New Jersey Family Planning League (NJFPL)


The New Jersey Family Planning League (NJFPL or the League) is a 501(c) (3) organization which provides funding, resources and support to a network of reproductive health providers in the state of New Jersey, ensuring that all residents have access to high-quality sexual and reproductive healthcare services regardless of their identity, income, or insurance status.


NJFPL serves as a cornerstone of New Jersey’s public health infrastructure, sustaining and strengthening a diverse network of 22 healthcare providers who operate 71 sites across all 21 counties of the state. In 2025, our network provided essential care to 139,157 family planning patients and 29,805 abortion patients. We ensure the delivery of high-quality services by empowering our agencies with critical funding, specialized training, technical assistance, policy and regulatory analysis, and strategic planning guidance.

NJFPL Board Directors serve a two-year term, providing critical leadership through governance, resource development, and financial oversight of the organization. At NJFPL, we rely on the active participation of every Director to drive our mission forward. The expectations for this commitment are outlined below:


Responsibilities of the Board

As the highest leadership body of NJFPL, the Board is responsible for:


Mission stewardship, including periodic review of the organization’s mission to

ensure:

o       Its relevance to community needs

o       Programming, budgets and partnerships align

o       Formal changes are approved


  • Financial oversight to make sure that resources are being used effectively to further the mission, including approval of the annual operating budget, monitoring organizational spending, tax compliance, understanding of assets and liabilities, setting policies to prevent fraud or mismanagement, and ensuring the organization’s long-term sustainability
  • Hiring, evaluation and support of the President and CEO
  • Performance oversight of programs and services to ensure goals are being met and producing results
  • Contributing to the development of the organization’s strategic plan and
  • organizational structure
  • Advocacy for family planning and abortion services in the State of New Jersey
  • Fostering the implementation of the necessary political strategy and advocacy needed to support evolving and changing political landscapes.
  • Facilitate fundraising opportunities and resources
  • Enhancing the organization’s public image and participating in public affairs activities – which consists of advocating on behalf of NJFPL whether through letters, telephone calls, or meetings.
  • Assessing its own performance as the governing body of the organization.
  • Ensuring legal and ethical integrity.


Responsibilities of Individual Board Members


Each individual Board member is expected to:

  • Know NJFPL’s mission, Board of Director Bylaws, programs, and needs as well as
  • understand its collective purpose.
  • Provide New Jersey Service Area Representation, as outlined in the Bylaws, for the purpose of garnering statewide representation on the Board in North, Central, and South Jersey.
  • Prepare for, attend, and conscientiously participate in Board meetings.
  • Participate fully in one or more Committees or taskforces.
  • Contribute financially to the organization in an amount that is most meaningful to them (there is no maximum or minimum) and/or secure donations from their personal or professional networks
  • Faithfully read and understand the organization’s financial statements and Board materials in advance of meetings.
  • Serve as active advocates and ambassadors for the organization.
  • Actively seek out connections on behalf of NJFPL within your centers of influence and promote NJFPL within your religious, political and business communities.
  • Help identify personal connections that can benefit the organization’s fundraising and reputation, standing, and influence public policy.
  • Engage in learning opportunities to better understand the community we serve.
  • Respect the perspectives of all who bring their voices and lived experiences.


Other Responsibilities of Board Members

  • Uphold the legal duties and laws regarding nonprofit governance.
  • Follow the organization’s Bylaws, policies, and Board resolutions.
  • Sign an annual conflict-of-interest disclosure and update it during the year, if necessary, as well as disclose potential conflicts before meetings and actual conflicts during meetings.
  • Maintain confidentiality about all internal matters of the organization.

The Division of Cerebrovascular Diseases led by Colum Amory, MD, MPH, at the Department of Neurology, Hackensack University Medical Center (HUMC), a major academic medical center within the Hackensack Meridian Health network (HMH), seeks a full time Vascular Neurologist to join its Joint Commission certified Comprehensive Stroke Center. The successful candidate will have completed a residency in Neurology and an ACGME accredited fellowship in Vascular Neurology.


