The Medical Director provides clinical oversight and physician and advanced practice provider leadership for outpatient ambulatory clinics. This position combines direct patient care with administrative and operational responsibilities related to clinical quality, regulatory compliance, provider engagement, and performance outcomes. The role collaborates with UPG and UVAH leadership to align clinical practice with organizational goals and standards. Reports to the Chief Operating Officer.
PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES :
Essential Functions of the Job: The Medical Director provides clinical oversight and leadership for physicians and advanced practice providers. The role ensures consistent standards of care, regulatory compliance, and alignment with UPG and UVA Health clinical protocols and quality expectations.
The position supports provider performance and engagement through clinical guidance, mentorship, and participation in onboarding and professional development. The Medical Director partners with operational and administrative leaders to support clinical workflows, access, quality improvement, and population health initiatives within an ambulatory care environment.
The role serves as a clinical liaison to UPG and UVA Health leadership, contributing clinical input to performance monitoring, operational decisions, and strategic initiatives to improve patient outcomes and provider experience.
Clinical
Provide clinical leadership and direction to ensure consistent standards of care.
Clinical responsibilities and patient panel composition will align with the incumbent’s clinical discipline, credentialing, and scope of practice.
Support and mentor providers and assist with onboarding and clinical education.
Serve as a resource for clinical protocols, documentation standards, and clinical workflows.
Maintain a panel of patients and fulfill clinical duties as scheduled.
Function as an EMR resource and superuser.
Administrative and Operational
Participate in planning and implementation of operational initiatives.
Ensure adherence to organizational policies, clinic regulations, and medical staff bylaws.
Participate in provider recruitment, selection, and retention efforts.
Assist with addressing provider performance concerns and supporting resolution processes.
Collaborate with UPG and UVA Health leaders on strategic priorities, service line development, and program advancement.
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS (Knowledge, Skills & Abilities) :
Education:
Graduate of an accredited medical school with a degree of Doctor of Medicine or Doctor of Osteopathy and completion of an accredited residency in the applicable specialty.
Certification and Licensure
Physician candidates must maintain current board certification or board eligibility in the applicable specialty in accordance with medical staff bylaws.
Eligible for and able to obtain unrestricted licensure in the Commonwealth of Virginia appropriate to discipline.
Eligible for and able to obtain required appointment, credentialing, and clinical privileges, as applicable to discipline and privileging model, in accordance with UVA Health and UPG credentialing requirements.
Must maintain a current, unrestricted DEA registration as applicable to role and prescribing authority.
Must demonstrate and maintain all credentialing, licensure, and certification requirements of UVA Health System, the Virginia Board of Medicine or Virginia Board of Nursing, and applicable certifying bodies.
Physician Track
Five or more years of post residency clinical practice experience, including
Progressive clinical leadership with administrative or operational oversight
Ambulatory care delivery experience, including exposure to clinic operations and care team workflows
Demonstrated use of clinical, operational, or performance data to inform quality improvement initiatives and strategic decision making
Experience collaborating with leaders and stakeholders within a large academic health system or integrated healthcare organization preferred
Knowledge and skills:
Knowledge of evidence based clinical practice standards and quality improvement methodologies applicable to ambulatory settings.
Knowledge of regulatory, compliance, and accreditation requirements, including clinic regulations and medical staff bylaws.
Ability to apply sound clinical judgment and integrate evidence based guidelines into daily practice and clinical oversight.
Strong communication and interpersonal skills with the ability to build trust, influence outcomes, and collaborate effectively with providers, staff, and executive leadership.
