SUMMARY/ OBJECTIVE
The Metallurgist is a key factory staff member responsible for analyzing raw materials and finished products, overseeing and monitoring heat treatment and metal finishing processes, working closely with cross-functional teams to select proper alloys for specific applications, identifying metallurgical defects and implementing corrective actions to meet quality, safety, and performance standards.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES
- Analyze the physical, chemical, and mechanical properties of metals and alloys
- Perform metallurgical testing, including microstructural analysis and failure investigations
- Investigate and resolve metallurgical defects (cracking, porosity, distortion, corrosion, wear) and recommend course of action
- Recommend material selections based on performance, cost, and application requirements
- Support quality control and continuous improvement initiatives
- Collaborate with engineering, production, and R&D teams
- Prepare technical reports, documentation, and presentations

- Able to back-gouge using carbon-air-arc or plasma for full penetration welds
- Clean and polish welds to company design specifications

- Works from drawings/sketches to determine weld size, weld location and weld process
- Inspects own work to ensure compliance to drawings and weld procedures and makes necessary repairs
- Assist with incoming parts inspection and final product inspection and complete appropriate documentation
- Operate Fork trucks, jib cranes and overhead crane
- Assist in other areas of the plant as assigned

Position Responsibilities:
Obtain work package from the ready-to-work rack, work board, or assigned by Team Lead, or run previously set-up jobs by reviewing tie-ins from prior operators.
Operate a computer to access information from prints, sketches, drawings, layout documents, and Boeing (BAC) specifications.
Perform safety checks on machines, ensuring the area is clear of obstacles, power switches are off, and safety guards are installed.
Move heavy materials, equipment, tools, and dies to the work area using stackers, Kalamar, die loaders, or overhead cranes, asking for assistance as needed.
Check steam lines for cracks or cuts and verify o-rings are properly seated prior to hookup.
Preheat dies and punches using electricity or steam, and verify temperature accuracy for hot dies with a temperature stick or pyrometer.
Determine machine setup by reviewing work orders, tooling usage instructions, and die setup charts, making adjustments as required.
Load and secure dies into the press, checking for defects and torquing as necessary.
Examine tools, dies, and fixtures for damage, separating them using appropriate handling procedures.
Set up press cycle programs using control panels or manual switches to adjust height, stroke, pressure, and cycle time.
Develop patterns when necessary, cutting and tailoring materials like fiberglass and graphite to die requirements.
Perform pull-outs on various types of metal and alloy tubes using a hydraulic tube pull-out machine.
Verify that materials are free from burrs and debris, using hand deburring tools and denatured alcohol prior to forming operations.
Consult with Team Lead and other personnel (e.g., engineering, planning, inspection) on process or job-related issues as required.

RESPONSIBILITIES
- Lead engineering design of custom bulk material handling systems including transfer chutes, towers, supports, and liners
- Apply DEM software and simulation data to enhance material flow and reduce wear
- Create detailed design packages including 3D models, BOMs, stress calculations, and manufacturing notes
- Specify structural reinforcements, wear-resistant materials, and overlay/fabrication techniques
- Interface with CNC, plasma cutting, forming, and welding processes to ensure manufacturability

QMS ownership & documentation
- Maintain and improve the Quality Management System (ISO 13485 & AS9100)
- Own document control: procedures, forms, records, revision history, approvals, and training linkage
- Write and maintain SOPs and Work Instructions (WI) that are usable on the shop floor
- Build/maintain templates and βquality infrastructureβ (CAPA, NCR, MRB, supplier scorecards, audit checklists, etc.) so quality work is repeatable and fast
- Maintain and execute quality control plans and inspection procedures (incoming, in-process, final)
- Review and approve production travelers/routers, inspection reports, and batch records for completeness and compliance
- Support measurement and inspection activity as needed (hands-on), including working with GD&T intent and drawing requirements
- Own calibration control and measurement system discipline (gage control, basic MSA/Gage R&R where appropriate)
- Lead nonconformance containment, disposition (MRB), and corrective/preventive action
- Drive root cause analysis using structured methods (5-Why, fishbone, etc.)
- Use data (scrap, rework, yield, escapes, supplier defects) to prioritize improvements and prevent recurrence
- Audits, suppliers, and external requirements
- Plan and lead internal audits; coordinate/support customer and certification audits
- Own supplier quality activities: supplier evaluations, incoming inspection strategy, supplier corrective actions, and performance tracking
- Partner with engineering and operations to ensure purchasing controls and material traceability meet customer and regulatory requirements
- Lead/coordinate validation activities such as IQ/OQ/PQ and process/product qualification, ensuring documentation traceability and clear acceptance criteria
- Support transition from development work into repeatable production (control plans, risk reviews, inspection plans, recordkeeping)
- Collaborate daily with production, engineering, and program leadership to solve problems and improve execution
- Various other tasks as required in a small business
- Engineering degree preferred or equivalent industry experience
- 7+ years in manufacturing quality engineering with direct responsibility for process performance improvement
- Demonstrated track record of reducing defect rates, scrap, or variation through statistical and engineering-based methods
- Advanced root cause analysis experience involving complex, multi-variable manufacturing processes
- Proficiency in statistical tools (SPC, DOE, regression analysis, Cp/Cpk analysis) with hands-on software experience (Minitab, JMP, or equivalent)
- Experience implementing sustainable corrective actions that changed process capability (not temporary containment measures)
- Prior experience working in a regulated/certified quality system (ISO 13485 and/or AS9100 experience strongly preferred)
- Demonstrated ability to create and maintain clear procedures, records, and traceability
- Adeptness to operate hands-on in a production environment and communicate effectively with engineers and technicians

Minimum Qualifications:
