Role Description

Pharmacy Director is responsible for planning, budgeting, directing, and supervising pharmacy activities and personnel, including managing new programs within the department and for the hospital. The individual will collaborate with members of the medical staff to ensure efficient utilization of designated resources for optimal patient care and will provide oversight of the pharmacy area as necessary to meet patient, client and staff needs. Maintains the pharmacy within established hospital and regulatory agency laws and Department of Public Health Regulations.


Qualifications

· Bachelor of Science in Pharmacy and MS or PharmD

· Minimum three to five years’ experience of previous/administrative experience required

· Minimum one to three years’ experience as a registered pharmacist in a hospital setting preferred

· Current state pharmacist license required Strong professional, organizational and interpersonal skills to effectively relate with all members of the healthcare team

· Interpersonal skills to communicate effectively with physicians and various other hospital personnel

· Demonstrated fiscal accountability and ability to achieve outcomes within allocated resources

· Ability to handle multiple priorities and make independent decisions under pressures


Summary

Leadership and Administration

1. Under direction of Chief Operating Officer, assumes responsibility for the operation, administration, technical supervision, and management of the pharmacy department. Responsible for the performance of duties required by the pharmacy as defined by the scope of service to ensure that the unique nature of the patient is addressed.

2. Orients staff to the department/hospital policies and procedures including documentation of orientation and skills checklists.

3. Oversees the effective functioning of the department, oversees department expense versus budget allocation for successful operational performance. Demonstrates fiscal accountability for department resources and the ability to achieve outcomes within allocated resources.

o Develops department operating budget by deadline

o Monitors budget monthly and explains variances

o Develops and recommends capital expenditures

4. Plans, organizes, and directs department activities. Develops goals and objectives and establishes and implements policies and procedures for department operation.

o Reviews department performance and effects changes as needed to improve services provided

o Assures compliance with regulatory requirements on a monthly and annual basis

o Keeps administration informed of department activities, needs, problems, and new drug regulations through meetings with Chief Operating Officer

Staff Management

5. Selects, trains/orients and assigns department staff. Develops standards of performance and monitors and supervises staff; evaluates performance and initiates or makes recommendations for personnel actions such as salary increases, promotions, and disciplinary action.

o Encourages professional development of department personnel through Inservice education and outside conferences

o Develops and maintains job descriptions for all staff members (reviewed annually)

o Resolves staff differences

o Approves staff requests for time off

6. Coordinates monthly staff meetings with pharmacy staff to provide feedback, education, and communication on department and/or hospital specific issues.

Clinical and Professional Services

7. Serves as a resource to hospital staff and management on all pharmacy related issues including participation on various committees as assigned.

8. Educates healthcare professionals and patients on medication use as well as compounding and dispensing prescribed medications for patient care.

9. Develops policies and procedures relating to pharmacy department and to distribution and administration of drugs throughout the hospital; maintains and updates hospital formulary. Ensures delivery of quality and safe pharmacy services to inpatients, outpatients, and employees.

o Under auspices of Pharmacy & Therapeutics committee, develop safe and effective medication administration policies and procedures

o Develops medication formulary list that serves the needs of the patient in safe, effective, economic fashion

10. Performs professional and technical activities associated with distribution of medications, maintenance of drug inventory, patient records, and patient financial records.

o Establishes charging and billing system with fiscal services department (reviewed annually)

Medication Management and Safety

11. Accepts total responsibility for orders including review, clarification, order entry, accuracy, preparation, follow up and delivery to correct unit. Identifies, intervenes, and assures resolution when problems involving drug therapy are identified.

12. Visually reads and interprets physician's orders including drug product, strength, dosage, start and stop time, initial inventory quantity, etc. Assures that appropriate products are selected to prepare the dose accurately.

13. Routinely follows internal procedures in the pharmacy and on nursing units to verify controlled substance inventories, minimize drug diversion, and document wastes or missing doses.

14. Routinely checks for expired drugs.

15. Routinely performs nursing unit inspections, narcotics audits, and nursing/pharmacy meetings.

16. Responsible for acquisition and purchasing of quality drugs for hospital usage.

17. Develops and maintains quality assurance records and techniques of the department. Evaluates pharmacy functions, practices and reporting.
