Description: 70% Admissions and 30% MDS Registered Nurse
Shift: 12 PM to 8:00 p.m.
One on-call rotation every 6 weeks for 1 week.
Position Summary
Coordinates admissions services and communication for resident care, organizes physician orders, takes nursing histories, administers medications, observes patients, and documents assessments. Adjusts care plans based on resident needs and leads education initiatives. Models professionalism, implements policies, participates in training, and utilizes interpersonal skills to enhance staff motivation and collaboration with residents, families, and interdisciplinary teams.
Essential Job Functions
β’ Coordinates the services of the admissions department with physicians for the most comprehensive resident care.
β’ Establishes and maintains a communication process with all resident care, and for smooth operations of admitting, discharge, and transfer.
β’ Receives physician orders for direct admissions and organizes the admission process for residents.
β’ Obtains a nursing history and takes appropriate actions.
β’ Reviews results of procedures and communications with physicians.
β’ Administers prescribed medications and treatments in accordance with approved nursing techniques.
β’ Maintains awareness of the comfort and safety needs of residents.
β’ Observes patient, records significant conditions and reactions, and notifies supervisor or physician of residentβs condition and reaction to drugs, treatments, and significant incidents.
β’ Takes temperature, pulse, blood pressure, and other vital signs to detect deviations from normal and assess the conditions of the resident.
β’ Responds to life-saving situations based upon nursing standards, policies, procedures, and protocol.
β’ Documents nursing history and physical assessment for assigned residents. Describes care plan goals and approaches to direct care staff so that the care plan is consistently implemented on all shifts by all caregivers. Seeks input from nurse aides about resident condition, functional abilities, preferences, and alternative approaches to care.
β’ Performs physical assessment of new admissions and current residents as indicated by changes in condition or as required by regulation. Completes assigned sections of the resident assessment instruments used in the facility.
β’ Modifies approaches in plan of care to accommodate resident needs and preferences, to manage risk factors for functional decline, and to improve functional abilities.
β’ Initiates a resident education plan according to the individualized needs of the resident, as prescribed by the physician and/or nursing home policy, including resident and family instruction.
β’ Serves as a role model to all staff (responsiveness to other departments, courtesy in all interactions, timeliness in reporting to work, and productivity during the workday, respectfulness in staff-to-staff interactions and staff-to-resident interactions).
β’ Interprets and implements personnel policies, fire and disaster plans, policies, procedures, principles of safety, and nursing objectives for nursing personnel.
β’ Assists in planning and participates in the in-service education program, including personnel orientation and on-the-job training.
β’ Organizational and interpersonal skills to assign, motivate staff, elicit work output, improve quality, and interact effectively with residents, families, interdisciplinary team members, administration, government officials, consultants, and others, in addition to staff.
Qualifications
β’ Graduate of an accredited school of nursing with a current, active license as a Registered Nurse in the State of Wisconsin.
β’ Demonstrated competency in clinical skills needed for the facility resident population.
β’ Demonstrated competency in physical, behavioral, and functional capacity assessment of long-term care residents.
β’ Knowledge of state and federal regulations relevant to skilled nursing facilities.
β’ Able to understand and follow written and verbal directions. Able to express self adequately, accurately in written and/or oral communication (including documentation in clinical records) with direct care staff, interdisciplinary team members, administration, and government officials.
β’ Proficiency in the use of computer software is relevant to the job.
β’ Demonstrated organizational skills and ability to follow through on projects.

The Department of Emergency Medicine at the Medical College of Wisconsin (MCW) seeks a visionary and highly motivated researcher to join the Department as an Associate or Full Professor for the position of Vice Chair for Research and Scholarship.
Position Highlights:
- The Vice Chair will report directly to the System Chair of the Department of Emergency Medicine and be responsible for the development and implementation of strategic plans for the research mission of the department in conjunction with Department Chair β with a focus on increasing extramural funding and the number and quality of departmental peer-reviewed publications and presentations.
- The research mission is further supported by five directors reporting to the Vice Chair for Research and Scholarship: 1) Director of Research Operations; 2) Director of Research Education and Training; 3) Director of the Resuscitation Research Center (RRC); 4) Director of the Center for Substance Use Research and Intervention (SURI); and 5) Director of the Emergency Medicine (EM) Clinical Trials Unit (CTU).
- In addition, the research mission is supported by a well-rounded team of research staff, including scientists, project coordinators, and clinical trial enrollers.
- The major criteria for appointment to this position shall be demonstrated excellence in independent, extramurally-funded, investigative research β coupled with demonstrated collaborative leadership.
- Across eight clinical practice sites, our faculty, fellows, residents, and advanced practice providers (APPs) care for more than 200,000 patient visits across seven practice locations each year.
- Our department is home to a competitive training program of 36 (and expanding to 42) residents, which attracts top-notch house staff from medical schools across the nation.
- Additionally, the department administers several subspecialty fellowship programs in areas such as research, medical toxicology, critical care medicine, EMS, simulation, administration and operations, and medical education, among others.
- Many of our faculty members, fellows, residents, APPs, and staff in the department are engaged in a host of extramurally funded, cutting-edge, investigative research. Inquiry in the areas of cardiac arrest and resuscitation, substance use disorders, injury, EMS, and health equity, among others, have garnered MCW a reputation as a research force in the specialty of emergency medicine.
- As evidence of the departmentβs increased impact in discovery, this past academic year, we achieved highest-ever levels of extramural grant submissions, peer-reviewed publications, and international, national, and regional presentations.
- Building on this success, the next Vice Chair for Research and Scholarship will be charged with devising and implementing creative strategies to both increase departmental extramural funding from the National Institutes of Health (NIH) as well as further diversifying its overall funding portfolio.

- Successful applicants will possess an M.D. and/or Ph.D. as well as the qualifications to be appointed as Associate Professor or Professor with or without tenure.

- Desired qualities and skills include a track record of successfully managing research teams and resources. Other desirable qualities include ethical conduct, professionalism, clear communication skills, strong interpersonal skills, and leadership and management abilities sufficient to effectively lead and develop investigators and support staff.
- The candidate should have prior experience with budgetary oversight and grant administration.
- The candidate should have the ability to create and execute a strategic vision, provide guidance, and stimulate research endeavors in the Department of Emergency Medicine, while at the same time maintaining an active, extramurally funded research portfolio
