ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS 

 

Knows, understands, incorporates, and demonstrates the Trinity Health Mission, Vision, and Values in behaviors, practices, and decisions.  

Deliver patient care through patient preparation, vital sign collection, and documentation. Assist with various procedures, exams, and diagnostic equipment (e.g., tympanometry, spirometry). Maintain aseptic techniques during preparation, procedures, and medication administration.  

Administer medications, treatments, and immunizations under the direction of providers. 

Prepare and organize patient charts with necessary information. File dictations and ensure completion of all required documentation. Communicate with patient regarding test results and plan of care   

Schedule procedures, labs, x-rays, and surgeries; provide pre- and post-surgery information. Assist with patient outreach for overdue visits, labs, and referrals. 

Coordinate physician schedules and ensure insurance pre-certifications. Schedule and manage patient follow-ups, ensuring continuity of care. 

Maintain patient confidentiality and adhere to organizational standards and ethical guidelines. 

Educate patients and families based on assessed needs and discharge plans. 

Promote evidence-based resources to optimize nursing practice and patient care. 

Proactively serves as a patient advocate by utilizing courteous and professional etiquette at all times reflecting positive tone and speaking distinctly with poise, tact and assurance. Assures accurate and complete messages to appropriate personnel. 

Assists in training, orienting, and supporting new colleagues. Work includes cross coverage in other clinic areas as team needs. 

Document patient plan(s) of care, tests and examination results in the medical record as directed by the provider. Escalate non-routine issues, questions and/or concerns to the practice manager or healthcare provider(s). 

Ensure safety checklists/quality controls are completed as required. 

Other duties as needed and assigned by the manager. 

Maintains a working knowledge of applicable Federal, State, and local laws and regulations, Trinity Health’s Organizational Integrity Program, Standards of Conduct, as well as other policies and procedures in order to ensure adherence in a manner that reflects honest, ethical, and professional behavior.  

 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS 

  

Must be comfortable operating in a collaborative, shared leadership environment.  

Successful completion of a medical assistant program accredited by the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Programs (CAAHP) or Accrediting Bureau of Health Education Schools (ABHES). 

Must obtain one of the following certifications listed for a Medical Assistant with their corresponding listed certification provider within one year of hire: 

Acceptable Certifications:  

  • Certification: Certified Medical Assistant (CMA). Provided by the American Association of Medical Assistants (AAMA) 

  • Certification: Registered Medical Assistant (RMA). Provided by the American Medical Technologists (AMT)  

  • Certification: Medical Assistant (NCMA). Provided by the National Center for Competency Testing  

  • Certification: Clinical Medical Assistant Certification (CMA). Provided by the American Medical Certification Association.  

  • Certification: Certified Clinical Medical Assistant (CCMA). Provided by the National Health Career Association.  

  • Certification: Nationally Registered Certified Medical Assistant (NRCMA). Provided by the National Association for Health Professionals (NAHP)

Basic Life Support (BLS) certification required within 3 months of hire.

4. BLS, Mandatory Reporter. 

5. ACLS within 12 months of hire.

6. Cardiac monitoring course and/or select units of advance Nursing / Critical Care Course or comparable training

7. Non-Violent Crisis Intervention Training (NVCI) within 6 months of hire

8. Basic computer skills required.

9. Ability to work with diverse groups of people.

12. If caring for ECLS patients as a Specialist:

  • Satisfactorily participate in an introductory (8) hour ECLS competency simulation workshop verified by the ECLS Coordinator and ECLS Medical Director.

  • Satisfy annual requirements to maintain status as an ECLS specialist.

