Pinterest helps more than 450 million people discover new ideas to help design their life. Our users come to Pinterest to explore ideas and run more than 6 billion search queries every month. Many of these queries represent exploratory search intent and are broad, which means that the search system should be able to deeply understand this intent, and then help people explore content, personalize results, harness visual signals effectively, and show the most engaging content up front. In addition, the team also owns query refinements and modules that help Pinners narrow their search intent from broad exploratory queries, to help them narrow their results down. All of this means that Pinterest search presents a unique challenge quite unlike other search systems and the opportunity to innovate on a product that only Pinterest can build.

We are looking for an exceptional technical leader and engineering manager to help lead the search backend team that spans across Palo Alto and Seattle.

What you will do:

  • The candidate will be responsible for major areas of the search engine for more than 450 million monthly active Pinterest users, including indexing and document ranking, query and content understanding, personalization, ML based retrieval, shopping, videos, as well as infrastructure efficiency and scalability. In addition, the candidate will work on innovative applications of NLP and Vision Models, and other techniques to drive query recommendations, multimodal search, agentic search, multimodal query understanding, and query based module generation and ranking.
  • Work closely with the other engineering teams in Pinterest to bring superior search experience to our users, such as Search Product, Infrastructure, research and content signals.
  • Deeply understand the Pinterest search product, and drive the vision for the team.
  • Provide visibility for senior leadership into the team's global impact.
  • Partner with stakeholders to expand impact across the company, including product management, data scientists and design.

  • Applied machine learning experience is strongly preferred. Experience in related fields such as recommendation systems, natural language processing and computer vision is a bonus.
  • Ability to drive the roadmap and directions of scalable production quality systems end-to-end.
  • A knack for product and impact on users of a consumer product.
  • 3+ years of experience in leading/managing a highly impactful ML-based engineering team of 5+ size; 7+ years of software development experience.

The Privacy & Conversion Data team is responsible for how the company safely and compliantly uses conversion data to power monetization. We build and operate the core privacy infrastructure behind ads reporting and optimization, including controlled data environments, finegrained access controls, centralized privacy rules enforcement, and deidentification pipelines for conversion data. Our mission is to make conversion data privacypreserving by default-centralized, deidentified, auditable, and easy for teams to use, while maintaining high utility for advertisers and staying ahead of an evolving global regulatory landscape.

Role Summary

We're seeking a Staff Engineer to lead the architecture and technical direction for the conversion data privacy platform, spanning both core Conversion Data systems and deidentification for ads reporting. You'll own the endtoend design and evolution of privacycritical pipelines and services, partner closely with Product, Data Science, Legal, and infrastructure teams, and set the technical bar for how we use conversion data safely at scale.

What you'll do:

  • Lead the technical strategy and architecture for conversion data privacy across access controls, deidentification, deletion, and privacy rules enforcement, driving toward a centralized, deidentifiedbydefault, automated privacy platform for monetization.
  • Design and evolve core privacy infrastructure including controlled environments for sensitive data, finegrained authorization and policy enforcement, and a central policy repository that consistently governs access across major data platforms and query engines.
  • Own deidentification pipelines for ads reporting endtoend-from separating sensitive and nonsensitive data, applying deidentification techniques and transformations, and generating privacypreserving datasets, to validating data utility and feeding reporting and analytics surfaces.
  • Build and improve privacy frameworks and tooling (for both online and offline workflows) that make safe, compliant conversion data usage simple and selfservice for downstream teams, reducing onboarding friction for new datasets, restrictions, and use cases.
  • Drive operational excellence and compliance by defining SLAs, building robust monitoring and alerting (e.g., deidentification quality, optout metrics, data leakages), leading incident response, and developing performant deletion and leakagehandling workflows that meet regulatory and audit requirements.
  • Partner crossfunctionally with ads, data, product, legal, and infrastructure stakeholders to translate legal/privacy requirements into technical designs, make clear tradeoffs between privacy and utility, and drive alignment on roadmaps, launches, and policy changes that impact advertisers and users.
  • Mentor and uplevel engineers across multiple teams, lead critical design and code reviews in privacysensitive areas, and establish best practices and documentation for privacybydesign, deidentification, and largescale data systems.

