Position Responsibilities:
Perform all functions related to tool fabrication, rework, and repair as required.
Obtain work orders from the team leader or supervisor, determining assignments based on schedule dates and tool availability.
Read work orders and blueprints to identify required tasks, tools, and equipment.
Develop plans for the fabrication, maintenance, and repair of tools.
Initiate and coordinate engineering change requests with internal support groups when necessary.
Determine the sequence of tool fabrication work, troubleshoot issues, and develop solutions to production challenges.
Access and utilize appropriate tool drawings, models, and specifications using available computing systems.
Select and verify necessary equipment from the shop storage area, ensuring current tool certification.
Perform repairs or replacements on tools as per Standing Tool Order (STO) Production Requests, and request rework orders if necessary.
Layout holes, lines, and other tool features, and install or modify hydraulic, pneumatic, and vacuum tubes as required.
Operate various machinery, including power saws, drill presses, and CNC machines, to shape materials and prepare details.
Move materials and equipment using Powered Industrial Trucks (PIT) and overhead cranes as needed.
Maintain accurate records of orders and coordinate tooling information with other shifts and departments.
Handle hazardous materials in compliance with Boeing procedures, using appropriate personal protective equipment.
Engage in continuous improvement practices to enhance quality, safety, and efficiency in tool and die work.
Use precision measuring instruments, such as micrometers and gauges, to ensure accuracy in fabrication and repairs.
Interface with customers and suppliers to incorporate changes or resolve functional and installation issues.
Submit completed jobs to Quality Assurance and assist inspectors in performing necessary checks or measurements.
Utilize mathematics, including algebra and trigonometry, to calculate dimensions and analyze Model Based Definition (MBD) for fabrication details.
Conduct tool tryouts and make necessary adjustments to ensure production meets quality requirements and specifications.
Physical Demands and Potential Hazards:
Perform physical tasks that include lifting weights ranging from 10-15 lbs to 15-35 lbs.
Engage in various movements such as reaching, handling, turning, twisting, lifting, lowering, climbing, balancing, bending, kneeling, crouching, and squatting.
Work in environments that may involve contact with metals, solvents, and coolants.
Operate in proximity to moving parts and tools, sharp cutters, and potential slipping hazards.

Basic Qualifications:
5+ years of experience in repairing, maintaining, construction, and/or the inspection of tools, dies, jigs, powerfeed, etc.
5+ years of experience in machine shop processes, geometric dimensioning & tolerances, and machining capabilities of different types of materials.

Possesses 4 and 5 axis CNC skills for mill or lathe, and extensive knowledge of detail cutting tool geometry for different cutting tool types and materials.
Ability to reverse engineer and manufacture mold components within time limitations
Ability to read and write G and M code with CAM programming experience.

Job Summary
The Cutting Tool Engineer is responsible for the design, development, and implementation of custom and standard cutting tools used in 4- and 5-axis horizontal milling machines. This role combines hands-on tool design, cutting condition analysis, supplier coordination, and direct collaboration with internal engineering teams and customers to deliver robust, production-ready tooling solutions.
Essential Duties & Responsibilities
Cutting Tool Design & Engineering
• Coordinate design of custom cutting tools and tool assemblies for 4- and 5-axis horizontal machining applications with cutting tool suppliers.
• Develop 3D models and assemblies using SolidWorks or NX, including toolholder interfaces and complete tool stacks.
• Perform collision detection and tool envelope validation within machining environments.
• Optimize tool geometry and tool assemblies for performance, rigidity, tool life, and chip evacuation.
Cutting Condition Analysis
• Develop and maintain Microsoft Excel spreadsheets and macros for cutting condition calculations.
• Analyze machining data to recommend optimized cutting parameters.
• Support continuous improvement efforts through data-driven tooling and process recommendations.
Standard Components & Supplier Management
• Identify, specify, and integrate standard cutting tool components if applicable and still achieve project quality and performance.
• Work directly with suppliers to ensure quality, cost, and in coordination with purchasing department the delivery targets.

