Responsibilities

  • This functional statement is specific to Physician Assistant within the Specialty Care Integrated Care Community (SC ICC) to perform duties as a Dermatology Physician Assistant in the outpatient setting. This is a (100%) (full-time) clinical position involving the provision of Dermatology. These services will be rendered in a thoughtful and resource effective manner consistent both with VA policies and with the highest standards of medical care. Such activities include, but are not limited to, diagnosis and treatment of acute and chronic illness; basic dermatology procedures including biopsies, cryotherapy, electrodessication and curettage; patient and family teaching, consulting and collaborating with other health care providers; prescribing medications and adjunctive modalities; refers appropriately to other specialties as needed; provides care coordination between service lines; and communication with patients and/or their appropriate surrogates regarding findings and management plans. The incumbent must demonstrate leadership, strong clinical and physical assessment skills. The PA works in close collaboration with the dermatology and general medicine section chiefs, staff physicians, dermatology nursing staff and dermatology residents (if any).Duties of the provider:
  • The Dermatology PA will provide Dermatology consultation services and follow up care of Dermatology patients in the outpatient setting at the VA Hudson Valley Health Care System.
  • The Dermatology PA will be expected to collaborate with the Dermatology Physician(s) in the Dermatology department to discuss challenging procedural, diagnostic and/or therapeutic scenarios as needed.
  • The Dermatology PA shall refer recognized medical problems beyond the specialized scope of the PA to the supervising physician or appropriate specialty service for definitive diagnosis and treatment.
  • The Dermatology PA may be asked to travel between Montrose and Castle Point Campus and to Community Based Outpatient Clinics as requested/assigned by the ACOS-SC.
  • The Dermatology PA may be tasked by the ACOS-SC to participate in facility Committees where subject matter expert knowledge of Dermatology may be beneficial.
  • The Dermatology PA will provide Electronic Consultation services (E-Consults) and reviews consults for determination if appropriate for Care in the Community of local/regional VA services.
  • The Dermatology Physician Assistant may need to act as surrogates for the patients of their colleagues, when one or more of their colleagues are on leave.
  • The Dermatology PA will follow departmental and VHA policies for leave and attendance and will work within Title 38 appointment guidelines.
  • The Dermatology PA may be required to direct care coordination between numerous hospital services including General Surgery, ENT, Urology, Liver Clinic, Primary Care, Women's Clinic and Palliative Care during the care of their patients in the Dermatology department.
  • The Dermatology PA will Provide education and counseling for patients regarding medical conditions, health status and the use of prescribed treatment and drugs.
  • The Dermatology PA will complete clinical documentation in all areas in accordance with facility policy. Prohibited abbreviations shall not to be used.
