Work Shift

Job Summary:
Performs assigned patient care duties under the direction of a licensed provider (MD/PA/NP) or RN. Responsible for performing CMA clinical duties to include, but not limited to obtaining vital signs, administering limited profile of medications/injections per approved policy, performing simple diagnostic tests, collecting specimens, drawing blood, cleaning equipment, ordering/stocking supplies, and maintaining exam rooms in an outpatient care setting. Assists in emergencies as directed by licensed provider or RN. Duties are practice site-specific and may fluctuate based on location.

Core Responsibilities and Essential Functions:
Completion of Ambulatory Intake to include: Interviewing patients for information about the visit and any recent problems. Obtains vital signs, height and weight, medical, family, and social history. Verified that one current problem exists. Update allergies and medications and accurately record findings on intake form in EMR. May be required to perform EKGs, ABIs, six-minute walk tests, etc.
Assists physicians with exams and procedures. Prepares room with supplies and instruments. Provides education and emotional support to the patient throughout the procedure. Properly disposes of biohazard waste. Documents procedure in AD Hoc note in EMR.
Answers triage nurse line or retrieves voicemail messages. Provides information to caller promptly (within 24 hours). Documents disposition/request for information via inbox message in PowerChart to patients physician. Consults with RN/PA in the clinic as necessary in absence of a physician. Maintains contact with supported providers during nonclinic days via phone, PowerChart inbox messages, etc.
Obtains labs (to include blood, urine, and nasal swabs) per hospital policy; documents and enters charges accordingly. May administer seasonal flu/pneumonia vaccines and other site-specific premeasured injections.
Maintains assigned exam rooms. Wipes down exam table, equipment, BP cuffs, scales, computer keyboard. Restocks linen and medical supplies. Annotates same on room log. Monitor expiration dates on all applicable supplies. Maintains assigned areas of the clinic by completing environmental sweeps monthly or more often.
Front office duties as assigned (registration, scheduling, payment collection, check-in/out, insurance authorization, etc.) Other duties as assigned.
Performs other duties as assigned

- High School Diploma General or GED General

Job Summary:

The Nurse Extern is an unlicensed staff member who supports licensed, professional staff in providing care and service to all patients & families. Under direct supervision of a registered nursing professional, performs a variety of basic to intermediate level nursing care activities that contribute to the comfort and safety of patients. Under supervision and nurse unit dependent, perform tasks to include but not limited to: tracheostomy care, discontinuing peripheral intravenous lines, in-line suctioning of ventilator patients.
Under supervision, perform tasks to include, but not limited to: ensure laboratory specimens are properly labeled and promptly delivered to appropriate departments, assist in the coordination of unit activities to ensure that patients' needs are met efficiently, serve as a runner between pharmacy, pathology, and x-ray.

Demonstrates competency in invasive and non-invasive critical procedures and equipment. Serves as a respiratory consultant to all hospital service lines. Attends daily patient rounds. Demonstrates knowledge of respiratory medications and pharmacologic interactions. Cites AARC guidelines and remains current in the field of Respiratory Care. Demonstrates knowledge of clinical chemistries to include ABGs and electrolytes and assists others in the application of results. Is a member of the Rapid Response and Resuscitation Teams and skillfully establishes and maintains artificial airways in emergencies. Competent in use and quality control for all point of care analyzers. Participates and facilitates quality improvement projects. Facilitates patient discharge to home and provides patient and family education. Provides clinical assistance in the orientation of new employees and students on clinical rotation. Provides education to all clinical team members to include physicians and nurses at the bedside and informal classroom setting. Maintains Basic and Advanced certifications as appropriate to assigned areas such as BLS, ACLS, FCCS, PALS, and NRP. Participates in clinical trials and research activities. Demonstrates the ability to resolve difficult situations with finesse and skill. Has the ability to prioritize and triage delivery of care during times of high acuity. Demonstrates good oral and written communication skills and assures all documentation is accurate, legible and in accordance with hospital policy. Skilled in-Patient Family-Centered Care. Uses hospital information systems skillfully and complies with security policies. Follows proper handoff procedure for all transferred patients to assure coordination of care. Processes all associated clinical equipment and devices to industry standards and performs routine and basic maintenance with associated documentation. Participates in patient transports both in and outside the hospital. Conforms and champions infection prevention measures.
