The Cardiac Device Nurse plays a critical role in the comprehensive care of patients with implanted cardiac devices, including pacemakers, implantable cardioverter-defibrillators (ICDs), and insertable cardiac monitors (ICMs). This position involves direct patient care, device interrogation and programming, patient education, and collaboration with cardiologists and other healthcare professionals to optimize patient outcomes. The ideal candidate will possess specialized knowledge in cardiac electrophysiology and a strong commitment to patient safety and education.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Device Interrogation and Programming:
    • Perform in-person and remote interrogations of pacemakers, ICDs, and ICMs according to established protocols and physician orders.
    • Analyze device data, including electrograms, trends, and diagnostic information, to identify arrhythmias, lead issues, and device malfunctions.
    • Program devices based on physician orders and patient needs, ensuring optimal device function and appropriate therapy delivery.
    • Document all device interrogations, programming changes, and patient responses accurately and thoroughly in the electronic health record (EHR).
  • Patient Education and Support:
    • Provide comprehensive education to patients and their families regarding their cardiac device, including its function, potential alarms, lifestyle modifications, follow-up schedules, and emergency protocols.
    • Address patient questions and concerns with empathy and clarity.
    • Monitor patient symptoms and device performance, providing guidance and escalating issues to the physician as needed.
  • Clinic Operations:
    • Schedule and coordinate in-person and remote device follow-up appointments.
    • Manage device alerts and transmissions from remote monitoring systems, triaging and escalating urgent findings to the cardiologist.
    • Assist with device recalls and advisories, ensuring timely patient notification and appropriate action.
    • Maintain device clinic equipment and inventory.
    • Collaborate with device company representatives for technical support, education, and access to new technologies.
  • Collaboration and Communication:
    • Work closely with cardiologists, electrophysiologists, medical assistants, and other clinic staff to ensure coordinated and efficient patient care.
    • Communicate effectively with patients, families, and healthcare team members.
    • Participate in team meetings, quality improvement initiatives, and continuing education pertinent to cardiac device management.
  • Documentation and Compliance:
    • Maintain accurate, complete, and timely documentation of all patient encounters, device data, and communications in the EHR, adhering to clinic policies and regulatory standards.
    • Ensure compliance with all relevant policies, procedures, and regulatory requirements (e.g., HIPAA, JCAHO).

Qualifications:

  • Education: Graduate of an accredited school of nursing (BSN Preferred)
  • Licensure: Current, unencumbered Registered Nurse (RN) license in Iowa
  • Experience: Minimum of 2 years of clinical nursing experience, with at least 1 year specifically in cardiac device management (pacemakers, ICDs, ICMs) in a clinic or hospital setting.
  • Certifications:
    • Basic Life Support (BLS) certification required.
    • Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support (ACLS) certification preferred.

3. Operational Leadership

· Utilizes scheduling software for case requests and block releases

· Optimizes OR utilization through effective schedule management

· Coordinates with surgeons and their offices to ensure accurate scheduling

· Manages add-on cases and schedule changes with minimal disruption

· Represents the service line in cross-functional meetings

· Participates in interviewing potential team members as needed

· Leads daily department huddles to enhance communication and address immediate concerns

· Identifies inefficiencies and proposes practical solutions

· Supports data-driven decision making within the service line

4. Technical Responsibilities

· Facilitates updates and changes on surgeon preference cards to ensure accuracy

· Ensures that specialized equipment and supplies are available for assigned cases

· Manages supplies related to service line operations

· Maintains proficiency with electronic medical records and scheduling systems

· Supports special projects and initiatives as directed by leadership

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

1. Possession of a current or compact state license as a registered nurse issued/defined by the State of Iowa.

2. Two years’ experience as an operating room nurse required.

3. Basic Life Support certified within six (6) weeks of hire. The acceptable credentialing body is the American Heart Association.

4. Proof of completion of Mandatory Reporter abuse training specific to population served within three (3) months of hire.

5. Ability to read, write and speak English language.

6. Strong interpersonal skills with staff, management and physicians required.

7. Ability to maintain a high standard of courtesy and cooperation in dealing with co-workers, patients and visitors, and perform job functions satisfactorily despite the stress of a hospital work environment.

8. Adaptability to performing a variety of duties, often changing from one task to another without loss of efficiency or composure.

9. Ability to function independently when appropriate.

10. Adaptability to situations involving precise attainment of set limits and standards.

PHYSICAL AND MENTAL REQUIREMENTS AND WORKING CONDITIONS

1. PHYSICAL ACTIVITY REQUIREMENTS: (Constant = 67-100% of workday, Frequent = 34-66% of workday, Occasional = 33% or less of workday)

· CONSTANT

o Talking and Hearing: While exchanging information through oral communication, both by phone and in person.

o Standing: While starting IVs.

o Walking: Usually for short distances at normal rate of speed.

o Grasping and Fingering: While starting IVs.

· FREQUENT

o Stooping, reaching, and lifting: While starting IVs, assembling supplies, etc.

· OCCASIONAL

o Lifting: While moving supplies or while assisting in patient care.

2. PHYSICAL DEMAND REQUIREMENTS:

· If a patient is unable to function independently, a mechanical/assistive device and/or additional personnel must be utilized. If an object requires lifting > 50 lbs., additional equipment/personnel must also be utilized.

· Heavy work: Exerting up to 65 lbs. push/pull (force to move frequently, and lifting up to 50 lbs. occasionally, and lifting up to 40 lbs. frequently, and lifting up to 20 lbs. constantly, to move patient and/or objects.

3. VISUAL ACUITY REQUIREMENTS:

· Ability to read and prepare written documentation.

· Ability to identify IV solutions, medications, etc.

· Ability to utilize computer terminal.

4. EQUIPMENT/TOOLS:

· Standard medical and nursing equipment, special equipment or office equipment found in the assigned area.

5. WORKING CONDITIONS:

· The worker is subject to inside environmental conditions.

· Colleagues in this job classification have been identified as having the likelihood of occupational exposure to blood or other potentially infectious materials, therefore, are included in the OSHA Exposure Control Plan with all its specifications for preventing contact with the above materials.

Clinic

As a Clinic RN Navigator  at MercyOne, you will work collaboratively with physicians, staff and other health care professionals, to develop, implement, and evaluate, integrated and comprehensive plans of care for patients.  Ensures best practice and high quality standards of health care are maintained across the continuum.

Schedule:

  • Full time 40 hours a week
  • M-F 7a-4:30p

General Requirements:

Develop, implement, and evaluate clinical practice guidelines/care paths for patients.

  • Collaborate with all of the health care team, to assist in the provision of quality patient care, and facilitate the identification of potential care problems.
  • Assist as a liaison with patients and their families to physicians, staff, and other health care professionals, to coordinate patient care across all settings, and ensure high quality outcomes.
  • Welcome calls from patients and families, answering questions concerning care, and follow-up as necessary.
  • Proactively act as a patient advocate, working to overcome patient barriers, and resolve concerns.
  • Provide educational information and resources to patients, to assist patients and family with coping, and foster self-care activities.
  • Review literature, methodology, outcomes, and implications of nursing/medical research, and disseminate findings.
  • Establish and maintain a knowledge base of on-going clinical research activities.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Education:

  • Graduate of an accredited school of nursing program required.
  • BSN preferred.
  • Current/valid RN license from the state licensing board required.
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) for the Healthcare Provider certified or obtained within three (3) months of hire.
