Summary: The Refining Assistant supports the refining team in processing precious metal materials including silver, gold, and other recoverable metals into high-purity products. This role involves preparing materials, assisting with melting processes, using company databases or other computer systems to evaluate and track precious metals, maintaining equipment and work areas, and ensuring accurate documentation while following strict safety procedures.
Essential Functions:
- Receive, sort, weigh, and prepare precious metal materials for melting and refining.
- Break down scrap, remove contaminants, and stage materials for processing.
- Videotape inbound packages being opened.
- Use computer software (XRF scanners) to evaluate payout of packages.
- Label and track batches to maintain material accountability and chain of custody.
- Melt precious metals using induction equipment.
- Load furnaces, prepare crucibles, add fluxes, and monitor melt conditions.
- Pour molten metal into molds to produce bars, grain, or other forms.
- Clean crucibles, molds, and melting equipment after use.
- Enter weights, assay data, melt logs, and batch information into company database.
- Assist with calculating estimated values, lot balances, and material reconciliation.
- Move materials using carts into finished location.
- Maintain cleanliness of production and secure storage areas.
- Report equipment issues to the refiner or maintenance personnel.
- Follow procedures for handling acids, chemicals, and molten precious metals.
- Use required PPE and maintain a clean, organized workspace.
- Assist with proper waste handling and environmental compliance.
- Record weights, melt logs, assay data in company database.
- Regular attendance and compliance with the Company's handbook policies and procedures.
Supervisory Responsibilities: No supervisor responsibilities.

Competencies:
- Ability to remain calm in stressful environment.
- Mechanical aptitude and ability to learn precious metal melting.
- Ability to safely work with furnaces, molten metal, and chemicals.
- Computer skills for data entry, Excel spreadsheets, and production tracking
- Strong attention to detail and material accountability.
- Strong organizational and planning skills.
- OSHA and hazardous waste management knowledge.
- Able to measure and use basic math for weights, yields, and recovery calculations.
- Effective communication and teamwork skills to collaborate with production teams.

- Ability to multitask in a fast-paced environment and adhere to all safety protocols.
Physical Demands:
- Wear a full-faced respirator, rubber gloves, apron, chemical suit, heat jacket, and heavy-duty metal free boots.
- Maneuver 500 lbs. barrels using barrel mover or barrel lifter.
- Use pallet jacks to move 3000 lbs. of chemical totes.
- Occasionally lift and handle materials up to 150 pounds as needed.
- Use of fine motor skills.
- Requires standing, lifting, bending, stretching, twisting and repetitive material handling.
Work Environment:
This position works in a "secure area" of the building. The refinery temperature conditions change and vary from 40 to 80-degree Fahrenheit, based on the outside air intake temperatures. This position will expose the refining assistant to heat, molten metals, chemicals, and industrial noise. All office work is done at a desk outside of the refinery, but within the secure area. Individuals working in the "secure area" must follow the Company's Secure Area Dress Code and Security policies and procedures. All clothing must be free from metal, and no metal may be worn into the secure area of the building. Any metal inside or outside the body due to a medical condition must be visually inspected, or reasonable accommodations may be made.
Position Type and Expected Hours of Work: Monday through Friday from 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.
Travel: No travel required.
Required Education and Experience: High School Diploma or GED.
Preferred Education and Experience: OSHA and Hazmat knowledge and experience. Prior experience working with hot metals.
