West Physics has an immediate opening for an experienced Health Physicist/Radiation Safety Officer based in Mobile, AL. This position requires a solid educational background in health physics, a strong interest and aptitude for learning, and a can-do attitude with an excellent work ethic. The successful candidate should possess strong leadership, communication, and management skills. This position will best suit someone with excellent interpersonal skills, outstanding written and verbal communication skills, the ability to work independently and as part of a project team, and strong technical proficiency. The ability to exercise high responsibility and autonomy (once trained) is integral to this position. This position may require some travel, typically 5 days per month, depending on the number and location of particular consulting jobs. Primary Responsibilities:

• Answer radiation safety and health physics questions from client personnel.
• Assist client personnel with radiation safety-related compliance activities.
• Perform nuclear medicine, diagnostic radiology, and industrial and academic radiation safety audits.
• Perform radioactive materials (RAM) licensing activities on behalf of clients, including license applications, renewals, potential enforcement activity, consulting activity, and response.
• Perform dosimetry review, worker and patient dose estimates, and fetal dose estimates.
• Perform source inventory, leak-testing, and other radiological assay and analysis operations.
• Conduct dose investigations and ALARA reviews.
• Perform shielding designs and conduct shielding verification testing.
• Assist health physicists and senior health physicists with more complex consulting duties.
• Assist medical physicists and senior medical physicists with periodic diagnostic radiology equipment testing.
• Data review for CT, PET, fetal dose, etc.

Prerequisites:

• Bachelor's (B.S.) or Master's (M.S.) degree in Health Physics or a physics-related discipline. (Medical Physics, Nuclear Engineering, etc.)
• Mid-career health physicists will be considered with (5+) years of professional full-time experience in a health physics role that includes medical and applied health physics applications, and other areas such as research, academia, or industrial applications. (strongly preferred)
• RSO-eligible: must demonstrate current or prior authorization under 10CFR 35.100, 35.200, 35.300, and 35.400 (or equivalent Agreement State categories) or be eligible for a preceptor attested training to obtain these authorizations. Additionally, eligibility for 35.500, 35.600 (remote afterloader), 35.600 (gamma stereotactic radiosurgery), and 35.1000 is a plus.
• Particle Accelerator RSO (preferred): must show evidence of experience auditing and maintaining a radiation safety program for a particle accelerator.
• Familiarity and proficiency with basic health physics activities (e.g., survey instrument used, survey technique, leak testing, dosimetry review, etc.) and a willingness and aptitude to master more advanced health physics skills and activities.
• The ability to understand and apply regulations from various State and Federal entities to different client situations and write effective policy and procedures, Radiation Safety Manuals, and user-friendly forms.
• Solid foundation in radiation physics, radiation biology, electronics, and other areas relevant to equipment quality assurance testing. Preferred not required
• Effective written and oral communication skills, including professional, courteous, and convincing or persuasive in discussions with clients, regulators, and colleagues.
• Strong technical proficiency, the ability to manage multiple complex assignments concurrently and to completion, strong attention to detail, and the ability to deliver exceptional client service.
• Excellent time management and organizational skills.
• A working knowledge of MS Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint) and excellent general computer skills. Familiarity with Apple computers (i.e., macOS) and applications is a plus.
• Candidate must be willing and open to be trained on new opportunities and activities to enhance their technical skill set.
• Applicant must have a valid U.S. Driver's License.
• Applicant must be authorized to work in the U.S.
