ROLE SUMMARY

The Mechanical Estimator will complete increasingly complex mechanical and field construction activities. This position will be responsible for collecting and assembling data, developing estimates and generating systems and bid analysis. All activities will be performed in support of the strategy, vision and values of JE Dunn.

ESTIMATOR FAMILY – CORE

• Completes entry level and routine mechanical and field construction activities.
• Learns how to develop budgetary M/E estimates, based upon program and schematic design information using automated M/E estimating system.
• Assists in the review of mechanical options as part of the preconstruction process and completes systems analysis for select projects.
• Learns to develop the mechanical scopes of work used to coordinate during the bid process.
• Assists in the completion of bid analysis and provides input during the subcontractor selection process.
• Assists in developing sequencing requirements of various systems and providing solutions to meet the schedule requirements.

Job Brief:

The primary function of the Estimator is to provide accurate bid proposals and scope analysis for potential projects. Additional estimator responsibilities will include quote review, project management, and material purchasing. The Estimator will prepare pricing estimates on new projects and estimate prices on change orders for existing contracts. He/she must exercise good judgment and have experience in working with purchasing, labor, equipment, and transportation costs. The Estimator I is a salaried, entry-level position that assists in preparing bid documents and cost estimates for electrical construction projects. The Estimator I has limited discretion to vary from established procedures when assembling construction costs by collecting and studying information to learn how to bid on a project. WHAT YOU’LL DO:

• Review proposal specifications and drawings to determine scope of work and required contents of estimate.

• Receives instructions from senior-level estimators to review proposal specifications and drawings to determine the scope of work and requirements.
• Using established procedures to prepare estimates by calculating the complete takeoff of the scope of work and entering them into the computer estimating system; review the estimate printout for accuracy and completeness.

About the Role

As an Estimator, you’ll play a key role in securing new work and supporting our operations team with accurate, thoughtful estimates. You’ll lead bids for public works and private development projects, and prepare estimates for self-perform scopes including grading, paving, wet utilities, and concrete. You’ll also contribute to general contracting opportunities across Design-Bid-Build, CMAR, and JOC delivery methods.

What You’ll Be Doing:

• Review project plans, requirements, and specifications to understand scope and develop accurate estimates.
• Prepare detailed quantity take-offs and pricing using self-perform production-based estimates or unit price estimating.
• Manage bid setups in HCSS HeavyJob software, ensuring all required documentation is included.
• Solicit and organize quotes from subcontractors and suppliers, ensuring accuracy and efficiency.
• Work closely with the estimating team to meet all deadlines and support each other in completing tasks.
• Train, mentor, and lead junior estimating staff, helping them develop their skills and achieve their best.
• Contribute to the development and implementation of estimating practices, guides, and tutorials to streamline processes.
• Participate in ongoing estimating training to enhance your skills and knowledge.

What You Bring

• A Bachelor’s degree in Construction Management, Engineering, Business, or a related field—or equivalent technical training and experience.
• A minimum of 3 years of heavy civil experience
• Familiarity with estimating software such as HCSS HeavyBid, On-Screen Takeoff, Agtek, or similar tools.
• Understanding of estimating techniques, cost control, subcontractor solicitation, and material specifications.
• Knowledge of municipal specifications and understanding of project delivery methods such as Design-Bid-Build, CMAR, and Job Order Contracts (JOC).
• Strong communication skills—both written and verbal—with strong attention to detail and accuracy.
• Strong organizational, time management, and problem-solving skills.

As an Estimator you're responsible for all estimating responsibilities on one or more construction projects for the duration of projects assigned; work with the project manager and project executive to achieve successful completion of projects; interface with current and prospective clients regarding cost and/or design issues.

