General Summary of Position
The Medical Assistant performs clinical and administrative duties in an ambulatory care setting under the supervision of a physician/provider and/or a registered nurse. Duties may include venipuncture medication and vaccine administration measurement and documentation of vital signs and assisting providers with patient exams and telephone and clerical support. Position may float to other sites/locations within the system.
Primary Duties and Responsibilities

* Contributes to the achievement of established department goals and objectives and adheres to department policies procedures quality and safety standards. Complies with governmental regulations and accreditation standards.
* Assists providers with patient preparation for the examination minor office procedures and with the examination and education of patients. Supports other members of the clinical care team assuring optimal best-practice patient flow; manages variable and unpredictable patient volume throughout the workday. Provides clerical support and serves as backup for the Patient Services Coordinator or other team members as needed.
* Participates in daily team huddles to review and prepare for scheduled patient visits. Screens all patients regardless of visit type for preventative care needs ongoing support barriers to care safety concerns and potential fall risk. Conducts surveillance for transitions of care urgent/emergent care or follow up tasks such as retrieval of documents associated with referrals/testing.
* Conducts motivational interviews that include patient screening and/or coaching on disease management ability motivation to change learning care needs and community outreach needs. Identifies potential behavioral health needs of patients using appropriate screening tools and notifies provider of findings.
* As part of a High-Reliability Organization reports actual and potential problems concerning patients families and associates using established reporting protocols for MedStar Health and/or work location. Participates in performance improvement initiatives to improve care quality and safety.
* Ensures ongoing compliance with regulatory accreditation and quality/safety standards by maintaining and auditing temperature logs ensuring medication supplies are current/unexpired checking and maintaining emergency equipment area free of clutter and other related tasks.
* Participates in population management activities including an awareness of the populations served and engages the patient in self-management support care/health goal setting pre-visit planning and the capturing of information that leads to health care improvement activities.
* Performs selected patient and laboratory testing consistent with the scope of the practice including but not limited to Point of Care Testing tuberculosis skin testing electrocardiography pulmonary function tests and vision and hearing testing (dependent upon provider and site requirements). Removes sutures/staples after the provider has examined the patient and written the appropriate order. Documents these activities in the patient's electronic medical record (EMR) or other venues based on policy.
* Documents clinically related activities accurately in the patient's EMR; performs required patient follow-up: to include pap smears Pb levels HIV mammograms and STD's. Collects and processes specimens completes requisitions and documents in logbook or other applicable forms/records.
* Provides escort for patients and assists with patient discharge activities. Provides chaperoning for patients per policy.
* Fulfills infection prevention and environmental responsibilities as assigned which many include: Light cleaning during clinic hours and cleaning of equipment. Updates appropriate records of scheduled equipment maintenance and manages drug and medical supply inventories.
* Provides telephone screening services to gather information from patients determine appropriate disposition and document per established telephone screening protocols.
* Under onsite provider supervision may insert intravenous catheter for physician initiated IV fluid therapy or administration of intravenous medications. Under direct onsite physician supervision may insert remove and monitor urinary catheter for procedures and prepare and administer oral drugs and injections limited to intradermal subcutaneous and intramuscular. May perform phlebotomy.
* Utilizes the EMR to propose patient medication refills for provider approval. Completes requisitions for tests (if applicable). Contacts insurance companies for Pre-authorizations for patient medications and specialty referrals including insurance authorization.
* Floats to other sites/locations within the system as appropriate and performs all duties at multiple sites.
* Attends scheduled meetings including but not limited to regular staff meetings and training classes for safety infection control OSHA CLIA BLS and others as required.
* Demonstrates behavior consistent with MedStar Health mission vision goals SPIRIT values objectives and patient care philosophy.

Minimal Qualifications
Education

* High School Diploma or GED required and
* Completion of an accredited Medical Assistant program preferred

Experience

* Less than 1 year 6 months experience working in an ambulatory care medical office or equivalent required. Externship in a medical or ambulatory health setting strongly preferred. Completed externship program at medstar health may be substituted for the 6 months experience in ambulatory care medical office. required and
* For Cardiology offices only: 6 months experience working in an ambulatory care medical office or equivalent required or Bachelor's degree in exercise physiology/science or related major or successful completion of a cardiac technician course. preferred and
* Prior experience as a medical assistant preferred

Licenses and Certifications

* Certified Medical Assistant (CMA)-AAMA by the American Association of Medical Assistants within 1 Year required or
* Registered Medical Assistant (RMA)-American Medical Technologists through American Medical Technologists or equivalent within 1 Year required
* CPR - Cardiac Pulmonary Resuscitation (includes BLS and NRP) for healthcare providers from either the American Heart Association (AHA) or American Red Cross within 90 Days required and
* Additional unit/specialty certifications may vary by department or business unit.

