Currently seeking a Coatings Application Scientist supporting the Applications Development Team. As a Coatings Application Scientist, you will support the innovation in the Paint, Coatings, Adhesives, & Sealants markets through formulation design, evaluation, and engagement with paint and coatings customers.

The successful candidate will have the following Key Accountabilities:

• Identify emerging trends, unmet market needs, and novel opportunities where minerals can create new performance or cost advantages
• Design, execute, and analyze laboratory experiments to evaluate mineral functionality in various coating systems
• Develop prototype products and technical proof-of-concepts demonstrating the value of mineral-based solutions
• Lead the on-going maintenance of the coatings laboratory to support coatings formulation applications
• Conduct the coatings laboratory projects supporting new product development and commercial growth. Develop technical value propositions. Translate voice of customers (VOC) into key performance attributes. Design and conduct experiments to demonstrate and quantify functional and performance benefits using customer language.
• Interface with the technology platform, corporate analytical laboratory, and pilot staff to ensure seamless technology transfer and scale-up.
• Support coatings technical product commercialization, assisting in the creation of technical data sheets, brochures, and new product launch packages
• Support within a cross-functional team to develop IP strategy in the coatings space. Conduct annual coatings IP landscape study, stay up to date to competitive IP.
• Coordinate comparative testing & evaluation of competitive products in the coatings markets.
• Supervise lab technicians.
• Provide training and technical assistance to Sales, Operations, Marketing and other Covia affiliated employees involved in supplying and servicing the coatings markets. Serve as a resource for customer problem resolving and technical support.
• Represent the organization in forums and conferences within specific area of application expertise.

The successful candidate will have the following Minimum Qualifications:

• Bachelor’s degree in chemistry or chemical engineering with 10 years’ experience in the relevant industry, or Master /Ph. D degree with 5 years of industrial experience
• Experience in resin systems and formulations with pigments, fillers, curing agents, activators
• Experience in various paint and coating systems, including architectural interior, exterior coatings, industrial coatings, and specialty applications such as solar reflection coatings.
• Laboratory experience with chemicals, MSDS, ventilation and safety training
• Hands-on ability to execute analytical / laboratory procedures and maintain applicable equipment / systems
• Deep knowledge of coating formulations with a structured methodology for building, optimizing, and testing coating formulations is preferred
• Experience with Critical to Quality (CTQ) process is preferred

The Food Scientist II reports directly to the Research & Technical Development Lead and plays a critical role in advancing technical platforms, ingredient research, and process feasibility for snack and confectionery products. This role is responsible for developing scalable scientific solutions that support the company’s innovation pipeline. The position focuses on early-stage formulation science, functionality modeling, and technical risk mitigation prior to commercialization handoff.

The Food Scientist operates within the Technical & Research Team and collaborates closely with the Product Development & Commercialization Team during scale-up and launch readiness phases.

Key Responsibilities:

1. Technical Platform Development

· Support the Research & Technical Development Lead in building and optimizing core technology platforms (e.g., probiotic systems, fiber enriched system, sugar reduction system, hydrocolloid systems, protein enhanced system).

· Conduct ingredient functionality studies to understand structure-function relationships.

· Develop reusable technical frameworks that enable multiple pipeline products.

2. Advanced Formulation Science

· Design and optimize complex formulations for snack and confectionery applications.

· Investigate texture stability, moisture migration, hydrolysis risks, glass transition behavior, and shelf-life quality indicator.

· Conduct structured root cause analysis for technical performance issues.

· Translate scientific findings into scalable formulation strategies.

3. Process Feasibility & Risk Mitigation

· Evaluate processing parameters (e.g., heating time, vacuum, Brix, pH, Aw) to ensure technical robustness.

· Identify potential scalability constraints early in development.

· Support pilot-scale validation and collaborate with commercialization teams as needed.

4. Stability Prediction

· Design preliminary accelerated and real-time stability studies.

· Establish quality benchmarks for texture, moisture, color, and API ingredients.

5. Cross-Functional Collaboration

· Partner with Product Development during transition from research to commercialization.

