  • Ensures efficient patient flow by rooming patients in a timely manner and assisting the provider with staying timely on their schedule

  • Delivers an exceptional patient experience, and helps patients prepare for their provider visit

  • Obtains vital signs, chief complaint and reviews medications

  • Delivers patient screenings per protocols

  • Orders supplies and stocks exam rooms

  • Conducts routine quality control checks, including infection control measures, equipment QAs, and checks for expired medication and supplies

  • Ensures exam rooms are clean, safe, and ready for patient visits

  • Under direction of an RN, provider and/or protocol, provides telephonic support to patients

  • Assists providers, RNs or social workers with home based support for high risk members, as necessary

  • Under direction of an RN or Provider, offers MA appropriate โ€œvisitsโ€, such as administering vaccinations and performing procedures, including but not limited to: ABI, spirometry, EKGs, etc.

  • Performs waived laboratory testing

  • Schedules diagnostic testing

  • Applies or assists with application of durable medical equipment

  • Supports care team with obtaining medical records, and ensuring records are scanned into the EMR per protocols

  • Participates in care team meetings to discuss patient care and clinic operations

The back office Medical Assistant assists the provider (Physician, Physician Assistant or Nurse Practitioner) in examination and treatment of patients by performing the following duties.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

1. Completes intake by welcoming patients and prepares patients for healthcare visit by placing patient in exam room, obtains medical history and verifies patientโ€™s information.
2. Responsible for documenting a full and accurate set of vital signs.
3. Populates all sections of the electronic medical record timely and accurately, including but not limited to allergies, medications, vaccines, social history and quality tab.
4. Assists providers during examination and treatment, performing point of care tests appropriate to skill level, certifications and state regulations.
5. Maintains supplies in storage areas and exam rooms.
6. Disinfects, cleans treatment rooms following patient examinations; Maintains safe, secure, and healthy work environment by establishing and following standards and procedures; complying with legal regulations.
7. Conducts business in a service-oriented manner that is attentive, cooperative, sensitive and respectful with all patients, visitors and colleagues.
8. Responsible for pre-visit planning per the standard operating procedure guidelines.
9. Maintain all logs and required checks (i.e. refrigerator temperatures, emergency medications, expired medications, oxygen, etc.)
10. Responsible to checking and addressing voicemails multiple times during the working day.
11. Responsible for addressing inbox messages (buckets) in the electronic medical record for providers, provider staff and self.
12. Back-up front office when needed including check in, check out, appointment scheduling and answering phones.
13. Maintain a professional working relationship with vendors that support the practice.
14. Follow HIPAA guidelines for all internal and external systems.
15. Ability to communicate appropriately with awareness of surroundings and audience.
16. Attends trainings and meetings as required.

Position Overview โ€“ Back Office Medical Assistant

The Medical Assistant supports Physicians, Physician Assistants (PA), and Nurse Practitioners (NP) in delivering comprehensive patient care. This role combines clinical Medical Assistant duties, EMR documentation, patient intake, vital signs collection, and point-of-care testing.

This is an in-office, patient-facing role in a Family Medicine clinic.

Medical Assistant Responsibilities

Clinical Duties

- Perform patient intake, including medical history, medications, allergies, and social history

- Record accurate vital signs

- Prepare patients for examination and treatment

- Assist provider during exams and procedures

- Perform point-of-care testing (within certification scope)

- Administer vaccines per protocol (if certified and applicable)

- Conduct pre-visit planning

EMR & Administrative Support

- Document in Electronic Medical Record (EMR) accurately and timely

- Experience with Athenahealth EMR preferred

- Manage provider inbox tasks and patient messages

- Maintain compliance logs (refrigerator temps, emergency medications, oxygen checks)

- Support front office operations when needed (check-in, scheduling, phones)

Required Qualifications

- High School Diploma or GED

- Current BLS certification

- Active Medical Assistant certification (CMA, RMA, CCMA preferred)

- Previous Medical Assistant experience required

- Strong computer and EMR skills

  • 6 months of Women and Infants nursing (RN) experience or completion of the UCHealth Fellowship program.
  • NRP within 6 months of hire.
  • BLS through the American Heart Association or the American Red Cross CPR for the Professional Rescuer with card in-hand before start date. BLS or CPR card must be good through sixty days of hire.

Job Summary and Qualifications

The Registered Nurse demonstrates advanced knowledge, skills and understands the unique aspects of the population served in the care of his/her patients. Each service also requires specialized skills. The delivery of care is based on the physical, psychosocial, cultural, safety and learning needs of the individual patient. The Registered Nurse may rotate to areas other than his/her assigned service area/s, and will perform only those duties for which he/she has demonstrated competency. The Registered Nurse performs delegated duties consistent with the scope of practice and functions within the philosophy and overall plan of care delivery at SMC.


What qualifications you will need:
  • Current licensure in the State of Colorado as a Registered Nurse, or current active multistate nursing licensure.
  • Current BLS Certification through AHA or ARC.
  • Graduate of a certified School of Nursing.
  • Able to articulate and demonstrate appropriate nursing theory and practice.
