We are a 38 bed surgical unit with a goal of providing excellent care to all of our patients. Our average nurse to patient ratio is 1:4. Acute Care Medicine manage patients with a full range of clinical issues-from significant blood dyscrasias, advanced endocrine pathology, heart and renal failure, GI conditions, infectious diseases, asthma, cystic fibrosis¿and a multitude of other conditions and diseases.¿ Because of our patient acuity, we provide advanced training to bring new nurses to the highest level of functioning.¿Each unit is lead by a clinical manager and lead charge nurse.¿ The unit is supported by an advanced practice nurse.¿ Additionally each unit is assigned a case manager, social worker, physical therapist, dietitian, and pharmacist.¿ This multidisciplinary team works in conjunction with the physicians, nurses and patient care technicians to provide quality patient care.

Divisions 6400 & 6500 are a combined trauma, geriatric trauma, and acute care surgery nursing division. We have a combined bed capacity of 63 patients. Our nurses specialize in the care of patients who have experienced a variety of traumatic injuries including motor vehicle accidents, gunshot wounds, stab injuries, traumatic amputations, fall injuries, burns, fractures, spinal cord injuries, and traumatic brain injuries.
We also provide care to acute care surgery patients, which are patients who are admitted oftentimes from the emergency department with diagnoses such as small bowel obstruction, acute hernia, appendicitis, etc.

The Surgical Services Department provides pre-op and post-op inpatient care to those patients undergoing specialty surgical procedures in the areas of abdominal solid organ transplant, vascular surgery, hepatobiliary, trauma, ear-nose and throat, orthopedic, colo-rectal, urology and other general surgical procedures. Inpatient care in this department focuses on pre-op needs, post-op care and treatment after phase I recovery through discharge from an inpatient nursing division. The department's surgical observation unit and ICU provide intensive care and treatment to those post-op or post-traumatic patients whose condition requires treatment at this level.

Overview
Barnes-Jewish Hospital at Washington University Medical Center is the largest hospital in Missouri and is ranked as one of the nation's top hospitals by U.S. News & World Report. The Cardiac stepdown division (7200) supports the care continuum for post-surgical cardiac patients. The team provides specialized acute care in a fast-paced environment.¿ It is recognized as a Center of Excellence by the Joint Commission for left ventricular assist device implantation and management and care of the patient after heart transplantation surgery.¿ Nurses in this environment possess strong critical thinking skills and are able to make autonomous decisions.¿ Nurses also have the opportunity to be involved in the patient's progress from the immediate post-op period all the way through discharge.¿ The staff in this unit demonstrates a true passion for nursing and joy for their work.
Preferred Qualifications
Role Purpose
Provides direct patient care activities including assessment, diagnosis, planning implementation, and evaluation within the guidelines of the standards of nursing care.
Responsibilities
- Promotes patient and family centered care in a healing environment. Educates patients and their families on how to manage their illness or injury, including post treatment home care needs and medication administration.
- Participates in activities that promote patient safety, quality and regulatory compliance. Participates in professional development.
- Develops, implements, and documents individual plans of care with defined goals in collaboration with other members of the interprofessional team and patient, family or caregiver in accordance with the established guidelines and standards of nursing care. Proactively plans and ensures communication of the plan of care across the continuum of care.
- Uses critical nursing skills to assess and evaluate physical, psychosocial, and emotional needs according to standards of care. Assess patient preferences and barriers to involvement in care, including their values, emotional, spiritual, cultural, and population-specific needs.
- BJC has determined this is a safety-sensitive position. The ability to work in a constant state of alertness and in a safe manner is an essential function of this job.
