Job Summary

As a Non-CDL Truck Driver in our training program, you'll get paid while working toward your Commercial Driver's License (CDL). We cover all costs including tuition, permit and CDL test fees, and your time spent attending training. You'll start by preparing for and obtaining your Commercial Learner's Permit with our support. From there, you'll enter paid CDL training through our partnership with Class A Leasing, where you'll receive both classroom instruction and behind-the-wheel experience. Once you pass your CDL road test, you'll advance into our in-house driver training program to become a full-time CDL Driver on the Walters team.

This position is safety sensitive. It requires drug and alcohol testing in compliance with 49 CFR part 382, this includes marijuana. This position also requires an active DOT health card. To get a DOT health card, candidates must have a valid Minnesota Drivers License.

Responsibilities Prior to Obtaining CDL
  • Participate in employer-sponsored CDL permit preparation and study sessions
  • Successfully obtain a CDL Class B Permit within 30 days of hire
  • Attend classroom and behind-the-wheel training through our partner, Class A Leasing
  • Complete all required training milestones in preparation for the CDL road test
  • Maintain regular attendance, follow training schedules, and meet performance expectations
  • Perform general labor tasks as needed to support operations while in training (e.g., assisting drivers, yard work, basic equipment checks)
  • Participate in hands-on training for the various types of trucks and equipment used in our operations (e.g., rear-loaders, front-loaders, roll-offs), building the skills needed for safe and effective vehicle operation after CDL licensure
Primary Job Duties
  • Navigate commercial vehicles through congested residential areas, tight city streets, and confined suburban routes, demonstrating strong backing and maneuvering skills
  • Enter and exit the truck cab frequently to complete customer stops
  • Work up to the maximum hours allowed under DOT regulations, including weekends during holiday weeks as needed
  • Read and follow route maps and instructions and maintain accurate driver logs
  • Complete all required pre- and post-trip vehicle inspections
  • Operate safely and effectively in all weather conditions, including extreme heat, cold, rain, snow, and ice
  • During the off-season (typically DecemberApril), perform alternate duties as assigned, such as residential trash or recycling collection, assisting in the shop, working at the transfer station, or cross-training in other departments or vehicle types
CDL Class B Training Program
  • Walters pays for your CDL Class B training (up to $4,000) with Class A Leasing, paid as an interest-free loan that is forgiven if you work for Walters for at least 12 months after earning your Class B CDL.
  • Tiered repayment applies if you leave Walters within 12 months of earning your CDL as set forth in your Promissory Note.
  • Get your permit in 30 days and your CDL in 90 days of hire.

Education and Experience
  • Current state-issued Drivers License
  • Ability to obtain a class B CDL permit (without air brake restriction) within 30 days from hire date.
  • Ability to obtain a class B CDL (without air brake restriction) within 90 days from hire date.
  • Clean Driving Record
  • Mapping Skills
  • 18 years of age or older & legally authorized to work in the US.
  • High School Diploma or equivalent.
  • Ability to Pass a DOT Physical
Physical Requirements:
  • Ability to lift up to 50 lbs frequently and up to 100 lbs occasionally, bending, twisting, repetitive motion, and sitting for long periods of time
  • Ability to pass a pre-employment drug screen, DOT health evaluation, and physical assessment.
  • This is a safety-sensitive position subject to drug testing requirements in compliance with 49 CFR Part 382, this does include marijuana testing.
