This is a waterfront shipboard construction and re-modernization position, working within shipyards and drydocks onboard U.S. Naval ships. The incumbent will be working in varying temperatures of high heat in the summer and cold in the winter preforming the following tasks:
Contingencies: Satisfaction of all eligibility requirements as dictated by any customer account or business area that you will be supporting. The eligibility requirements for continued employment in this position include, but may not be limited to, obtaining DBIDS, and access to all shipyards. Applies appropriate welding processes to join, surface, fabricate, or repair parts of metal or other materials that require welding.
Works from blueprints, engineering sketches, charts, or work orders.
Lays out and marks points on parts or subassemblies using rule, square, scribe or templates.
Uses measuring instruments and hand tools to position pieces that require welding into jigs, holding fixtures, guides, and steps using measuring instruments and hand tools.
May inspect completed work for conformance to specifications.

Surface Warfare Officers (SWOs) are involved in virtually every aspect of Navy missions. As a SWO, you may be in charge of any number of shipboard operations and activities while at sea, working with or within any of these specialized forces:

Aircraft Carrier Forces: Provide and coordinate air, submarine and surface ship defense for aircraft carriers.

Cruiser-Destroyer Forces: Provide ship attack and defensive measures with a wide array of missile and fire power capabilities, providing anti-air, -submarine and -surface warfare support.

Amphibious Forces: Embark and transport vehicles, equipment and personnel for amphibious assault operations.

Combat-Logistics Forces: Provide combatant ships with fuel, ammunition, food and supplies, and provide repair, maintenance and rescue capabilities through Fleet Support Ships.

Mine Warfare Forces: Detect, identify and neutralize threats from hostile use of maritime mines.

Work Environment

The Work You’ll Be Doing

In this role, you will:



  • Operate manual and CNC machining equipment used in naval shipbuilding
  • Work with machines such as lathes, mills, vertical machining centers, and horizontal boring mills
  • Perform machining operations to produce precision components used in naval vessels
  • Troubleshoot machining operations and adjust processes when required
  • Perform dimensional inspections to ensure parts meet engineering drawing specifications