Position Purpose:

Provides and directs safe, effective and culturally competent care for high risk, critically acute patients with actual or potential life-threatening conditions.  Through evidence-based practice, utilizes critical thinking to assess, plan, implement and evaluate outcome-based care of patients. The Cardiac Device Nurse plays a critical role in the comprehensive care of patients with implanted cardiac devices, including pacemakers, implantable cardioverter-defibrillators (ICDs), and insertable cardiac monitors (ICMs). This position involves direct patient care, device interrogation and programming, patient education, and collaboration with cardiologists and other healthcare professionals to optimize patient outcomes. The ideal candidate will possess specialized knowledge in cardiac electrophysiology and a strong commitment to patient safety and education.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Device Interrogation and Programming:
    • Perform in-person and remote interrogations of pacemakers, ICDs, and ICMs according to established protocols and physician orders.
    • Analyze device data, including electrograms, trends, and diagnostic information, to identify arrhythmias, lead issues, and device malfunctions.
    • Program devices based on physician orders and patient needs, ensuring optimal device function and appropriate therapy delivery.
    • Document all device interrogations, programming changes, and patient responses accurately and thoroughly in the electronic health record (EHR).
  • Patient Education and Support:
    • Provide comprehensive education to patients and their families regarding their cardiac device, including its function, potential alarms, lifestyle modifications, follow-up schedules, and emergency protocols.
    • Address patient questions and concerns with empathy and clarity.
    • Monitor patient symptoms and device performance, providing guidance and escalating issues to the physician as needed.
  • Clinic Operations:
    • Schedule and coordinate in-person and remote device follow-up appointments.
    • Manage device alerts and transmissions from remote monitoring systems, triaging and escalating urgent findings to the cardiologist.
    • Assist with device recalls and advisories, ensuring timely patient notification and appropriate action.
    • Maintain device clinic equipment and inventory.
    • Collaborate with device company representatives for technical support, education, and access to new technologies.
  • Collaboration and Communication:
    • Work closely with cardiologists, electrophysiologists, medical assistants, and other clinic staff to ensure coordinated and efficient patient care.
    • Communicate effectively with patients, families, and healthcare team members.
    • Participate in team meetings, quality improvement initiatives, and continuing education pertinent to cardiac device management.
  • Documentation and Compliance:
    • Maintain accurate, complete, and timely documentation of all patient encounters, device data, and communications in the EHR, adhering to clinic policies and regulatory standards.
    • Ensure compliance with all relevant policies, procedures, and regulatory requirements (e.g., HIPAA, JCAHO).

Qualifications:

  • Education: Graduate of an accredited school of nursing (BSN Preferred)
  • Licensure: Current, unencumbered Registered Nurse (RN) license in Iowa
  • Experience: Minimum of 2 years of clinical nursing experience, with at least 1 year specifically in cardiac device management (pacemakers, ICDs, ICMs) in a clinic or hospital setting.
  • Certifications:
    • Basic Life Support (BLS) certification required.
    • Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support (ACLS) certification preferred.

Essential Key Job Responsibilities:

    • Delivers assigned patient care and treatment as delegated by an RN or LPN.

    • Performs or assists patients with activities including personal hygiene, bathing, ambulation, transporting, range of motion exercises, dressing/undressing, feeding, changing bandages, elimination needs, and emptying drainage devices.

    • Responds to patient calls and anticipates patient needs.

    • Assures patient safety and comfort through use of safe patient handling techniques, regular rounding, environmental maintenance, equipment maintenance, and other appropriate safety measures.

    • Calculates intake and output (excluding IVs). Measures vital signs. 

    • Performs bedside blood glucose testing. 

    • Makes entries to patient health records as consistent with scope of job duties and in compliance with company policy.

    • Initiates or assists with emergency support measures (i.e., cardiopulmonary resuscitation, protecting patient from injury).

    • Performs post-mortem care.

    • Sets up equipment and supplies for procedures. 

    • Prepares patients and rooms for procedures, admissions, and transfers. 

    • Discharges patients from system.

    • Observes and reports information regarding any change in physical/mental condition, behavior, or status of the patient to the nurse.

    • Collects and labels specimens.

    • Sets up, operates, and maintains selected pieces of equipment.
