Position Summary

Under the direction of the Coding and Clinical Documentation Improvement Manager, reviews clinical documentation and diagnostic results, as appropriate, to extract data and apply appropriate ICD-10-CM, CPT, and/or HCPCS codes and modifiers to outpatient encounters for reimbursement and statistical purposes. Communicates with physicians, Physician Advisor or other hospital team members as needed to obtain optimal documentation to meet coding and compliance standards. Standard Work Duties: Coder II - Outpatient

  • Assigns and sequences diagnostic and procedural codes using appropriate classification systems utilizing official coding guidelines. Seeks clarification from healthcare providers or other designated resources to ensure accurate and complete coding
  • Abstracts and enters coded data as well as correct surgeon, anesthesiologist and procedure date. Assures appropriate information such as pathology and operative reports are present in the medical record prior to final coding for coding accuracy and appropriate APC assignment.
  • Maintains appropriate level of coding and abstracting productivity and quality for outpatient diagnostic, Emergency Department, Family Health Center, ambulatory surgeries, observations, and other recurring services as per established minimum per hour requirement.
  • Demonstrates competence in coding and abstracting requirements by maintaining less than 5% error rate for all ICD-10-CM and/or PCS, CPT, and HCPCS codes and modifiers.
  • Continuously reviews changes in coding rules and regulations including in Coding Clinic, CPT Assistant, CMS, and other payer guidelines.
  • Prioritizes coding functions as directed by the Manager, and organizes job functions and work assignments to efficiently complete tasks within the established time frames.

Education
  • Associate's degree in Nursing required
  • Bachelor's degree in Nursing preferred
  • If prepared at the associate degree in nursing level required to enroll in a BSN program within 12 months of hire date and completion within 4 years of hire date.
Experience
  • Prior clinical nursing experience preferred
Licenses and Certifications
  • RN - Registered Nurse - State Licensure and/or Compact State Licensure in the District of Columbia required
  • CPR - Cardiac Pulmonary Resuscitation (includes BLS and NRP) for healthcare providers from either the American Heart Association (AHA) or American Red Cross within 90 Days required
  • Additional unit/specialty certifications may vary by department or business unit.
  • C-EFM - Electronic Fetal Monitoring from the National Certification Corporation (NCC) is required for Perinatal nurses (labor and delivery antepartum antenatal testing) within 12 months from date of hire. New graduate nurses or new to specialty nurses (labor and delivery antepartum antenatal testing) will have 15 months from date of hire to obtain the EFM certification.

Overview: The cardiothoracic-vascular Perioperative Registered Nurse (RN) provides nursing care to patients in select phases of Perioperative care (as competency demonstrates).

This care utilizes the nursing process and the standards of care of a professional nurse.

The RN is expected to perform all staff nurse activities and functions as charge nurse when assigned.

The RN maintains overall accountability/responsibility for assigned patients, even though some activities/ tasks may be delegated to Surgical Technologists, Patient Care Associated, Guest Associates and Anesthesia Technologists.
