Nuclear Safety Basis Analyst

- Candidates must have prior Unreviewed Safety Question (USQ) experience supporting nuclear facilities—applications without this will not be considered.
- Must be willing and able to relocate to the Los Alamos, NM area and work a hybrid schedule with onsite requirements.
- Must meet minimum education and experience requirements (Bachelor’s in Engineering/Science + 8 years of relevant experience or equivalent).
Impact
As a Safety Basis Analyst 3, you will play a key role in ensuring the safe operation of nuclear and non-nuclear facilities at LANL, specifically supporting USQ efforts at TA-55. This position directly contributes to maintaining safety compliance during a period of increased operational tempo, supporting critical national security missions through hazard analysis, safety documentation, and risk mitigation.
Responsibilities and Duties
- Perform nuclear and non-nuclear hazard and risk analyses to ensure safe facility operations
- Conduct hazard identification, hazard analysis, and facility hazard categorization
- Perform accident analysis and support selection of safety controls
- Develop and maintain safety basis documentation including:
- Unreviewed Safety Question (USQ) determinations
- Documented Safety Analysis (DSA)
- Technical Safety Requirements (TSRs)
- Safety Assessment Documents
- Facility Safety Plans and Safety Analysis Reports
- Support increased workload demands related to PF4/TA-55 operations
- Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams in secure environments
- Support qualification process and task-based assignments
- Work flexible schedules including potential weekends and overtime
Minimum Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Engineering or Science with minimum 8 years of related experience, or equivalent combination of education and experience
- Demonstrated experience in safety basis development and hazard analysis
- Direct experience with USQ processes in nuclear facilities
- Ability to obtain a Q Clearance
- Ability to work onsite as required in a hybrid environment
- Willingness to support flexible schedules, including weekends and overtime
- Ability to obtain unescorted and A-level access
Desired Skills
- Strong background in nuclear facility safety basis work
- In-depth knowledge of USQ processes and requirements
- Experience working in high-hazard or nuclear environments (e.g., TA-55, PF4)

Salary range:
A reasonable estimate for this position is approx. $5,700 per course. Compensation is through a fixed amount associated with the number of units and/or length of course and the Teacher of Special Program's role (Facilitator or Co-Facilitator) within the support program.
Percent time:
Assignments are typically one course per academic year.
Anticipated start:
This is a pool recruitment that will be used to fill positions that may open up during the 2025/2026 academic year. Hiring may take place at any time based upon program needs.
Position duration:
Appointment is for one year with the possibility for reappointment based on program need, funding availability and meritorious performance.

Position description
The Berkeley School of Education (BSE) at the University of California, seeks qualified temporary non-tenure track, part-time Facilitators or Co-Facilitators (Teacher - Special Programs or TSP) to provide support through the The National Board Resource Center (NBRC) at UC Berkeley for teachers seeking National Board Certification; a project of the Center for Research on Expanding Educational Opportunity (CREEO). The NBRC is designed to support teachers who serve in high need schools as identified by the State of California and in particular teachers who represent the student populations in those schools.
Facilitator Responsibilities: We are seeking outstanding instructors (TSPs) who are Nationally Board Certified and understand the processes and rigor of earning this certification. Final format (hybrid: online and in person) will be developed in collaboration with the Nevada National Board Support Center.
Individuals who qualify to facilitate or co-Facilitate will have support and training to facilitate one or all of the National Board Components:
- Component 1: Content Knowledge

- Component 3: Teaching Practice and Learning Environment
- Component 4: Effective and Reflective Practitioner

Facilitators will ultimately become the designers and providers of support through the The National Board Resource Center at UC Berkeley under the direction of the Director of CREEO.

The Role
This position is for job seekers with no trades experience willing to complete three weeks of unpaid training in the Outside Machinist trade.
Newport News Shipbuilding has partnered with the Virginia Ship Repair Association and local Virginia community colleges and maritime training facilities to offer several course-to-hire Marine Trades Training (MTT) programs for individuals interested in learning a trade and working full-time for Newport News Shipbuilding. Courses are offered once a month with 8-10 students per class. The Machinist Trainee program is offered at Camp Community College (Suffolk, VA). This (UNPAID) program is 3-weeks (120 hours), 7:00am - 3:30pm (Monday thru Friday).
To learn more about the Marine Trades Training (MTT) programs and how the process works, please visit: machinists are responsible for installing, maintaining, testing, and repairing a ship's major mechanical components and systems. Their work takes place on naval vessels at various stages of new construction, overhaul, or repair. Key components involved may include steam turbines, reduction gears, propellers, reactor components, catapults, weapons systems, periscopes, as well as laundry, food service, and refrigeration equipment.
Outside machinists utilize a wide variety of tools and machinery, from basic hand tools like wrenches and screwdrivers to advanced equipment such as torque wrenches, micrometers, drill presses, optical instruments, mills, portable machines, boring equipment, precision grinders, and lathes.
Working at Newport News Shipbuilding often involves performing tasks in various weather conditions, at extreme heights on scaffolding, ladders, or elevated platforms and in small, confined spaces such as tanks, compartments, or voids in a ship. These environments require a strong focus on safety, precision, and adaptability, as well as physical agility and comfort working in challenging conditions.
