Stolk Labs, Inc. is a family-owned metallurgical and materials testing laboratory serving a wide range of industries. We are seeking a skilled Machinist with a mechanical engineering background who is looking for a long-term opportunity in a growing, small, family-owned lab environment.
This role is ideal for someone who enjoys hands-on machining work while also being open to cross-training in other technical departments within the lab.
Position Overview
The Machinist will be responsible for precision machining of test specimens and custom fixtures used in materials testing. In addition to machining responsibilities, this individual will be cross-trained in other departments (such as tensile testing, hardness testing, or sample preparation) to support overall lab operations.
We are looking for someone who understands both the mechanical principles behind machining and the importance of accuracy, documentation, and quality in a testing environment.
Primary Responsibilities
- Machine tensile specimens and other test samples to ASTM specifications
- Operate manual mills, lathes, saws, and related shop equipment
- Read and interpret engineering drawings and technical specifications
- Maintain dimensional accuracy and tight tolerance
- Assist with custom fixturing and tooling design
- Perform routine maintenance on machining equipment
- Maintain a clean, organized, and safe shop area
- Document work clearly and accurately for job tracking and quality records
Cross-Training Opportunities

What You Will Do:
- Provide engineering support for the fabrication and metrology of high-precision optical windows, lenses and prisms.
- Develop and document robust manufacturing process plans that meet complex optical and mechanical specifications, while optimizing for cost, throughput, quality, and yield.
- Interpret and verify conformance of engineering drawings, specifications, work instructions, and test procedures to applicable internal and external standards.
- Support bid and proposal efforts by estimating time and resources required for manufacturing activities.
- Drive continuous improvement initiatives through data analysis and process optimization.
- Collaborate closely with manufacturing technicians on the factory floor to resolve production issues in real time.
- Specify, procure, and validate production and metrology equipment required for optical manufacturing and testing.
- Lead root cause analysis and corrective action (RCCA) efforts for product or process failures using structured problem-solving tools such as 5 Whys and Fishbone.
- Interface with cross-functional teams, program management, and customers to provide technical guidance, ensure requirements compliance, and support key project milestones.

Qualifications You Must Have:
- Bachelor’s degree in Science, Technology, Engineering, or Mathematics (STEM) or equivalent, with a minimum of 2 years of relevant engineering experience.
- Relevant experience is providing engineering support in a precision optics manufacturing environment.
- Work history in optical manufacturing processes, including grinding, pitch polishing, and/or pad polishing techniques.
- Hands-on experience operating planetary and spindle polishing machines for optical fabrication.
- Proficiency in measuring and evaluating optical components using optical interferometry.
Qualifications We Prefer:
- Advanced degree (MS/PhD) in Mechanical Engineering, Precision Engineering, or a related field.
- Reading and interpreting engineering drawings that utilize GD&T standards and translating them into appropriate manufacturing steps.
- Hands-on expertise in operating and programming 3-axis and/or 5-axis CNC equipment using CAM software MasterCAM or comparable platforms.
- Setting up machines, executing initial runs, troubleshooting issues, and conducting post-machining inspections.
- Creating and evaluating CAD models using Creo, SolidWorks, or similar CAD software.
- Conducting root cause analysis and implementing effective corrective actions.
- Developing clear and detailed technical documentation to support manufacturing operations.
- Adapting work hours as needed to meet business and production demands.

Key Responsibilities
- Project Sovereignty: Independently lead and deliver new, complex workstreams from inception to launch, acting as a technical peer to existing leadership (e.g., Sai).
- System Architecture: Design and defend distributed microservices and event-driven architectures. You must be able to clearly whiteboard and communicate design patterns to both technical and non-technical audiences.
- Hands-on Execution: Maintain high-velocity output of clean, production-grade code using FastAPI (Python) and React (TypeScript).
- Platform Reliability: Architect and implement global Error Handling frameworks, centralized Logging (e.g., OpenTelemetry, ELK), and API Management strategies including Rate Limiting and versioning.
- Event-Driven Messaging: Oversee the implementation of asynchronous service communication using ActiveMQ or AWS EventBridge.
- AI-Augmented SDLC: Deeply integrate AI coding tools (e.g., CloudCode, Cursor, GitHub Copilot) into daily workflows to accelerate prototyping, refactoring, and automated testing.
- Engineering Mentorship: Foster a culture of excellence through rigorous code reviews and by unblocking senior engineers on complex technical hurdles.
- Product Collaboration: Work closely with Product Managers to turn high-level roadmaps into technical reality, providing accurate estimates and identifying technical risks early.
Required Skills & Qualifications
- Experience:13+ years of professional software development with a proven track record of leading large-scale products.
- Tech Stack Mastery: Expert-level FastAPI (Async Python) and modern React (Hooks, TypeScript, Performance Profiling).
- Advanced Governance: Hands-on experience with API Gateway patterns, request throttling, and securing distributed systems (OAuth2/JWT).
- Observability & Messaging: Deep knowledge of structured logging, distributed tracing, and message brokers (ActiveMQ or EventBridge).
- AI Tooling: Advanced proficiency in using AI tools for Fast Development to reduce manual overhead and multiply team output.
- Database & Infrastructure: Expert-level PostgreSQL (tuning/indexing), Redis (for caching/rate-limiting), and container orchestration (Kubernetes/Docker).
- Communication: Exceptional ability to translate technical "scars" and architectural risks into clear business impact.