HUMC is one of the 3 principal teaching hospitals for the Hackensack Meridian School of Medicine and for the HMH network. It features 775 beds and sees some 900 annual stroke admissions, many transferred from its affiliated spoke Primary Stroke Centers. The stroke unit is staffed by APNs 24/7. Stroke APNs provide support to the stroke service on all units. The Department of Neurosurgery has a highly experienced team of neurosurgeons and interventional surgical neuroradiologists providing care to patients with large vessel occlusions, intracerebral hemorrhage and subarachnoid hemorrhage. The neurocritical care program runs a fully staffed and closed Neurocritical Care unit. Night call is facilitated by the availability of telemedicine robots to all members of the stroke service. Outpatient stroke clinics provide consultation for complex stroke diagnoses as well as follow-up for discharged patients. Teaching responsibilities include stroke neurology training of medical students and neurology and other residents.

Summary of Duties

This position is responsible for providing both administrative and clinical support to ensure the smooth operation of a medical practice and the highest level of care for patients. The Medical Assistant will assist with patient preparation, perform various clinical tasks, and maintain administrative responsibilities while ensuring compliance with HIPAA regulations and established security policies.

Essential Functions:

  • Complete disability forms, care plans (home health, physical therapy, rehabilitation, etc.), and prepare documentation such as jury duty or work-related letters.
  • Process prior authorizations for medications.
  • Manage patient-related correspondence.
  • Prepare and submit medical appeals as required.
  • Patient Care & Preparation
  • Patient Preparation
  • Confirm completion of required studies prior to scheduled patient visits.
  • Patient Work-Up
  • Measure and record vital signs (height, weight, blood pressure).
  • Document patient history, including medical, surgical, family, allergy, and smoking history.
  • Create accurate encounter notes.
  • Retrieve imaging for review by the Nurse Practitioner or Physician.
  • Review and update medication lists at every visit.
  • Verify medication history through appropriate prescription monitoring systems.
  • Document referring provider information.
  • Collect details related to physical therapy (such as dates and treatment locations).
  • Chart Preparation & Patient Follow-Ups
  • Retrieve reports for upcoming appointments, including radiology, consults, laboratory results, and other treatment orders.
  • Contact patients with test results as directed by the physician.
  • Fit patients with cervical collars or lumbar braces when required.
  • Manage physical therapy renewal requests.

Clinical & Office Support:

  • Process prescription refill requests and triage calls to physicians or nurse practitioners as appropriate.
  • Direct imaging-related inquiries to the appropriate provider.
  • Respond to calls from staff and patients.
  • Utilize the electronic health record (EHR) tracking system to manage patient flow and communications.
  • Clean and restock exam rooms as needed.
  • Support team operations by assisting with additional tasks or coverage as required.
  • Remain available to support the assigned provider until the final patient visit is completed.
  • HIPAA Compliance & Workstation Security
  • Maintain the confidentiality, integrity, and security of patient information in compliance with HIPAA regulations.
  • Protect sensitive patient information in both electronic and paper formats.
  • Maintain confidentiality of patient medical records during and after care.
  • Share patient information only with authorized personnel directly involved in patient care.
  • Follow proper security protocols for all data exchanges, including fax, email, and phone communications.
  • Adhere to workstation security policies to ensure all devices and systems remain secure.
  • Immediately report any suspected security breaches or suspicious activity to appropriate administrative personnel.

OSHA Compliance:

Follow OSHA guidelines and infection control protocols to ensure a safe and compliant clinical environment for patients and staff.

Education:

  • High school diploma or equivalent required.
  • Completion of a Certified Medical Assistant (CMA) program preferred but not required.

Skills & Experience:

  • Strong understanding of medical terminology and clinical procedures.
  • Proficiency in electronic health record (EHR) systems.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to multitask and work efficiently in a fast-paced environment.
  • Strong organizational and time management skills.
