Director of Datacenter Construction
Job Description
Location: Austin, TX Area (On-Site)
Position Type: Full-Time
Reports To: Executive Infrastructure Leadership
Key Responsibilities:
Strategic Planning & Technical Leadership
- Lead master planning for a 50MW campus optimized for 50kW–100kW+ per rack density
- Serve as design authority across MEP systems supporting high-density AI compute
- Architect cooling strategies including Direct-to-Chip (DLC) and rear-door heat exchanger (RDHx) solutions
- Define redundancy models (N+1, 2N) aligned to inference SLAs and total cost of ownership targets
Construction & Project Delivery
- Select and oversee EPC partners, GCs, and specialty subcontractors
- Own capital budget ($100M+ range) and master project schedule
- Drive critical path milestones to achieve “first packet” delivery
- Develop procurement strategies for long-lead equipment (switchgear, generators, chillers, CDUs, MV gear)
- Mitigate supply chain risk across key infrastructure components
Power & Thermal Infrastructure
- Lead utility coordination and substation development to ramp capacity to 50MW
- Oversee implementation of advanced liquid cooling loops for next-generation GPUs/TPUs
- Deliver PUE targets below 1.2
Compliance & Risk Management
- Ensure adherence to building codes, environmental regulations, and safety standards
- Maintain rigorous on-site safety culture and HSE compliance
Qualifications:
Experience
- 10+ years in mission-critical data center construction
- 3+ years in leadership delivering projects exceeding 20MW
- Proven experience with high-density compute environments (AI, HPC, crypto, or similar)
- Direct experience implementing liquid cooling infrastructure (required)
Technical Expertise
- Strong command of medium-voltage electrical distribution
- Deep understanding of large-scale mechanical cooling systems and thermodynamics
- Experience operating within hyperscale or advanced compute environments
Financial & Operational Acumen
- Managed CAPEX programs exceeding $100M
- Strong commercial negotiation skills with EPCs and equipment vendors
- Ability to manage complex on-site engineering challenges under aggressive timelines
Education
- Bachelor’s degree in Engineering or Construction Management
- PE or PMP strongly preferred
