As a Principal System Safety Engineer, you will be accountable for the establishment and execution of the major safety programs.  The Safety Lead is a technical expert in missile safety as well as a project manager who establishes and monitors safety program execution, leads program safety teams, and interfaces with program & functional leadership.  This requires advanced application of MIL-STD 882E for System Safety (hardware, software, firmware, and personnel) for DoD Missile systems, typically obtained through advanced education combined with experience as well as project management experience and leadership.  Location: Huntsville, AL

What You Will Do

This is an exciting opportunity for a highly motivated Principal System Safety Engineer to join us onsite in Huntsville, AL, as a Safety Lead with proven experience in executing all aspects of system safety.

  • Practical application of project management skills: 

    • Create/update the strategy for the program to meet all its milestones with system safety features integrated into the product in compliance with contract and awarded funding.  

    • Create a schedule and integrate safety tasks and activities into program Integrated Master Schedule (IMS). 

    • Plan/manage the safety program effort within the Program IMS. 

    • Understanding of the safety budget and tasking through close coordination with the responsible CAM / IPTL / product owner, including EACs. 

    • Mentor junior safety engineers.    

    • Remove barriers impacting team members. 

  • Actively engage in engineering review boards, and configuration control boards to stay on top of design changes, and assess impacts to the established safety program.  

  • Establish on-going feedback loop with functional and program management.  

  • Lead & coordinate System Safety Working Group(s) between key Raytheon and Customer representatives.

  •  Escalate risks to the appropriate level and follow through on corrective actions.  

  • Interpret system requirements, customer specifications and military standards, so as to recommend compliance strategies to program leadership: Chief Engineer, Program Manager, Integrated Product Team Lead, etc. 

  • Collaborate with stakeholders across a range of engineering functions to identify and mitigate risks: Systems Engineering, Software Engineering, Firmware Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Hardware Engineering, Environmental Safety, & Health, Human Systems Interfaces, Test Engineering.  

  • Manage safety related interactions with suppliers and/or subcontractors.   

  • Innovate better safety solutions.  

  • Identify best practices to improve overall safety culture at Raytheon.  

  • Understand and shape system safety/Human System Interfaces postures across the lifecycle (design, integration/ test, flight test, production, field, returns). 

Qualifications You Must Have

  • Typically requires a degree in Science, Technology, Engineering or Mathematics (STEM) and a minimum of 8 years of prior relevant experience.

  • Experience developing and implementing MIL-STD-882E System Safety Program tasks and analyses, involving management (task series 100), analysis (task series 200), evaluation (task series 300), and verification (task series 400).  This includes hardware and software safety related tasks. 

  • Experience with presentation skills to brief safety status to safety approval authority at technical reviews, safety review boards, and others as part of the safety approval process.  

  • Experience managing a safety program.

  • Experience collaborating with stakeholders across a range of engineering functions to identify and mitigate risks.

  • The ability to obtain and maintain a Secret U.S. government issued security clearance is required. U.S. citizenship is required, as only U.S. citizens are eligible for the required security clearance.

Qualifications We Prefer

  • An active and transferable Secret U.S. government issued security clearance.

The Mechanical Engineering (ME) organization leads in mechanical hardware design, development, as well as production using state-of the-art tools, processes, technology, and Six Sigma principles. The Shipboard Effectors Department is currently searching for an experienced Mechanical Design Engineer II to work on a multi-discipline team to support the production of Shipboard Effectors products and subsystems located in Huntsville, AL.

This is an onsite role with regular support required in a production missile integration facility.

This position requires strong communication skills to collaborate across Engineering, Operations, Supply Chain, and Quality.  Experience with hardware integration and test, supplier first article inspections, production work instructions and failure investigation principals are strongly desired.

Candidate will work closely with Integrated Product Team Leads/Program Managers to ensure that engineering requirements are defined, risks are managed, and schedules/budgets are met. Candidate will ensure Technical Data Packages are maintained and updated as necessary. Decisions must be data driven in nature and require preparing technical justification analysis reports as well as presenting to a variety of Engineering Review Boards.

