology, ultrasound, ECG, BP, and glucose monitoring

· Provide nursing care for in‐hospital patients including all DVM requested treatments, diagnostics, and medications

  • Accurately and completely record all treatments

· Perform client callbacks as necessary

· Maintain legally defensible medical records in cooperation with veterinarians

· Actively engages in Rounds

  • Rounds delivered/received at shift changes, anytime a staff member comes on shift or leaves a shift
  • Rounds will be complete, detailed, and relative to patient & client care

· Ability to monitor anesthesia utilizing equipment such as pulse oximeter and electrocardiogram

  • Keep accurate anesthesia/surgical medical records

· Maintain cleanliness of ICU, working an patient areas. Ability to delegate cleaning tasks to Technician Assistants and Kennel Assistants as necessary

Administrative Duties

· Log controlled drugs

· Know how to use the inventory module in our veterinary practice‐management software

· Restock shelves and drawers in exam rooms and treatment area

· Follow OSHA requirements

· Follow practice’s health and safety protocols

· Be proficient in using our veterinary practice‐management software (EzyVet, SmartFlow, Timeless)

· Assist Client Administrators as necessary

· Attending staff and individual meetings as scheduled

· Participates in a positive manner in all group sizes.

· Supports team members by assisting other areas, is receptive to feedback and suggestions.

Anticipated Schedule

ICU Technicians will work three 12-hour shifts weekly, either a day or night shift but not a mixture.

We are seeking a dedicated anesthesia technician to join our Neurology service. This specialized department focuses on the diagnosis and treatment of complex neurological conditions affecting the brain, spinal cord, and nervous system. Essential Job Functions
Monitoring for all neurology anesthesia required within the neurology department (MRI’s, Surgery, CSF Taps, CT Scans, etc.)

  • Non-Credentialed Technicians: $25- $31/hr. based on experience

Anticipated Schedule:

    • Sunday - Wednesday

Key Areas Responsibility:
Patient Care
  • Keeping patient clean and dry
  • Knowledge of neurologic diseases and surgical procedures
Phlebotomy
  • Phlebotomy skills for blood samples using cephalic, saphenous, and jugular veins
  • IV catheterization of peripheral veins
  • Knowledge of routine labs and tubes needed for each
Technical Skills
  • Providing aseptic techniques to the workplace
  • IV fluid therapy for neuro surgeries (administration and knowledge of colloids, crystalloids, transfusions and fluid additives)
  • Handling and administering controlled substances
  • Pharmacology Aspect- dose calculations, constant rate infusions, understanding physiological effects of the drugs commonly used. 
  • Administration and knowledge of all anesthetic drugs included in the training manual.    
  • Knowledge of all neurologic surgical procedures: ventral slot, hemi laminectomy, brain, CSF taps.
  • Ability to assist in neurologic diagnostic procedures: MRI, CT, myelogram
  • Monitoring capabilities:  (a). ECG  (b). central venous pressure (c). pulse oximetry (d). esophageal stethoscope (e). non-invasive blood pressure (f). capnography
  • Management of life-threatening emergencies:  cardiovascular, respiratory, and neurological problems include: advanced CPR skills (with electrical defibrillation), assisted ventilation, use of mechanical ventilation, emergency drug calculations and administrations.
  • Instrument/pack preparation and setup
  • Preparation of lab samples
  • Maintaining a legal anesthesia record, recognizing significant events and trends with parameters
  • Recording all drugs administered to patient, noting the dose, time, and route of administration
  • Recording monitored variables on a regular basis (every 5 minutes) during anesthesia
Equipment care
  • Maintenance and preparation of the surgery equipment/ instruments, MRI equipment and suite, anesthesia machine and monitoring equipment.
  • Maintenance and stocking of MRI suite
  • Equipment troubleshooting: IV pumps, monitoring equipment, Doppler, anesthesia machine, pulse ox, etc.
Communications
  • Excellent communication skills with coworkers and with clients
  • Planning procedures/ communication with other departments
  • Providing doctor approved patient updates to clients
Hospital maintenance
  • Making sure the hospital is ready for the next shift/day (clean/stock)
  • Completing any task listed by the supervisor
Qualifications
Neuro Anesthesia Technician Requirements:
  • Ensuring that a responsible individual is aware of the patient’s status at all times during anesthesia and recovery, and is prepared either to intervene, when indicated, or to alert the veterinarian in charge about changes in the patient’s condition.
  • If a technician or other responsible person is unable to remain with the patient continuously, a responsible person should check the patient’s status on a regular basis (at least every 5 minutes) during anesthesia and recovery.
  • Overall assisting the doctors and technicians in providing the best possible care of the patients and offer the clients the best possible service.  As well as excellent communication skills, strong work ethic and a positive attitude, must be flexible and able to adapt to new situations, ability to act as a team player.
Minimum Requirements:
  • Associates or Bachelor’s Degree   
  • Recover or CPR certified
  • Three years + of experience working as a nursing team member in a veterinary hospital is required.
  • One year + of experience with anesthesia techniques and protocols is required.
  • Fluent English skills (speaking & reading) are required for the role; fluency in multiple languages a plus! 
Preferred Qualifications:
  • Credentialed as a Veterinary Technician (LVT/CVT/RVT)
