Registered OB Sonographer – High-Risk Pregnancy (MFM)
Full-Time
We are seeking 4–5 Registered OB Sonographers to join our growing high-risk obstetrics (Maternal-Fetal Medicine) team. This is an excellent opportunity for experienced OB sonographers who are passionate about advanced prenatal imaging and interested in expanding their skills in MFM, including fetal echocardiography.
Our practice is committed to clinical excellence, supportive teamwork, and professional growth.
Required Qualifications
- ARDMS registered in OB/GYN
- Minimum 2 years of OB ultrasound experience
- MFM experience preferred, but not required
- Willingness to learn advanced MFM imaging, including fetal echocardiography
Clinical Experience
Qualified candidates should have experience performing:
- Detailed fetal anatomy scans
- Nuchal translucency (NT)
- Growth studies
- Biophysical profiles (BPP)
- Transvaginal cervical length
Fetal echocardiogram experience is a plus. Training will be provided for candidates who are eager to expand into this specialty area.
Scheduling & Locations
- Sonographers rotate between practice locations.
- Scheduling is thoughtfully arranged to keep team members as close to home as possible whenever feasible.
- Optional hospital rotation opportunities are available for those interested (not required).
Hospital Call Rotation (Optional – When Fully Staffed)
Day Shift:
- Monday–Friday
- 8:00 AM – 5:00 PM
- One-hour lunch break
On-Call Coverage:
- Weekdays: 5:00 PM – 8:00 AM
- Weekends: 24/7 coverage (Saturday–Sunday)
Call Structure:
- One week at a time
- Typically every 2.5–3 months when fully staffed
- Beeper pay provided during on-call weeks
- Minimum of 2 hours pay at time-and-a-half when called in, even if on-site less than two hours
Call Volume:
- Infrequent and limited
- Only MFM specialists can call in a sonographer
- No early first-trimester bleeding calls
- No overnight calls
- Most weekends and weekdays pass without call-ins

UNC MFM located in Raleigh or Vilcom is one of the largest maternal fetal medicine and obstetric imaging providers in the Triangle Area! We have opportunities to work across the triangle at one of 5 MFM clinical locations.
Hours: Sonographers work 40 hours per week.
Options are flexible to include 5 8-hr shifts or 4.4 9-hr shifts.
This position is eligible for our Incentive Program: Option 1: $25,000 3-year commitment incentive.
Option 2: $20,000 3-year commitment incentive plus relocation assistance.
* Commitment incentives are equal payments made every six (6) months from the start date during the three (3) year commitment.
This is an AIUM Certified Maternal Fetal Medicine Unit that cares for high risk pregnancies across the state of North Carolina, including patients that require specialty pregnancy and delivery planning services at a tertiary care referral center, advanced prenatal diagnostics, and advanced fetal care.

Summary: Responsible for the independent operation of diagnostic medical equipment to expose complex diagnostic conditions, and for performing and communicating results of diagnostic examinations for a variety of ob/gyn scanning procedures (fetal echo, fetal anomalies, high risk obsetrics).
Responsibilities: 1.
Assists the Maternal-Fetal Medicine physician in performing invasive diagnostic procedures.
Provides support in the standardization and training of physician learners during invasive procedures and other diagnostic imaging examinations.
2.
Consults with the patient and assesses for potential contraindications—such as medication use, insufficient preparation, or the patient's inability or unwillingness to tolerate the procedure.
3.
Performs the ultrasound procedure under general or direct supervision, as defined by the procedure and/or physician.
Performs essential maternal-fetal ultrasound examinations, such as; detailed anatomical evaluation, complete fetal echocardiogram, growth assessment, fetal wellbeing (to include biophysical profiles, maternal/fetal Doppler, amniotic fluid assessments), needle procedure guidance, examinations of maternal pelvic anatomy (including transvaginal cervical assessment) and advanced diagnostic 3D/4D techniques.

Conducts comprehensive diagnostic sonograms and records anatomical, pathological and/or physiological data for interpretation by a Maternal-Fetal Medicine specialist.
5.
Assists the supervising physician with invasive procedures as needed.
Continuously evaluates sonographic findings throughout the examination to ensure a thorough and comprehensive study, providing the physician with complete and clinically relevant diagnostic information.
6.
Recognizes situations or abnormalities that require the direct observation of the real-time imaging by a Maternal-Fetal Medicine specialist.
7.
Utilizes pulse-wave and color/power Doppler to obtain vascular and spectral Doppler waveforms for interpretation by a Maternal-Fetal Medicine specialist 8.
Advises Maternal-Fetal Medicine specialists and/or referring OB provider, if directed, of examination findings, including a preliminary report of findings observed during a diagnostic sonographic evaluation.
Other Information Other information: Education Requirements: ● Completion of a CAAHEP-accredited education program in Diagnostic Medical Sonography / General Ultrasound or equivalent certificate program is required.

Key Responsibilities:
- Specialized Imaging: Perform comprehensive obstetric and gynecological ultrasound examinations in a Maternal Fetal Medicine setting, including advanced fetal anatomy surveys, biophysical profiles, amniotic fluid assessment, and placental evaluations.
- Patient Care: Explain procedures to patients, ensure they are relaxed and at ease during the exam, and provide compassionate care while obtaining diagnostic quality images.
- Technical Expertise: Operate and maintain ultrasound equipment, ensuring proper functionality and image quality. Adhere to infection control and safety protocols.
- Fetal Assessments: Perform specialized fetal assessments including Fetal Echocardiography (FE) and Nuchal Translucency (NT) screenings (certification to be obtained within 1 year of hire if not already certified).
- Documentation: Maintain accurate records of procedures and patient information in compliance with regulatory standards.
- Team Collaboration: Work closely with MFM physicians, radiologists, and other healthcare team members to ensure seamless patient care and accurate diagnostic results.
Key Requirements and Technology Experience:
- Skills-Current ARDMS certification in OB/GYN (RDMS-OB) or Abdomen (RDMS-AB), or ARRT(S) certification
- Current BLS certification
- Experience in OB/GYN or Maternal Fetal Medicine sonography
- Strong technical and patient care skills
- Education: Graduate of an accredited Sonography Program.
- Experience: Less than 1 year of experience required; new graduates are encouraged to apply.
- Certification/Licensure: Must hold one of the following certifications at time of hire:
- RDMS-OB (Registered Diagnostic Medical Sonographer - OB/GYN) through ARDMS
- RDMS-AB (Registered Diagnostic Medical Sonographer - Abdomen) through ARDMS
