Summary:

The unit is a 22-bed Neuro/Surgical ICU, with neuro being the primary focus. We admit a vast array of patients including Strokes with and without TNK administration, head trauma, craniotomies, aneurysm repairs, ICP monitoring, EVD placement/monitoring, and organ procurement. From a surgical standpoint, we care for all patients out of PACU (GI, ORTHO, SPINAL, etc.) with exception to any open hearts. We also admit medical ICU patients and on occasion will take overflow cardiac patients. The floor often has many bedside procedures; chest tube, bronchoscopy, and EGD, to name a few. We have great teamwork and a family atmosphere.

8NT is a 36-bed unit with a focus on Neuro Telemetry and Neuro Surgical Services. The primary patient population is composed of stroke, brain, and spinal conditions that range from; seizures, brain aneurysm, laminectomy, cervical fusion, stable craniotomy mechanical thrombectomy after 24 hours of ICU recovery. We have a strong working relationship with our neurosurgeons and neurologists who provide education and guidance to help enhance our nursing care. We pride ourselves on our TJC Comprehensive Level 1 Stroke Certification. We strive to maintain a culture of teamwork and quality. 6NTis a36 - private bed unit specializing in cardiac care for patients who have had open heart surgery. We see cardiovascular/thoracic patients that are post-CABG, heart caths, valve replacements, thoracotomies, and many other cardiothoracic surgical procedures. We also see general medical-surgical patients that may have a primary cardiac diagnosis or history with comorbidities that may need telemetry monitoring, as well as those patients needing critical cardiac drips. On 6NT, we train our staff to detect medical issues before they become a problem, so they can respond to those emergent situations quickly and confidently. We have many opportunities for assessments, patient/family teaching, IVs, wound care, lab value analysis and medication administration/ management. We encourage communication and collaboration in an environment that is engaging and rewarding for our health care professionals, as well the patients on our unit.

A9 is a 27-bed unit with an emphasis on the neurological, thoracic, abdominal, and orthopedic trauma patient. The unit is the designated stroke overflow unit for CHRISTUS Spohn. As a nurse on this fast-paced unit, you can expect to work with a diverse, highly collaborative team of physicians, advanced practitioners, RNs, LVNs, Therapists, RRTs, and ancillary staff. We are a unit that values teamwork above all.