· Provide technical input to embedded analytical and compliance resources.

· Support supplier technical assessments and ingredient validation.

6. Documentation & Technical Governance

· Maintain accurate and complete formulation documentation in designated systems.

· Develop detailed technical reports and risk assessments for internal review.

Qualifications:

· Master’s degree in Food Science, Food Engineering, Chemistry, or related field.

· 2–4+ years of experience in snack and/or confectionery and/or gummy and/or bars of R&D.

· Strong knowledge of hydrocolloids, fiber systems, sugar reduction systems, and moisture control mechanisms.

Manages a team of chemists/scientists/technicians and executes pressure sensitive adhesive (PSA) tape prototype development, scale-up, and product launch in various applications. The group leader will focus on platform technology development, new product development for customer-driven projects, as well as continuous improvement and cost reduction of existing products and processes. Emphasis on acrylic polymer synthesis, silicone and rubber adhesive formulations, PSA rheology, knowledge of tape assemblies, backing material selection, and release liner familiarity. Works with customers and AR teams to collect design input and develop new product design strategies. Technical and laboratory lead in developing new adhesive solutions, robust products, and basic production processes that can be successfully commercialized.

Essential Functions:

• Establishes and directs research programs for new product development and product/process improvement of current products. Responsible for complex basic research and/or product development projects.
• Leads lab personnel and facilitates development of product constructions and processes; designs & conducts chemical experiments on both lab- and production-scale; designs and specifies production scale processes and contributes to product validation.
• Conducts and directs required laboratory work to develop new PSA and tape assemblies including polymerization, formulation, coating and testing. Develops new products that lead to sustainable commercial revenue.
• Completes any necessary regulatory forms. Ensures team follows similar protocols and procedures.
• Implements and executes product development to align with Stage Gate timelines and sets prioritization with the Director of Innovation and Product Management team. Meets technical commitments in order to complete project progression dates and milestones on time.
• Drives patent strategy (reading, planning, and execution) within the team to align with goals established by the Director of Innovation.

Job Specifications:

• BS degree (or higher) in chemistry, chemical engineering, polymer science or materials science and/or significant industrial experience. Ph.D. degree preferred but not required.
• Greater than 3 years adhesive formulation, mixing process and coating process experience. Demonstrates detailed knowledge of required chemical and physical test methods for PSA characterization. Requires an aptitude to use sensitive test equipment.
• Basic understanding and familiarity with adhesive chemistries and coating technologies. Familiarity and understanding of various adhesive chemistries (acrylic, silicone, rubber).
• Understanding of adhesive tape constructions (backing materials, release liner selection, adhesive chemistries, etc.)
• Knowledge of PSA rheology, dynamic mechanical analysis, and other physical polymer characterization methods
• Supervisory experience preferred with experience managing a team of scientists in product development, technology platform expansion, and patent filing.
• Demonstrated technology and/or product development capability.
• Expertise required in Stage Gate processes and how to move projects through the pipeline with discipline, efficiency, and accountability

The Process Chemist designs, develops, optimizes, and scales chemical processes for the pilot to large-scale manufacturing of intermediate and finished products. The Process Chemist leverages their expertise in ensuring that chemical processes are developed so that the chemical reaction(s) is carried out efficiently, safely, and economically, and are within quality and regulatory compliance. By staying current with scientific literature and collaborating across teams, they drive innovation and efficiency. This role involves supporting IP development, maintaining safety standards, and contributing significantly to the team's success in achieving company goals.

Responsibilities

• Designing, developing, and optimizing chemical processes to improve efficiency, yield, and product quality.

• Ability to use analytical instrumentation (HPLC, GC-MS, DSC, pH meter, etc).
• Ability to operate pilot to large-scale chemistry equipment (chemical reactors, pumps, distillation equipment, etc).
• Strong analytical and troubleshooting skills.
• Ability to conduct literature searches for specific target molecules and reactions; ability to use the literature to design efficient synthetic routes, as well as troubleshoot problematic reactions.

Compensation

The salary range for this role is $75,000-$90,000.
