The Education Specialist is expected to utilize their knowledge and skills to accomplish the goals of the organization. The Education Specialist achieves this goal through the roles of educator, performance consultant, and leader in collaboration with members of the Hospital, the Center, and the community.

Hours:

D5N is a 21 bed neurosciences unit with one level of care. We take patients with ischemic and hemorrhagic strokes, brain tumors, aneurysms, seizures, traumatic brain injuries, neuromuscular diseases and other diagnoses involving the neurologic system. The floor beds consist of patients requiring every 4-hour monitoring. Additionally, there are 7 Epilepsy Monitoring Unit (EMU) beds embedded in the 21 neuro floor beds. These patients are seizure disorder patients admitted electively with their anti-convulsant medications on hold and hard wired to continuous EEG. This allows the physicians to identify the area of the brain where the seizures are occurring. Many of these patients become candidates for brain mapping with surgically placed grids to further pinpoint the area causing the seizures. This mapping allows the surgeon to determine if the patient would be a candidate for surgical removal of parts of the brain to stop seizure activity and still allow the patient to have functionality. The nurse-to-patient ratio for floor patients is typically 1:5.

The Trauma Performance Improvement (PI) Coordinator fulfills an essential function and is dedicated to the Trauma Service at Albany Medical Center (AMC) in accordance with the American College of Surgeons (ACS) standards for both the adult and pediatric trauma program.  This individual works in collaboration with the trauma program leadership and is responsible for the coordination and facilitation of the trauma performance improvement process.  

• The Trauma PI Coordinator collects and analyzes benchmarking data, focus studies and clinical indicators.  

• They use advanced skills in quality assessment to perform comprehensive quality of care and service audits to facilitate the development of valid standards and tools. 

• The Trauma PI Coordinator ensures loop closure, prepares reports, presents outcomes and participates in organizational-wide continuous improvement projects as it relates to the trauma program. 

• They are self-motivated and a team player. 

• This individual demonstrates accuracy and confidentiality in the handling of all trauma-related matters. Most important the person in this position can conduct quantitative data analysis in reporting (metrics) as well as the qualitative. 

• This position needs to be continually challenging the Trauma program (Pediatric and Adult) and Trauma Teams to look at data; drawing them to metrics that measure care and outcomes and driving to results (PDCA) on safety and quality improvement. Due to the ratio of adult vs. pediatric patients, approximately 90% of the time should be focused on the adult population and 10% on pediatrics.

$95,680.00 - $148,304.00The “STAT” level Clinical Support Nurse is responsible for identifying the patient's alterations in health, assessing the patient's human response to actual and potential health problems, implementing nursing interventions to achieve outcomes for the patient that facilitate homeostasis, and determining the effectiveness of nursing interventions. The STAT Nurse makes independent decisions/judgments and takes action regarding a wide range of routine and complex patient problems and situations based on protocol. They will collaborate with other disciplines as appropriate, to coordinate continuity of patient care in support of medical and nursing plans of care. The STAT Nurse acts to support patient care needs in any acute medical/surgical unit, intensive care unit, and Emergency Department.

The STAT team is a group of critical care trained professional nurses who are available 24/7 for any issue within the hospital and medical college. STAT nurses provide specialized care to all patients, employees, and visitors requiring acute medical attention at Albany Medical Center and Albany Medical College. The team members also contribute their knowledge to educate staff, patients, and families to recognize clinical deterioration and how to make a proactive assessment and observation for patients at risk for deterioration. STAT team members give MOCK code training for nurses and ancillary staff to help facilitate better outcome in code situations.

STAT Nurses respond to:

Code stroke, Code Thrombectomy, Code STEMI, Code 10, Anesthesia Emergency, Code Blue, Code Malignant Hyperthermia, Code Pink, and Rapid Response pages. Any employee with questions about hospital policies, procedures, or patient care.

STAT Nurses will:

• Use problem focused physical exams to evaluate and treat patients according to protocols.
• Stabilize decompensating patients on the floor and in ICUs.
• Manage ICU patients on the floor.
• Facilitate movement of patients to higher level of care when needed.
• Use the chain of command when resolving issues.
• Assist visitors and staff to ED after a Code Gray.

• Designs and supports systems and manages projects directed at improving quality and patient care outcomes using information technology.
• Maintains current knowledge of computer applications used within the organization, evolving technologies, and current patient safety literature to guide system modifications and the pursuit of new clinical technology.
• Conducts periodic workflow analysis to optimize the use of technology in patient care.
• Provides input on clinical functions that are suitable for computer application and ensures the information systems are consistent with professional standards of nursing practice.
• Collaborates with the end user throughout the organization on all computer system related initiatives.
• Co-Lead and coordinate user group forums to continuously evaluate and improve system functionality.
• Collaborates with Director of Informatics, CNIO, CHIO, CMIO, CNO, Nursing Directors, AVPs and managers, Technology and IT staff on special projects.
• Utilizes a unique body of knowledge, preparation, and experience aligning with nursing profession.
• Incorporates concepts in applications to role of nursing and nurses in the care continuum.
• Coordinates the design and promotion of useful, innovative information technologies that advance practice interoperability and achieve desired outcomes.
• Considers the impact of technological changes on patient safety, healthcare delivery, quality reporting, and nursing process.
• Participates in organization level and divisional committees and work groups to advance technology and patient care.
• Collaborates with Nursing Education department(s) to develop training for system enhancements and implementations.
• Provides technical support for training.
• Identifies and develops “super-users” to provide training and support to other users in the nursing division.
• Communicates initiatives and enhancements for Patient Services, organizationally.
• Collaborates with Nursing Leadership and Quality Department(s) staff to design documentation tools and technology interfaces that foster safe and efficient care, and satisfy regulatory and accreditation requirements.
• Supports Data analytics and understands that real-time application of information by clinicians is a mechanism to change healthcare delivery and affect patient outcomes.
• Identifies and supporting system changes to support improvements in patient care and enhanced workflow and productivity.
• Incorporates key ethical concerns such as advocacy, privacy, and assurance of the confidentiality and security of data and information.
• Supports decision making of consumers, nurses, and other professionals to achieve safety and advocacy.
• Collaborates with Nursing and other disciplines to assure interdisciplinary integration of work processes.

Qualifications

• Bachelor's Degree in Nursing or related field - required
• 1-3 years of acute-care nursing clinical experience - required
• 1-3 years of Electronic Health Record (EHR) implementation experience (super user, trainer, or implementation project team member) - required
• Strong organization, interpersonal communication and planning skills. (Medium proficiency)
• Demonstrated ability to organize and present thoughts logically. (High proficiency)
• Ability to work with others to accomplish goals and solve problems. (High proficiency)
• Skills in effective project management. (Medium proficiency)
• RN - Registered Nurse - State Licensure and/or Compact State Licensure in NYS Upon Hire - required
• INS - Informatics Nurse Specialist within 1-1/2 Yrs - preferred
