Our Group is also responsible for managing the Hawaii Island Family Medicine Residency program that trains new family medicine physicians.

Job Description

Summary:

We are seeking a skilled and compassionate Advanced Practice Provider (APP) to join our Gastroenterology team. As an integral member of our healthcare team, the successful candidate will provide comprehensive primary care services to patients of all ages under the supervision of our experienced physicians. This position offers an exciting opportunity to deliver high-quality care, collaborate with interdisciplinary teams, and contribute to the well-being of our diverse patient population.

Responsibilities:

  • Evaluate and manage GI/hepatobiliary conditions in clinic, endoscopy, and consult settings; perform focused GI histories/physical exams and risk stratification.
  • Order, perform, and interpret GI diagnostics (labs, stool tests, H. pylori/SIBO, imaging, gastric emptying, pH-impedance, manometry) to establish diagnoses.
  • Develop evidence-based treatment plans for GERD, dyspepsia, IBS/IBD, celiac disease, pancreatitis, biliary disease, NAFLD/NASH, hepatitis, cirrhosis/portal hypertension, and GI bleeding risk.
  • Manage medications?including PPIs, H. pylori regimens, 5-ASA, steroids, immunomodulators, biologics/small molecules?with safety labs, vaccination/infection screening, and monitoring.
  • Provide pre-/post-procedure care for endoscopy; assist during procedures and, where privileged, perform limited APP-scoped procedures and moderate sedation per policy.
  • Triage urgent GI complaints (e.g., suspected GI bleed, severe IBD flare, acute pancreatitis); coordinate ED transfers/direct admissions and initiate stabilization.
  • Lead chronic liver disease management: HCC surveillance, variceal screening, ascites/HE protocols, antiviral therapy coordination, and transplant referrals as appropriate.
  • Communicate pathology/procedure results, set evidence-based surveillance intervals, and close diagnostic loops.
  • Educate patients on bowel prep, GERD lifestyle measures, low-FODMAP/liver-friendly nutrition, biologic safety, and self-management.
  • Document accurately in the EHR with appropriate coding; contribute to GI quality/safety initiatives and maintain required licensure/privileges while collaborating closely with the multidisciplinary team.

Education Requirements:

  • Master's degree or higher in Nursing (MSN) or Physician Assistant Studies (MPAS) from an accredited program
  • Current national certification as a Nurse Practitioner (NP) or Physician Assistant (PA)
  • State licensure as an Advanced Practice Registered Nurse (APRN) or Physician Assistant (PA-C) with prescriptive authority

Licensure Requirement: Candidates must hold an unrestricted license to practice in the state of Hawaii, DEA, and Hawaii Controlled Substance