• Act as the design phase coordinator during the schematic, design development, and construction documents phases of a project, including responsibility for completing all estimating tasks on schedule and in accordance with IC’s standards for quality and detail.
• Provide thorough, accurate and competitive bids for projects and estimates for project budget, including technical takeoffs, analysis of contract documents, cost analysis and communications with subcontractors.
• Develop selection of most economical systems to be utilized in preparation of bids, in conjunction with operations personnel.
• Ensure that all estimates, schedules, constructability reviews, value engineering efforts, cost report planning and purchase planning efforts and documents are prepared as scheduled.
• Review and develop a thorough understanding of all front-end contract documents and subcontractor contracts for rights and responsibilities under each and coordination of same.
• Administrate and monitor compliance with construction contracts with Owners, subcontractors and vendors during the schematic, design development and construction documents phases.
• Establish and/or identify for team use the criteria applicable to the project, e.g., wage rates, time frames, etc.
• Follow-up on and evaluation of status of the project.
• Perform constructability reviews.
• Plan construction sequence and site utilization in conjunction with project manager and team.
• Estimate general conditions and arrange for general conditions to be completed.
• Work with Marketing/Business Development on assigned projects to distribute information to bidders and review of bid responses to determine cost and scope.
• Participate in award of all subcontracts on assigned projects.

We are seeking a Chief Estimator to lead and strengthen our commercial electrical estimating department ensuring accuracy, profitability, and growth while mentoring & building a high performing team of Senior and Junior Estimators.

Position Summary

The Chief Estimator is responsible for overseeing all aspects of the estimating department from bid strategy and execution to personnel development and departmental KPIs. This role is both strategic and hands-on, providing leadership, guidance, and accountability to ensure consistent estimating practices that align with Davco’s operational goals and commitment to excellence.

The ideal candidate will bring strong technical expertise in commercial electrical estimating along with proven experience leading teams, developing process standards, business acumen, and building client relationships that drive long-term success.

Key Responsibilities

Department Leadership & Management

• Lead, mentor, and manage the estimating team, including Senior and Junior Estimators, fostering accountability, collaboration, and professional growth.
• Oversee department workload, ensuring accurate, timely, and competitive bid submissions.
• Establish, monitor, and report on Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) related to estimating accuracy, bid volume, win ratio, profitability, and others pertinent to leadership strategic decision making.
• Develop and maintain standardized estimating procedures, templates, and workflows to improve consistency and efficiency.
• Conduct performance reviews and training to continuously elevate the department’s skill level and efficiency.

Estimating Oversight & Strategy

• Review and approve detailed takeoffs and bids prepared by Senior Estimators, ensuring conformance with drawings, specifications, and company standards.
• Lead pre-bid and internal review meetings to evaluate project risk, scope gaps, and overall strategy.
• Collaborate with project management and operations to ensure smooth project turnover and alignment of budgeted values.
• Identify emerging market trends and develop pricing strategies to maintain competitiveness and profitability.
• Review and assist in negotiating contracts and scopes of work with clients and general contractors.
• Maintain relationships with vendors, clients, and subcontractors to ensure competitive pricing and reliable partnerships.

Relationship Development & Business Growth

• Foster, develop, and strengthen relationships with general contractors, developers, architects, engineers, and key decision-makers.
• Actively network and represent Davco at industry events, pre-bid meetings, and professional associations to generate new opportunities.

Financial & Departmental Accountability

• Evaluate project outcomes to identify estimating improvements and lessons learned.
• Provide leadership input on company pricing models, backlog forecasting, and long-term growth initiatives.
• Participate in executive strategy sessions to align estimating performance with overall corporate goals.

Qualifications

• 10+ years of electrical estimating experience, with at least 2 years in a supervisory or Chief Estimator role(preferred).
• Strong background in commercial electrical construction; experience with civil, municipal, or government projects (preferred).
• Proven leadership and mentoring skills with experience developing high-performing teams.
• Demonstrated ability to build and maintain client relationships that lead to repeat business and market growth.
• Proficiency in McCormick Estimating Software (preferred), Bluebeam, and Microsoft Office Suite.
• Strong understanding of NEC codes, construction methods, and bid administration.
• Data-driven mindset with the ability to develop and monitor KPIs.
• Excellent communication, negotiation, and organizational skills.
• Ability to manage multiple priorities in a deadline-driven environment.
• Willingness to travel to project sites and client meetings as needed.
