Boeing’s Phantom Works is seeking an AC5 Chief Engineer – Phantom Works

The AC5 Chief Engineer will lead the technical direction and engineering personnel of the Advanced Communications, Computing, Cyber, Command and Control (AC5) portfolio within the Phantom Works Tech Base division. The position will direct the AC5 Thrust leads in setting technical strategies and roadmaps for air and space technology development, and report to the Phantom Works Systems Engineering Capability Leader.

You will lead an IPT spanning multiple functions including supply chain, IP&S, Quality / Supplier Quality, Production Engineering, Design Eng, Liaison Eng, Operations, and Materials & Processes to develop software and hardware prototypes conducting command and control across air, space, maritime, and land domains. You will provide technical direction over AC5’s sub-portfolios of advanced command and control, advanced mission planning, advanced communications, and advanced computing. Additionally, you will be Phantom Works’ multi-domain advocate across the BDS divisions, providing education and alignment on the DAF’s Battle Network, DON’s Project Overmatch, DOA’s Project Convergence, and USSF’s KRONOS. 

This role is an excellent opportunity to further develop your leadership and visioning skills as you will set and lead a team in successful execution of a long-term long range kill chain objectives. You will gain valuable experience working with the various functions who all support production of major aircraft assemblies as well as interacting with and managing large external suppliers. You will be called upon to brief and provide status to program executive leadership team, DoD, and Service customers.

Your initial responsibilities will be to execute programs within the IPT, lay out a growth plan, lead program make/buy decisions, and provide technical direction to the overall programs.

Position Responsibilities:

  • Integrate air and space platforms into Department‑level system‑of‑systems architectures across the DAF, Navy, and Army
  • Define and execute systems engineering strategy, technical roadmaps, and integrated plans that advance program milestones and TRLs
  • Advocate for R&D and IRAD investments to advance Boeing’s discriminator technologies
  • Provide technical direction and leadership for a team of ~75 engineers across multiple programs
  • Oversee supplier technical performance and ensure engineering artifacts meet Boeing and customer standards

As an Integral Fuel Tank Sealer, you will be essential in maintaining the highest standards of quality and safety during the sealing and assembly processes. Utilizing detailed installation plans and specifications, you will prepare tank surfaces, load sealing equipment, and apply sealants and topcoats according to established guidelines. Conducting thorough inspections and shakedowns of work areas prior to tank closure will ensure that any damaged seals or components are repaired and that all systems are functioning correctly. You will also assist with pressure testing operations and perform functional tests on fuel vent systems to identify and address any leaks. Your attention to detail will be critical in determining the appropriate sealing compounds and methods for each task, ensuring compliance. Please note that this role involves working in tight spaces, including entering the wing through a 9.5”X17.7" opening; therefore, comfort with confined spaces is essential for success in this position.

Position Responsibilities:

  • Obtain daily work assignments from the lead or supervisor and review relevant Installation Plans (IP) and Shop Order Instants (SOI) to determine the work area.

  • Gather necessary sealants, solvents, cleaners, and wipers from the designated storage area.

  • Install ventilation equipment as required to ensure proper airflow in the work cavity.

  • Clean tank surfaces using appropriate solvents or detergents, ensuring they are wiped dry.

  • Clean and adjust sealing equipment to ensure proper functionality.

  • Load sealing guns and apply sealant and/or topcoat per BAC specifications, including fillet seals to system components and sealing heads and collars of fasteners.

  • Perform a shake-down of work areas prior to tank closure to repair any damaged seals or components and prepare for inspection.

  • Apply wing station identification numbers on tank doors using stencils and spray paint as required.

  • Install fuel tank closure panels or access doors after all necessary steps are complete and accepted by quality assurance.

  • Assist with pressure testing operations and perform functional tests on fuel vent systems and tank cavities to determine if leaks exist.

  • Submit completed jobs or in-process checks to inspectors for acceptance or rejection.

  • Determine proper sealing compounds, sequence of work, and method of application to accomplish assignments.

  • Apply aerodynamic seals to skin gaps on leading and trailing edge panels as required.

  • Position tools for locating vortex generators and apply faying surface seals as needed.

  • Maintain personal and tool certifications, ensuring compliance with operational standards, and contact supervisors for assistance when needed.

Physical Demands and Potential Hazards:

  • Perform physical tasks that include lifting weights ranging from 10-15 lbs to 15-35 lbs.

  • Engage in various movements such as reaching, handling, turning, twisting, lifting, lowering, climbing, balancing, bending, kneeling, crouching, and squatting.

Boeing Defense, Space & Security (BDS) Mobility, Surveillance & Bombers (MS&B) KC-46 Tanker Program is seeking a highly motivated, dynamic, and inclusive First Line Communications and Navigations Engineering Manager to lead the Communications and Navigations Systems team from either Tukwila, WA or Everett, WA .

This is an exciting time in the program as we partner with our US Air Force customer for enhanced mission systems upgrades as well as new international customers to grow the business. In this role you will be responsible for the engineering management of an integrated communication suite and aircraft navigations subsystem of electronics hardware. Leadership responsibilities will include management of the engineering team responsible for all aspects of the avionics hardware, including the design/architecture, integration, lab/aircraft testing, airworthiness certification, new business proposals, and supplier technical management. In addition, you will be in charge of managing the financial labor and material budgets as the Control Account Manager (CAM) for the team.

The Boeing KC-46 “Pegasus” is the new US Air Force aerial refueling tanker aircraft designed to support multi-role missions including refueling, cargo/passenger transport, and medevac airlift. The KC-46 is a military commercial derivative aircraft based on the Boeing 767-2C aircraft and modified per US Air Force specifications for the primary mission of aerial refueling US and Allied aircraft. The KC-46 accomplishes this refueling mission using either the Hose & Drogue or the Boom systems, which are capable of transferring fuel at rates of 400 or 1,200 gallons per minute, respectively. The KC-46 is also equipped with a suite of tactical situational awareness systems and self-defensive systems that allow the aircraft to provide closer support to combat aircraft when performing missions.

This position will report to the KC-46 Mission Systems Avionics (MSA) Senior Manager and will represent the Communications and Navigation Systems team for the KC-46 Tanker Program.

Position Responsibilities:

  • Provide leadership, project management, and technical guidance to the engineering teams responsible for the system design/architecture, airworthiness certification, technical supplier management, production & fleet sustainment support, and RCCA investigations.
  • Control Account Manager (CAM) for the team; responsible for ensuring up to date staffing forecasts, proper employee charging, and that costs and schedules remain on plan.
