Summary:
This position requires the skills and knowledge to provide direction, leadership, and accountability for Medical Assistants. Under general supervision, performs a wide variety of direct, technical nursing care functions for acute, sub-acute, convalescent and chronic patients in accordance with nursing care plans and physicians' orders. Referral Coordinator who is responsible for coordinating all patient referrals and processes all requests for referral authorizations. Must be able to work cooperatively as a team member and demonstrate behaviors of trust and respect toward others, including clinical support associates, non-clinical support associates, resident/faculty physicians, hospital associates, and management.
Responsibilities:
Identify routine, urgent, or emergency situations and follow procedures related to scheduling and obtaining proper referral/authorization for treatment.
Greet all patients as they arrive in a friendly, courteous, and professional manner;
Demonstrate and maintain a working knowledge of customer service principles and departmental expectations regarding customer service. Show concern for patient problems and ensure the comfort of the patient while waiting to be registered or seen by the provider. Document in the computer system all necessary demographic, insurance, and financial information. Compile or retrieve scheduled reports from the computer system.
Assist physicians by preparing patients for an examination/treatment/procedure, assessing the patient's condition by documenting the patient's history, vital signs, chief complaints, etc. Procedures may include, but are not limited to, EKG, stress tests, casting, cast removal, suturing, Point of Care Testing, etc. Performing care coordination activities with patients, including but not limited to chronic care management and transitional care management services.
Expedites the flow of authorization requests through the Managed Care System. Prepares requests for authorization of services by ensuring form completion, eligibility, verification, benefits, etc. Accurately enter referral information into the computer system with a thorough understanding of the correct system codes (type, status, procedure, etc). Performs care coordination activities, which include but are not limited to notifying patients and providers of authorization decisions and maintaining accurate tracking of services, including follow-through on the status of referrals. Coordinate the initiation of specific home health services, DME services, diagnostics, etc.
Administer specified medication (orally, intradermal, subcutaneous, or intramuscular injection) and note time and amount in patient's chart. Observe each patient and report adverse reactions to medication or treatment to the medical personnel in charge.
Dress wounds, apply compresses, ice bags, and hot water bottles. Assemble and use such equipment as catheters and oxygen suppliers.
Collect samples such as urine and sputum from patients for testing. Perform routine laboratory tests on samples.
Sterilize equipment and supplies by following clinic policy. Maintains the cleanliness of the facility, exam rooms, and instrumentation per practice and OSHA policies. Prepare exam rooms with the necessary instruments.
Order supplies per clinical standards.
Document all incidents according to mandated rules and regulations and properly dispose of contaminated and disposable items.
Lead the Medical Assistants in each clinic in improving patient flow. Monitor workflow to ensure efficiency and timeliness. Initiate staffing changes and direct work tasks as necessary to manage fluctuating volumes.
Demonstrates competence to perform assigned responsibilities in a manner that meets the age-specific and developmental needs of members served by the department.
Appropriately adapts to assigned assessment, treatment, and/or service methods to accommodate the unique physical, psychosocial, cultural, age-specific and other developmental needs of each member served.

Reports to Manager of Emergency Department. The Emergency Department Paramedic is a proactive member of an interdisciplinary team of licensed and unlicensed care givers who ensure that patients, families and significant others receive individualized high quality, safe patient care. They practice in a clinical environment that is administered by Nurse Managers and other leaders.
As an integral member of the Emergency Department team the Paramedic will support treatment in the hospital emergency department (ED). The paramedic will be required to assist with patient care treatment at the direction of the physician and/or the Registered Professional Nurse (RN) that directs plan of care, team goals, and performance. The paramedic shall cover the range of services provided in a medical treatment facility in accordance with O.C.G.A. 31-11-59 which outlines the services of paramedics in hospitals and defined hospital specific duties. In addition, the paramedic promotes and restores patients' health and the overall patient experience by collaborating with physicians, RNs, and multi-disciplinary team members, and providing support to patients, families and significant others. The ED Medical Director oversees the scope of practice of the paramedic in the ED in accordance with the Georgia Paramedic Scope of Practice and the Wellstar Paramedic Scope of Practice.
It is expected that all Emergency Department Paramedics possess a Georgia paramedic license and the national registry certification for paramedics. The paramedic must be knowledgeable and adhere to the scope of paramedic practices as outlined in the Georgia Department of Human Resources Division of Public Health Office of Emergency Medical Services scope of practices. As a member of the patient services team, it is expected that the individual upholds the voice of the patient, system policies and procedures while supporting service excellence goals.
Core Responsibilities and Essential Functions:
Patient Care
- Assists medical and nursing staff with the care and treatment of Emergency patients
- Assists in the intake process by greeting and interviewing patients and inputting pertinent medical information into the computer system.

Uses effective written and oral communication skills with patients, staff, physicians, family and visitors, i.e. AIDET (Acknowledge, Introduce, Duration, Explain, Thank you).
Uses safety communication techniques, i.e. Ask a question, Request a change, Voice a concern, Use chain of command when necessary (ARRC).
Communicates completion of assignment/duties to RN or Charge Nurse.
Documents completion of patient care in EMR (Electronic Medical Record).
Communicates patient care concerns/problems/emergencies to the RN or Charge Nurse in a timely manner. Real time communication is required.
Uses positive and respectful communication with all members of healthcare team, patients and families.
Maintains equipment i.e. blood pressure machines, glucometers, and other patient care equipment. When devices are not properly working sequester, tag, and report to appropriate personnel.
Communicates with patient and updates white boards with information.
Knowledgeable, maintains, and acts as unit expert regarding patient care documentation tools related to their role in the event of downtime.
Safety and Infection Control
Provides a safe environment for the provision of patient care.
Consistent use of proper hand hygiene.
Keeps patient rooms and unit areas clean and free of clutter.
Follows appropriate PPE/Infection control policies in between patient care and equipment usage.
Reinforces the importance of universal precautions with patient and patients family.
Utilizes proper body mechanics, patient safe handling devices (i.e. lifts, transfer equipment, etc.), and additional assistive devices (i.e. walkers, gait belts).
Performs environment of care rounds.
Performs other duties as assigned
Complies with all Wellstar Health System policies, standards of work, and code of conduct.
Required Minimum Education:
- Rising Senior in Good Standing Other or High School Diploma General-Preferred or GED General-Preferred

Position Purpose:
Our Physical Therapy Assistants, PTA, provide physical therapy services to Mt. Carmel patients under the guidance and supervision of a Physical Therapist and following a written plan of care established by the physician and physical therapist. Our PTAs assist in assessing our patients’ need for physical therapy devices and interventions and instructs our patients and their family members in the use and care of therapeutic appliances and devices, such as wheelchairs, braces, etc.

Minimum Qualifications:
- Graduation from a two-year college-level program approved by the American Physical Therapy Association.
- Minimum of six months experience under a qualified Physical Therapist.
- Home health experience preferred.
- Must be able to function in a practice environment with minimal direct supervision, accepting personal responsibility for maintaining a professional relationship with the agency’s clients and their families.
- Must accept responsibility for maintaining clinical practice skills learning and adhering to agency’s policies and procedures on an on-going basis.