What You Will Do

  • Contribute to finding solutions to a wide range of technical problems related to the design, manufacture, integration, and production sustainment of various mechanical subsystems, including support in the engineering lab and the factory floor both at Raytheon and at suppliers
  • Support first article inspections, work instruction reviews, material dispositions, and root cause investigations for production issues. Decisions are data driven and require preparing technical justification analysis reports and presenting to a variety of Engineering Review Boards
  • Perform mechanical design, development, and documentation of components, subassemblies, and end items for defense system equipment in accordance with system requirements
  • Interface with other engineering disciplines, non-technical disciplines, and suppliers to develop design solutions and resolve technical issues
  • Regular onsite support at Missile Integration Facility
  • Periodic travel to suppliers or other program sites will be required (10-15%)

Qualifications You Must Have

  • Master of Science Degree in Mechanical Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, or similar Engineering discipline
  • This position requires 12 months or less of relevant professional work experience (excluding internships)
  • Experience with 3D CAD tools (modeling and drawing)

What You Will Do

The Effector Guidance Electronics Department  designs digital electronic circuit cards and electronic units which are supported from proposal through transition to production. Our systems are subject to environments ranging from the frigid, sub-zero vacuum of space to the blistering heat of the desert floor, to the high pressures of the ocean depths.

The Senior Principal Electrical Engineer  is responsible for the design, analysis, simulation, test, and integration of digital electronic modules and/or CCAs for missile applications. The candidate should be experienced in all aspects of circuit card design including hardware designs with processors, FPGAs, memory, and industry interfaces, such as PCIe, Ethernet, I2C, SPI, and UART. 

This position is 100% ONSITE in Huntsville, Alabama.

Qualifications You Must Have

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Electrical Engineering, Electrical Engineering Technology or Computer Engineering.

  • Minimum of ten (10) years engineering digital circuit design experience

  • Design and develop fixtures, tooling, and gages using Solidworks as the primary CAD system, using best practices including DFM, DFA, DTC and stack analysis.  May include the design and development of engineering and production test fixtures.   A portion of this effort will require a working knowledge of AutoCad.
  • Define the product configuration and part geometry in fully dimensioned 2-D drawings directly linked to 3-D files for each manufacturing operation.  A solid understanding of GD&T is a must.
  • Manage Bill of Materials, including a full definition of material selection and raw material configuration.  
  • Ensure proper documentation of design revisions for the full Technical Data Package including CAD, BOM, engineering masters, routings, etc.
  • Initiate and participate in cross-functional design reviews to ensure new designs are optimized for manufacturability.  Support the development and execution of project timelines.
  • Provide technical input to Applications Engineering in support of process improvements to streamline the process from Design to finish product. 
  • Provide manufacturing floor support processing issues and promote continuous improvement initiatives.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES



  • Under limited supervision, designs, fabricates, repairs, and improves tools, jigs, fixtures, simple molds, gauges and dies to the tolerances required for the intended manufacturing processes.
  • Must be able to work from engineering drawings, sketches, or other written or oral instructions as well as tool design drawings.
  • Maintain, Tooling, Fixturing, Materials, CNC programs in a systematic way to ensure proper execution of processes.

  • Ensure safe and timely execution of projects during plant shutdowns, outages, and turnarounds, managing safety priorities under tight timelines without compromising quality or compliance standards.
  • Conduct safety audits, incident investigations, and root cause analyses to prevent recurrence of safety events and improve program effectiveness.
  • Collaborate with Project Managers, Superintendents, and Field Craft personnel to ensure safe execution of maintenance, repair, and new construction projects.
  • Monitor and report on safety performance metrics, including OSHA recordables, lost-time incidents, and near-miss events.
  • Build strong relationships with field crews to promote personal ownership of safety culture through education, onsite toolbox meetings, and open communication.
  • Ensure all personnel, including contractors, are trained and compliant with site-specific safety requirements and company standards.
  • Travel up to 50% to project sites primarily located in Southeast and South Central US.


Qualifications & Experience Required:


  • BS/BA in Construction Management, Engineering, Occupational Safety, or a related technical field. Advanced degrees preferred.
  • Advanced Safety certifications (CSP, CHST) are a plus, but not required.
  • 10–15 years of Safety Program leadership in Heavy Industrial, Construction Management, Mechanical Contracting, or Industrial Cleaning, with hands-on experience planning and executing maintenance/repair projects during plant shutdowns, outages, and turnarounds.
  • Experience in Pulp and Paper mills or similar industrial settings is strongly preferred.
  • Proven track record of leading Safety programs, building Safety cultures, and achieving measurable Safety improvements.
  • Strong knowledge of OSHA standards, safety regulations, and industrial construction practices.
  • Experience managing and developing Safety teams, including field-based personnel and contractors.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills, with the ability to build rapport with field crews, supervisors, and corporate leadership.
  • Comfortable using online training portals (e.g., ISN, TappiSafe, Cognabox) and managing digital compliance tracking.
  • Willingness to travel 50% overnight and reside in/near Central AL corporate HQ.