What we're looking for:

  • BS+ in Computer Science (or related field) or equivalent practical experience.
  • 8+ years of professional software engineering experience, with a focus on largescale data systems or distributed systems.
  • Strong proficiency building and operating data pipelines and services using Java/Scala/Kotlin or Python, plus SQL; experience with modern big data ecosystems is a plus.
  • Experience designing secure, reliable systems and APIs, with solid grounding in data modeling, access control, and performance optimization.
  • Meaningful experience in at least one of: privacypreserving data systems (e.g., deidentification, kanonymity), ads measurement/attribution, or largescale analytics/experimentation platforms.
  • Proven ability to drive crossteam technical initiatives from design through rollout, working closely with product, data science, and nonengineering partners (e.g., Legal, Compliance).
  • Strong communication and leadership skills, with a track record of mentoring engineers, raising engineering standards, and making sound decisions in ambiguous, highimpact problem spaces.

The Content Understanding team builds machine learning models that "read" Pinterest content-images, text, and video-to produce high-quality semantic signals (e.g., embeddings, localization, quality/safety labels). These signals power relevance and retrieval for Homefeed, Search, Related Pins, and Ads, and also support integrity use cases like spam and low-quality detection. We work end-to-end: from data and labeling strategy, to model training and evaluation, to low-latency serving and monitoring at Pinterest scale. The role is ideal for a senior modeler who also enjoys developing, productionizing models and leading technical direction across teams.

What you'll do:

  • Lead modeling strategy for content understanding (vision, NLP, multimodal), including architecture selection, training approach, and evaluation methodology.
  • Design and ship production models that generate content signals such as embeddings and classifications used across multiple product surfaces.
  • Own the full ML lifecycle: data/labeling strategy (human labels + weak supervision), training pipelines, offline evaluation, online experimentation, deployment, and monitoring/retraining.
  • Partner with infra/platform teams to ensure scalable, reliable training/serving (latency, cost, observability, rollout safety).
  • Collaborate with signal-consuming teams (ranking, retrieval, integrity, ads) to define signal contracts, adoption patterns, and success metrics.
  • Provide technical leadership through design reviews, mentoring, and raising the quality bar for modeling and ML engineering practices.

What we're looking for:

  • M.S/ PhD degree in Computer Science, Statistics or related field.
  • Significant industry experience building software and ML pipelines/systems, including technical leadership (project/tech lead or equivalent).
  • Strong proficiency in Python and at least one ML stack such as PyTorch / TensorFlow, plus solid software engineering fundamentals.
  • Proven experience training and deploying ML models to production, including model versioning, rollouts, monitoring, and retraining strategies.
  • Deep hands-on experience in content understanding domains, such as:

    • computer vision (classification, detection, representation learning),
    • NLP (text classification, entity/topic modeling),
    • multimodal / embedding models (e.g., transformer-based representations).

  • Experience working with large-scale datasets and distributed compute (e.g., Spark-like ecosystems, distributed training, GPU environments).
  • Strong applied skills in evaluation and experimentation: defining metrics, offline/online alignment, A/B testing, debugging regressions, and model quality analysis.
  • Demonstrated ability to influence across teams and drive ambiguous problem areas to measurable outcomes.

Relocation Statement:

  • This position is not eligible for relocation assistance. Visit our PinFlex page to learn more about our working model.

In-Office Requirement Statement:

  • We let the type of work you do guide the collaboration style. That means we're not always working in an office, but we continue to gather for key moments of collaboration and connection.
  • This role will need to be in the office for in-person collaboration 1-2 times/quarter and therefore can be situated anywhere in the country.

Role Summary

We're seeking a Staff Engineer to lead the architecture and technical direction of the measurement platform behind how advertisers understand the impact of their investment on Pinterest. You'll drive endtoend platform evolution (pipelines, services, correctness, reliability), partner closely with Product and Data Science, and raise the bar on rigor, trust, and operational excellence in ads measurement.

What you'll do:

  • Own endtoend architecture and delivery of features for lift measurement products, from design and implementation through rollout and ongoing reliability.
  • Design, build, and optimize largescale data pipelines that power study setup, experiment execution, and results computation.
  • Drive AI enablement across the team by building the supporting tooling and processes (CI checks, test strategy, templates), coaching engineers, and ensuring adoption results in sustained improvements to delivery speed and system quality.

  • Build "rigor by default" mechanisms: automated data validation, randomization/holdout integrity checks, imbalance diagnostics, and continuous verification/backtesting.
  • Raise the bar on data quality and trust: define SLAs, build monitoring and anomaly detection, and lead rootcause analysis for pipeline and study issues.
  • Mentor and up level engineers, driving strong technical execution and crossfunctional collaboration.

What we're looking for:

  • BS+ in Computer Science (or related field) or equivalent practical experience.
  • 8+ years of professional software engineering experience, with a focus on dataintensive systems.
