Position description

The Department of Music at the University of California, Berkeley invites applications for a pool of qualified temporary, part-time instructors to teach a range of instruments for one-on-one and/or group instruction. Teachers of Special Programs are hired as needs arise during the fall, spring and/or summer.



The majority of Teachers Special Programs positions are part of our private instruction program. It is a directed program of study, open mostly to music majors, by audition, which includes opportunities for large and small music ensembles, and private instruction. The student's program will be worked out in consultation with the supervising faculty, who will assist in finding an appropriate private instructor. The components of the private instruction program include providing lessons in the following areas:



* Instrumental Performance

* Jazz Performance

* Vocal Performance

* Basic Voice

* Vocal Technique

* Basic Piano for intending and current music majors

* Beginning Piano for Non-Music Majors

* Advanced Beginning Piano for Non-Music Majors



Other courses Teachers Special Programs may serve:

* Chorus and/or Chamber Chorus

* Early Music Performance

* Songs and Song-Writing

* Various Musical Practices Performance - Non-Western Instruments



Further positions include instruction on non-Western instruments in our Ethnomusicology labs, such as Music of Japan, Music of East Asia, Music of the Caribbean, Music of Bali, etc.

Position description

The Jacobs Institute for Design Innovation in the College of Engineering at the University of California, Berkeley, is seeking qualified temporary instructors to teach undergraduate courses, graduate courses, and/or special topics workshops should an opening arise in the Fall and Spring semesters, or for the Summer term. Applicants should accurately list their specializations so they can be properly evaluated as course needs arise; the existence of this pool does not guarantee that a position is available.



Lecturers supervise student design projects, give lectures, prepare assignments and project topics & deliverables, hold regular office hours, prepare exams or hold reviews, give design advice, and submit final grades.



In addition to lecturers, we also seek Teacher Special Programs (TSP) instructors, should an opening arise. The TSP's principal responsibilities can range from teaching a short course, providing a lecturer with industry expertise, participating in design critiques during a course, teaching at Jacobs Institute boot camps or workshops, or contributing to major curriculum development.

Civic Engagement

Communications

Responsibilities include informing the media about Islamic activities and practices, monitoring the local media, writing editorials, and assisting in issuing the CAIR-California newsletter. Interns will develop their skills for writing in a journalistic style. Interns will also learn how to effectively engage the community through social media and be responsible for creating posts, updates, tweets, and more to promote and enhance CAIR-SFBA's image through said mediums. They will also learn how the media works and how to develop press releases and media packets. An interest in media and communications is desirable.

Event Planning/Outreach

Responsibilities include organizing events sponsored by CAIR (such as the Muslim Day at the Capitol), proposing and creating new material to promote CAIR, preparing an exhibit, and helping with inquiries from members and guests. Other responsibilities may include acting as a liaison between CAIR and the local Muslim and non-Muslim communities, organizing outreach programs with Islamic centers, and developing and implementing strategies to attract individuals to become involved with CAIR. An interest in marketing, public relations, and graphic design is desirable.

Operations

Responsibilities include working closely with the Operations Manager to maintain office productivity. Interns will assist with daily operations, such as coordination of staff meetings, trainings, and activities; greeting guests and interacting with patrons; and assisting with office organization projects. The internship also includes a membership component with responsibilities such as donor and community outreach, development of membership programs, and more.

Youth Development

Responsibilities include implementing CAIR's youth programming, which engages high school and college students around issues of identity, leadership development, civil rights, civic engagement, and social justice. Programs include:

SUMMARY PURPOSE OF POSITION: Grant -Funded Integral position for a U.S. Department of Education funded Upward Bound Program Trio grant. This position is contingent upon grant funding. Develops implements and coordinates a student assessment system and plan of action to strengthen the students' academic skills, particularly in the areas of weakness identified through the assessment system. Evaluates all students periodically and documents their progress (using individual educational plans, IEP's) and maintains systematic records and produces reports on the program's academic support and instructional activities (both summer and academic year components). The Upward Bound Program works individually and in groups with educationally, economically and/or socially disadvantaged high school students to equip them with the skills and motivation necessary to successfully complete high school and be accepted into a post-secondary institution of higher education.


EXAMPLES OF PRIMARY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:



  • Plans and implements academic tutoring and mentoring to meet the individual needs of the program's students for the academic year component.
  • Trains and supervises six- eight part-time tutor/mentors and one part time Master Tutor
