*Distinguishing Features:* The work involves responsibility for the performance of a wide variety of complex professional engineering duties of considerable magnitude and importance in the Department of Public Works. The work is carried out in accordance with standard, well established and accepted professional engineering methods, techniques, and procedures and involves the primary oversight and personal performance of design, inspection, and certification activities for County bridge construction and reconstruction projects. Acting as an engineering consultant to the Commissioner of Public Works, the incumbent may be consulted on any matter requiring professional engineering expertise, including County road and building projects. Supervision will be exercised over engineering staff and oversight of the field work to ensure that designs are followed and specifications are adhered to. Work is performed under the general direction of the Commissioner of Public Works, with wide leeway allowed the incumbent for the exercise of independent judgment in carrying out assignments and activities, because of the specialized, technical, and professional-level nature of the work performed. Duties are usually performed in close conjunction with supervisors of the various divisions of the Department of Public Works, with the Professional Engineer giving advice as needed, monitoring results, and performing inspections. Day-to-day supervision of project crews is usually not a feature of this class. Does related work as required.

*MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS* Graduation from a regionally accredited or New York State registered college or university with a Bachelor’s Degree in Civil Engineering and four years of full time paid experience in the field of civil engineering, two years of which must have involved bridge design/construction/maintenance activities.

*SPECIAL REQUIREMENT(S) *Possession of a currently valid license to practice as a Professional Engineer in New York State is required for appointment and as a condition of continued employment.

Job Title : Nuclear Engineer (Naval Reactors Engineer) Category / Component : Officer • Active Overview Design, regulate, and oversee the Navy's nuclear propulsion program, including reactor design, fleet operations, and eventual defueling and decommissioning of nuclear powered ships and submarines from Naval Reactors Headquarters and associated Department of Energy laboratories and shipyards.

Key Responsibilities Provide technical direction in areas such as reactor and fluid systems design, reactor physics, materials development, component design for steam generators, pumps, and valves, instrumentation and control for reactor and propulsion plants, testing and quality control, radiation shielding, and chemistry and radiological controls; review designs and analyses from laboratories, shipyards, and industry partners; coordinate with fleet units to ensure safe and reliable nuclear plant operation.

What to Expect Assume significant technical responsibility early in your career as part of a lean headquarters staff; work primarily in an analytical and oversight role rather than operating plants at sea; balance long term engineering projects with time sensitive fleet and shipyard issues; frequent coordination with senior civilian engineers, naval officers, and technical teams; high expectations for attention to detail, judgment, and written and oral communication.
