Day to Day:

The Advanced Aortic Imaging for Clinical and Translational Research (AAI-CTR) lab at UW–Madison is hiring a Postdoctoral Research Associate to develop and validate next-generation imaging biomarkers for aortic disease. If you want your algorithms to change how patients are monitored and treated, not just generate papers (although there is plenty of that too), this is the role.
Why This Lab:
Our group has built several image analysis techniques that have completely changed how we view aortic disease. Specifically, vascular deformation mapping (VDM) is a technique that detects aortic deformation patterns invisible to conventional diameter measurement, and we are actively translating it from research tool to clinical product. Our work sits at the intersection of deep learning, image registration, and clinical decision-making, with active industry partnerships aimed at commercializing the methods we develop. Former trainees have moved into competitive industry positions, co-developed new IP, and gone on to train at other top-tier programs. This is a lab where technical innovation and clinical impact are not separate goals.
What You’ll Do:
Algorithm & Pipeline Development
- Design, train, and validate DL/ML models for aortic CT and MRI (segmentation, registration, shape/growth modeling, VDM pipelines).
- Build and optimize image-based pipelines for longitudinal aortic surveillance using large, multi-center datasets.
- Benchmark algorithms against clinical reference standards; lead external validation and reproducibility testing.
Clinical Translation
- Collaborate directly with cardiovascular surgeons, cardiologists, and radiologists to define clinically meaningful performance targets.
- Advance investigational tools toward real-world use: workflow integration, reliability testing, and documentation aligned with regulatory and commercial pathways.
- Apply novel analysis methods to large patient populations (UW and multi-center cohorts) to generate evidence that supports clinical adoption.
Data & Project Leadership
- Curate, organize, and manage large clinical imaging datasets and associated outcomes data.
- Mentor and collaborate with trainees across clinical, engineering, and physics backgrounds.
- Lead manuscript preparation, conference abstracts, and presentations; build your independent publication record.
Required Qualifications
- Ph.D. (or equivalent) in Biomedical Engineering, Electrical/Computer Engineering, Computer Science, Medical Physics, or a closely related quantitative field.
- Hands-on experience with medical image analysis on CT and/or MRI.

Commitment & Environment
We are looking for someone who can commit to at least 18–24 months. Meaningful translational research takes time: developing a method, validating it rigorously, and publishing the results is not a short-term endeavor. In return, you will work in a highly collaborative environment spanning Radiology, Surgery, Cardiology, and Medical Physics at UW–Madison, with direct access to large clinical datasets and a PI who is invested in your long-term career trajectory.

The compensation model varies depending upon the course delivery format. For a synchronous Live Online course, a reasonable estimate for this position is $3,000 -$4,000 total per course. For an asynchronous Start Anytime Online course, this position is paid $165 per final student course grade submitted each month; a reasonable estimate ranges from $660 - $21,285 total per course; and monthly payments typically begin within 6 months after the course start date. Instructor compensation is determined by course length, number of units, enrollment, budgetary considerations, and other factors.

Part-time by agreement on a course-by-course basis.

General Duties
The department seeks candidates who can support the success of all students through inclusive curriculum, classroom environment, and pedagogy. Job Summary(2-4 Years):
We are seeking a highly skilled and motivated Software Engineer to join our specialized engineering team. This role is centered on the development of sophisticated software for advanced hardware control and lab automation, with a primary focus on aero-acoustic wind tunnel systems. In this role, you will use Python to design, build, and enhance control mechanisms for both a classic recirculating wind tunnel and a Client modular fan-array wind tunnel. This position offers a unique and exciting opportunity to work at the intersection of software development, robotics, acoustics, and aerodynamics.
Key Responsibilities:
- Design, develop, and maintain high-quality, reusable, and reliable Python code for controlling complex hardware systems, including wind tunnel fan arrays and associated mechanical components.
- Implement and optimize control algorithms for real-time performance and precision, including PWM control for fan motors and actuators.
- Develop software to program and generate a variety of airflow conditions, including laminar, turbulent, gradient, and time-varying flows.
- Create and manage control interfaces for secondary systems, including robotic HATS (Head and Torso Simulator) movers, lift systems, and multi-channel spatial audio (HOA) setups.
- Integrate data from motion capture systems (e.g., Optitrack) for real-time tracking and system alignment.
- Develop and execute automated procedures for the calibration of wind speeds, acoustic sensors, and other critical measurements.
- Build and maintain data pipelines for capturing, processing, and analyzing experimental data from a wide range of sensors.
- Troubleshoot and resolve complex software and system-level issues to ensure high availability and reliability of all lab equipment.

Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Robotics, or a related field.
- Proven professional experience in Python programming with a strong emphasis on hardware control, lab automation, or robotics.
- Solid understanding of control systems theory, digital signal processing, and data acquisition principles.