Description:Fabricates and assembles details for all types of tooling such as jigs, fixtures, tools and dies, including pierce, blank and form dies, all standard and related tooling, standard power brake punches and dies, form blocks, plastic and wood tools, working in close conjunction with more highly -skilled tooling personnel; scribes lines for contour and hole location layouts from such references as tooling templates; prepares rough tooling stock for final finishing; trims laminated fiberglass tools; performs gating operations preparatory to casting plastic nests and faces for plastic forming tools; installs new or replaces worn or damaged bushings; mixes, prepares and applies plaster to pattern frames; makes splash frames for forming operations and takes less complex types of plaster splashes; clamps structural components for welding and locates tooling reference points on jig structures, tools and dies after methods and sequences have been determined by others; sets up and operates such equipment as drill presses, arbor presses, power shears, power saws, band files, radial drill presses, pedestal and disc grinders, and other power tools to perform such operations as grinding to form and maintain cutters, sanding, drilling, reaming, tapping, spot facing, counterboring, sawing and filing, where it is required to interpret and work from blueprints, tooling drawings and sketches, using machinist hand tools and precision measuring instruments, and exercising a knowledge of cutting characteristics of metals, feeds and speeds of machines and of related machine shop practices and procedures, including shop mathematics.
Fabricates, assembles, and reworks multiple operation router blocks and/or multiple operation hand and hydropress forming blocks and accessories, when required tooling and information are available.
Lays out flat and simple templates using empirical bend allowance formulae.
Makes templates from flat layout masters; makes sample parts from extruded or standard formed materials where pickup and/or interpretation of information from plaster patterns; fabricates individual countour templates for use in box template setups.
Performs modification and rework of the level of difficulty of the operations described above.
PERFORMS SUCH RELATED DUTIES AS:
Fabricates shims, spacers, clamps, jig base and locator pads, ribs and other structural components. Prepares rough die stock, pipe, bar, plate and tubular stock for layout, machining, painting or inspection.
Moves, positions and helps others in handling, moving and positioning parts, dies, tools, equipment, fixtures and heavy materials as assigned; assists others in braking down setups, and returns tools and fixtures to proper sources; lays out and finishes simple templates such as individual trim, drill and bend templates, working from established references and blueprints, duplicates all types of individual templates from master layouts; cuts, fits, punches, shears and repairs templates as required; operates such machinery as saws, routers drill presses, shears, pedestal and disc grinders to perform such routine operations such as trimming, burring, sanding and drilling; performs assembly of tooling.
Paints and properly identifies and codes tooling.
Improvises shop aids to facilitate completion of work assignments.
Performs disassembly and cleaning of tooling. Checks tools for wear, damage, etc., and replaces defective or worn components such as bushings, shims, clamps and pins, and reassembles same.
Helps to maintain work area and machinery in a clean and orderly condition.
May require certifications and must be able to work any shift.
Basic Qualifications:
Utilizes Blueprint Reading and shop mathematics or equivalent.
Must possess a minimum of one year of experience operating machine tools.

The Tool and Die Maker is responsible for the construction, repair, and maintenance of dies, tools, and fixtures used in the manufacturing processes within the stamping plant. This role requires precision craftsmanship, technical expertise, and an understanding of stamping operations to ensure that dies and tools are functional, efficient, and meet all quality standards for production. The ideal candidate will possess a strong background in tool and die making, metalworking techniques, and safety protocols within a manufacturing environment.
Responsibilities
Die Fabrication:
- Fabricate, assemble, and modify stamping dies, jigs, and fixtures used in the production process. Ensure designs meet part specifications and are cost-effective to produce.
Die Maintenance & Repair:
- Perform routine inspections, troubleshooting, and repairs on existing dies and tools. Ensure that dies remain in excellent working condition to minimize downtime during production.
Tool Setup & Adjustment:
- Set up tools and dies for production runs, making precise adjustments to ensure parts meet dimensional and quality requirements.
Quality Control:
- Perform thorough checks and inspections on tools, dies, and stamped parts to ensure they adhere to quality standards and meet customer specifications.
Preventive Maintenance:
- Develop and implement preventive maintenance schedules for dies and tools, addressing potential issues before they cause production delays or quality issues.
Collaboration with Engineering & Production Teams:
- Work closely with engineering and production teams to troubleshoot problems, recommend improvements, and provide feedback on tooling and equipment.
Documentation & Record Keeping:
- Maintain accurate records of die maintenance, repairs, and tool modifications, ensuring all data is properly documented for future reference.
Safety & Compliance:
- Adhere to all safety regulations and guidelines to ensure a safe working environment. Promote a culture of safety within the plant and report potential hazards.
Training & Mentorship:
· Assist in training and mentoring junior tool and die makers or apprentices as needed.
Qualifications
Education and Training:
- High school diploma or equivalent; completion of a formal apprenticeship program in tool and die making or a related field preferred.
- Journeyman certification in Tool and Die Making or equivalent industry experience preferred.
Experience:
- Minimum of 3-5 years of experience as a Tool and Die Maker, preferably in a stamping or manufacturing environment.
- Strong background in die fabrication, repair, and maintenance for metalworking applications.
- Familiarity with various types of dies (progressive, compound, transfer) and materials used in stamping operations.
Skills and Abilities:
- Proficiency with precision measuring instruments (micrometers, calipers, gauges, etc.).
- Ability to read and interpret technical drawings, blueprints, and schematics.
- Advanced knowledge of machining techniques, welding, and grinding.
- Experience using CNC machines, lathes, mills, surface grinders, and other shop equipment.
- Strong problem-solving skills and ability to troubleshoot complex tooling issues.
Physical Requirements:
- Ability to lift and carry up to 50 lbs.
- Comfortable working in a manufacturing environment with exposure to loud machinery and various environmental conditions.
- Capable of standing, bending, and stooping for extended periods during tooling fabrication and machine setup.