Knowledge Skills and Abilities

* Clinical competency as verified within 90-day orientation period and annually thereafter.
* Excellent customer service/patient interaction skills.
* Basic computer skills preferred.

Primary Duties and Responsibilities

  • In collaboration with the Director of Nursing, develops unit/department goals, objectives, policies, and procedures, and ensures compliance with hospital/entity policies and procedures, clinical practice guidelines, and regulatory and accreditation standards.
  • Develops and maintains effective relationships and partnerships across disciplines (e.g., medicine) and departments (e.g., environmental services) to ensure the delivery of efficient and quality patient care services. Contributes to the hospital/entity capacity management efforts; ensures unit activities and patient throughput proceed smoothly.
  • In collaboration with the Director of Nursing, develops standards of performance for associates, evaluates performance, and conducts performance management planning. Initiates or makes recommendations for personnel actions. Sets clear expectations for performance and holds associates accountable. Maintains ongoing communication with associates to review programs, discuss new developments, and exchange information.
  • Completes annual performance reviews of unit/department-based associates in a timely manner. Ensures the reviews reflect the individual associate's ability to meet performance expectations and beneficial ongoing developmental goals. Provides associates with ongoing feedback and champions their continued professional growth and development.
  • In the absence of the Director of Nursing, maintains communication with the Senior Director of Nursing and Patient Care Services, unit-based associates, Medical Director, providers, other nurse leaders, and personnel from other departments for the purpose of coordinating operations among the unit/department, clinical nursing division, and hospital/entity.
  • Contributes to the development, implementation, monitoring, and management of the unit/department-based budget and to support the organizational objectives, patient care standards, and quality of care. Demonstrates fiscal responsibility with day-to-day unit productivity and operations. Ensures availability of necessary materials, supplies, and equipment for safe and optimal patient care delivery.
  • Implements approaches and strategies that optimize patient care delivery and outcomes. Ensures effective utilization of the interdisciplinary model of care (IMOC) and associated standards of excellence. Rounds on patients during the shift for the purpose of engagement, satisfaction, and improvement in the care experience. Investigates and follows through on patient complaints and safety events.
  • Supports and promotes quality and patient safety initiatives and high reliability standards. Leads unit-based safety huddles. Escalates care delivery concerns to the Director of Nursing and other leaders as necessary and following the chain-of-command. Takes action to ensure optimal execution of the National Patient Safety Goals, nursing sensitive indicators/measures, regulatory requirements, and other identified quality metrics. Identifies and participates in performance improvement opportunities as appropriate and based on findings.
  • Collaborates with the Director of Nursing in the hiring, evaluation, promotion, and termination of personnel within the assigned unit/department, as needed. Initiates coaching and counseling of associates. Monitors and ensures appropriate staffing for unit(s).
  • Collaborates with other nurse leaders (Directors of Nursing, Directors of Clinical Nursing Informatics, Practice Innovation, Professional Development, and others) to ensure associate competencies. Identifies individual staff development needs and provides appropriate resources to meet needs.
  • Assists with developing unit-specific orientation of newly hired associates, and preceptor and charge/resource nurse programs. Plans and coordinates the assessment of unit-specific competencies for all nursing personnel within the unit/department. Supports the implementation of new programs/practices and helps design educational programs that ensure the highest quality care delivery and customer satisfaction.
  • Maintains continuing education files, competency assessment documentation, licensure, and specialty certifications for self and the associates within the unit/department.
  • Maintains and demonstrates a professional, patient-first atmosphere and an environment of coaching and development that supports shared decision making, interdisciplinary collaboration, and a high level of patient and associate satisfaction as evidenced by outcomes data. Provides shift-based clinical leadership through role modeling professional practice behaviors, proper delegation of activities, and management of the nursing team by maintaining staff accountability. Evaluates the need for and contributes to improvement in the professional practice environment.
  • Participates in hospital/entity committees, task forces, interdisciplinary forums, and projects (e.g., serious safety event reviews and performance improvement teams) at the request of Director of Nursing. Contributes to the achievement of Magnet Recognition or Pathways to Excellence program. Promotes a public image of professional nursing excellence and represents the hospital in community outreach efforts as appropriate.
  • Maintains knowledge of current trends and developments in the fields of nursing and health care through a variety of professional activities including, but not limited to, reading the appropriate literature, attending related seminars and conferences, and maintaining membership in professional nursing associations. Demonstrates accountability for own professional development and advancement.
  • Assumes administrative responsibilities in absence of the Director of Nursing and provides coverage for other colleagues.
  • Maintains clinical knowledge and skills and engages in the provision of direct care for a caseload of patients as required.



