$83,200.00 - $93,184.00The Surgical and Neuroscience Intensive Care Unit (SICU and Neuro ICU) has a combined total of 30 intensive care beds designed to provide specialized care to the critically ill adult (14 and older) patient.  The unit has a usual 50/50 split of patient population between the neuro and surgical patient population.  

The focus of care is includes patients with life-threatening conditions related to major elective and emergency surgical procedures, multi-trauma, traumatic brain injury, spinal injury, stroke, seizure, sepsis/multi-organ system failure, hemodynamic instability and failure to wean. The SICU and Neuro ICU patient needs encompass but are not limited to comprehensive physical assessments, intensive monitoring, treatment of laboratory values, ventilator management and hemodynamic monitoring. 

SICU-Neuro ICU nurses require the following skill set – ICP monitoring via EVD or bolt, spinal drains/catheters, brain oxygen monitoring, Artic Sun therapy, continuous EEG, intra-arterial catheter, non-invasive cardiac output, mechanical ventilation, continuous renal replacement therapy, reconstructive flap monitoring, and massive blood transfusion among others.  Nursing will support the following on-unit procedures including placement of arterial lines, central lines, external ventricular drains and ICP monitors, SEPS drains, bedside bronchoscopy, abdominal washouts, tracheostomy, percutaneous endoscopic gastrostomy tube placement, lumbar punctures, chest tubes, pigtail drains and others.

The nurse is responsible for:

D5N is a 21 bed neurosciences unit with one level of care. We take patients with ischemic and hemorrhagic strokes, brain tumors, aneurysms, seizures, traumatic brain injuries, neuromuscular diseases and other diagnoses involving the neurologic system. The floor beds consist of patients requiring every 4-hour monitoring. Additionally, there are 7 Epilepsy Monitoring Unit (EMU) beds embedded in the 21 neuro floor beds. These patients are seizure disorder patients admitted electively with their anti-convulsant medications on hold and hard wired to continuous EEG. This allows the physicians to identify the area of the brain where the seizures are occurring. Many of these patients become candidates for brain mapping with surgically placed grids to further pinpoint the area causing the seizures. This mapping allows the surgeon to determine if the patient would be a candidate for surgical removal of parts of the brain to stop seizure activity and still allow the patient to have functionality. The nurse-to-patient ratio for floor patients is typically 1:5.Job Description

The SICU and Neuro ICU patient needs encompass but are not limited to comprehensive physical assessments, intensive monitoring, treatment of laboratory values, ventilator management and hemodynamic monitoring.

The Medical Cardiology unit is a 29-bed unit consisting of 1 private room, 13 semi-private rooms and one 4 bedroom. Patients are received from the Emergency Department, Cardiac Catheterization Lab, CCU, MICU, physician offices, and other facilities when inpatient admission is necessary.

The patient population served includes male and female, acute and chronically ill patients with a variety of cardiac and medical diagnoses. Most patients admitted to the unit require telemetry monitoring after receiving minimally-invasive and invasive cardiac procedures. The age range is from young adult (18 years) to geriatric (100+) years.

The nursing staff will work closely with the Wound Ostomy and Continence Nurses for ostomy and wound care needs. RNs will also care for post-operative patients with TPN, NG tubes, and central lines.

Job Description:

• Implements physician orders, administers medications, starts IVs, performs treatments, procedures 
  and special tests, and document treatment as required by company policy and local/state/federal 
  rules and regulations.
• Orders, interprets, and evaluates diagnostic tests to identify and assess patients' conditions.
• Assesses and evaluates patient needs for, and responses to, care rendered.
• Applies sound nursing judgment in patient care management decisions.
• Provides primary and emergency care for occupational and non-occupational injuries and illnesses.
• Administers over-the-counter and prescription medications as ordered.
• Collaborates with the nursing team to create a Plan of Care for all patients.
• Directs and guides ancillary personnel and maintain standards of professional nursing.
• Graduate of a professional academic nursing program in which a Diploma, Associate Degree or 
  Baccalaureate Degree is conferred
• Must hold current NYS Registered Nurse license
• Obtains and maintains certification in Basic Life Support (BLS) and Advanced Cardiac Life Support 
  (ACLS)
• Minimum of 1-3 years of previous clinical RN experience in Progressive Care or ICU.
• Excellent communication, prioritization, organizational and time-management skills
• Possesses knowledge of quality concepts, principles, and problem-solving tools and techniques 
  and demonstrates ability to apply in support of departmental and patient care quality improvement.