Toolroom Manager
Position Overview
The Toolroom Manager is responsible for overseeing the maintenance, repair, and performance of stamping dies and tooling that support production operations. This role leads the toolroom team and ensures tooling is properly maintained to support quality, efficiency, and production uptime. The position works closely with manufacturing, engineering, and maintenance teams to troubleshoot tooling issues, improve processes, and ensure tooling systems operate reliably.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead daily operations of the toolroom, including scheduling and coordinating die maintenance, repairs, and tooling improvements.
- Supervise and mentor tool and die technicians, providing technical guidance and training to support skill development and consistent workmanship.
- Troubleshoot stamping dies, tooling components, and press-related issues to reduce downtime and support efficient production.
- Establish and maintain organized toolroom processes including preventative maintenance schedules, tooling records, and repair documentation.
- Collaborate with engineering and production teams to identify tooling improvements and support new product launches.
- Analyze recurring tooling issues and coordinate corrective actions to improve reliability and performance.
- Ensure tooling repairs and maintenance meet required tolerances and quality standards.
- Support continuous improvement initiatives related to press uptime, tooling life, and overall manufacturing efficiency.
- Maintain a safe and organized working environment within the toolroom.
- Coordinate priorities and workload within the toolroom to ensure production needs are supported.
- Maintain records related to die maintenance, repairs, and tooling performance history.
Qualifications
- Strong background working with tool and die operations in a metal stamping environment
- Previous experience leading, training, or mentoring tool and die technicians
- Solid understanding of stamping dies, die maintenance, and press troubleshooting
- Ability to read and interpret blueprints, engineering drawings, and die specifications
- Experience operating or supporting toolroom equipment such as mills, grinders, lathes, and related machining equipment
- Strong mechanical troubleshooting and problem-solving abilities
- Ability to organize tooling processes and manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced manufacturing environment
- Strong communication and leadership skills
Work Environment
This position operates primarily within a manufacturing environment supporting stamping operations and tooling activities. The role requires regular movement throughout the toolroom and production floor and exposure to typical industrial conditions including machinery, noise, oils, and metalworking equipment.
SUMMARY:
The Tooling Supervisor – Engineer is responsible for all aspects of in-house and external tool tracking, tool and fixture repairs and tool maintenance to ensure that the company objectives are met. The Tooling Supervisor- Engineer will interface between Spectrum Plastics Minneapolis location and external tooling suppliers. This position will be accountable for tracking and meeting all agreed upon tool delivery dates, costs and maintaining spare components.
KEY ACCOUNTABILITIES:
- Actively promote and drive a culture of safety within Spectrum Plastics Group.
- Responsible for tooling P&L, adhere to tool delivery dates and quality of work for all Spectrum MN tooling transactions.
- Participate in support of the quoting sales process. Acquire tooling quotes
- Provide Application and NPI DFM analysis
- Manage and track all tool cleanings, repairs, PM’s, refurbishments, and spare parts.
- Lead tool design reviews and modification methodologies
- Provide technical support on tool issues to the Operations team as needed.
- Effectively measure and drive supplier performance and the reduction of tool lead times and costs.
- Lead and /or assist on sustaining tool design review and modification methodology.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Manage and communicate tool delivery dates to the Operations Team, striving for on-time or early delivery.
- Manage tooling database (IQMS) for tracking tools, implementing planned scheduled maintenance or scheduled repairs.
- Develop customer tooling recommendations as needed for new tools or refurbishments.
- Set-up, track and maintain all tooling spare components.
- Ensure customer tooling assessments are managed and tracked.
- Provide technical support for Operations team, tool repairs and estimating.
- Ensure tool drawing files are updated as needed.
- Manage the tool cleaning group to ensure quality of work and adherence to schedules.
Job Qualifications
EXPERIENCE, SKILLS, EDUCATION AND TRAINING:
5 years of tool building experience. Excellent organizational, communication and computer skills. Demonstrates a sense of urgency. Knowledge of blueprint reading, Solidworks and Pro –e. Proficient at Geometric Tolerance interpretation.
WORK ENVIRONMENT AND PHYSICAL DEMANDS:
The noise level is usually low in the office setting and moderate to high in the manufacturing area.