Minimum Qualifications
Education

  • Bachelor's degree in Nursing from a Nationally accredited program required and
  • Master's degree in Nursing or a health related field from a Nationally accredited program preferred


Experience

  • 3-4 years progressive nursing care experience required and
  • leadership and management experience preferred


Licenses and Certifications

  • RN - Registered Nurse - State Licensure and/or Compact State Licensure Valid in the State of Maryland or District of Columbia - jurisdiction is dependent on the entity of employment. Upon Hire required and
  • Specialty certification from a nationally recognized nursing organization in either a clinical specialty or Nursing Administration Upon Hire preferred and
  • CPR - Cardiac Pulmonary Resuscitation (includes BLS and NRP) for healthcare providers from either the American Heart Association (AHA) or American Red Cross within 90 Days required and
  • Additional unit/specialty certifications may vary by department or business unit.


Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Excellent problem-solving skills and ability to exercise independent judgment on complex situations. Verbal and written communication skills. Basic knowledge of various computer software applications and online learning applications, especially Microsoft PowerPoint and Excel.

Chief Advanced Practice Provider (APP) ? Cardiac Surgery First Assist

General Summary of Position

The Chief Advanced Practice Provider (APP) will work as a first or second assistant during open-heart and other vascular and thoracic surgical procedures under the direction of the attending physician. This provider will assist with the preoperative, intraoperative, and postoperative care of cardiac surgery patients within the operating room and serve as Chief APP for the Cardiac Surgery First Assist APP and Cardiac Surgical Assistant team.

Primary Duties and Responsibilities

Clinical Responsibilities:


  • Review and interpret patient charts, medical histories, and clinical imaging as part of preoperative planning.
  • Recognize and respond appropriately to abnormalities on electrocardiograms in the OR and ICU settings, assisting in the stabilization of arrhythmias and hemodynamic parameters.
  • Assist in the cardiac surgery operating room, including but not limited to:
    • Performing midline sternotomy.
    • Preparing patients for arterial and venous cannulation.
    • First-assisting on cases including coronary artery bypass grafting, valve repair/replacement (open and robotic), aortic arch repair, mechanical circulatory support, and heart transplantation.
    • Assisting in the percutaneous insertion of devices.
    • Harvesting and preparing conduits for CABG, including internal mammary artery, greater saphenous vein, and radial artery.
    • Placing epicardial pacing wires and mediastinal/pleural drains.
    • Closing the sternum.
    • Teaching and mentoring less experienced staff.

Leadership Responsibilities (Chief APP):

  • Supervise and coordinate work activities of APPs within the cardiac surgery service line to ensure efficient, high-quality patient care.
  • Oversee clinical, teaching, and research activities within the team.
  • Develop, implement, and monitor quality assurance and quality control programs; ensure clinical competencies are met.
  • Participate in recruitment, hiring, training, performance management, and?when necessary?disciplinary actions in coordination with the department?s leadership.
  • Ensure all APPs maintain appropriate licensure and certification; monitor and implement updates in regulatory requirements.
  • Organize onboarding, orientation, and continuing medical education programs for APP staff.
  • Stay current with advancements in cardiac surgery and patient care, communicating relevant updates to the team.
  • Coordinate preceptorships for students in accredited NP/RNFA or PA programs.
  • Facilitate process improvements and organizational changes to align with service line and system goals.
  • Maintain an active clinical practice as defined above.

Minimum Qualifications

Education:

  • Graduation from an accredited Physician Assistant program or Acute Care Nurse Practitioner program.
  • RN First Assistant certification required for Nurse Practitioners.

Experience:

  • Minimum of 5 years of cardiac surgery care experience preferred.
  • At least 2 years of operating room experience required.
  • 2 years of leadership or supervisory experience preferred.

Licenses and Certifications:

  • Current licensure as a Physician Assistant or Nurse Practitioner (with RNFA certification for NPs) in the District of Columbia required.
